Arroyo to Detriot

Postby Amphatoast on Sat Jan 22, 2005 4:41 am

The Detroit Pistons acquired point guard Carlos Arroyo from Utah on Friday in a trade that sent center Elden Campbell and a first-round pick after 2006 to the Jazz.

Six-foot-2 Arroyo will provide depth behind Chauncey Billups and will allow Lindsey Hunter -- in his 12th NBA season -- to play fewer minutes. Arroyo started 71 games and averaged 12.6 points and 5.0 assists last season for the Jazz, but his role diminished this season despite his signing a new contract on July 14. He started 16 of 30 games and averaged 8.2 points and 5.1 rebounds.

"We're excited to add him to our team, because we think Carlos adds great flexibility to our backcourt," said Joe Dumars, Detroit's president of basketball operations.

Though Arroyo has three years and about $12 million left on his contract after this season, Dumars said his deal will not be a factor in the Pistons' hopes of re-signing Ben Wallace and Tayshaun Prince in the future.

Campbell, 36, helped the Pistons win the NBA title over the Los Angeles Lakers last season by slowing down Shaquille O'Neal. But he played in just 21 games this season because of Detroit's three-player frontcourt rotation of Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess.

By acquiring Campbell, the Jazz will clear salary-cap space this summer. He signed a two-year, $8.4 million contract with the Pistons before the 2003-04 season.

The 7-footer has averaged 10.5 points and 5.9 rebounds in his career, which started with the Lakers in 1990.

Arroyo, who was not drafted, began his career in Toronto and Denver during the 2001-02 season. The Puerto Rico native's career averages are 7.6 points and 3.5 assists.

well, he got his demands done. Let's see if he can fit into the world champs lineup and be more productive than he was with Utah.

He wanted to be a starter, I think he'll still be unhappy.

Should help Darko a little too, with no Campbell and Coleman getting waived.

Actually the Jazz are supposed to waive Campbell, and the Pistons will sign him back, so not really.

I don't know if Arroyo would fit in Larry Brown's system either, his defense isn't good, and Lindsey Hunter can bring them defense and outside shooting while controlling the offense well. Arroyo could be the 3rd PG on this team still, at least it's an upgrade from 4th

it's dissappointing for the Jazz as I really liked Arroyo and what he did last year and at the Olympics....I see Arroyo as a nice 6th man off the bench....hopefully at times Larry Brown will switch Billups to SG and Hamilton to SF and run with Arroyo at PG against smaller lineups....

Does somebody have the same opinion as I do? Tha Jazz have too many big men. Why do they need Campbell?

That won't really happen, will it? There is some purpose behind this trade.

Probably, the only purpose of the Jazz in this trade was getting ride of Arroyo

It most likely will happen, for salary purposes he would've been thrown in.

Jazz will most likely waive Campbell...this wasnt them going after him, they just wanted Arroyo dumped....look for Pistons to retrieve him just like they did with Hunter last season
