Well as we all know , not all the GM's in the league are good , i made this thread to discuss who are the best GM's and the worst GM's of today . I have to mention Danny Ainge , this guy has no clue what he's doing . Anyone else want to add in?
Sun Jan 16, 2005 7:03 am
Best GM: Joe Dumars (He built them from the Grant Hill and no one else show Show to Champs)

Read my post in the Danny Ainge topic. He's done an excellent job this year.

He acquired a Celtics team that could lose in the 1st round or 2nd round. Now they're struggling just to get the 8th seed.

I also nominate Danny Dumbass Ainge.

Best GMs are J.Dumars and Paxson(from Chi-Town)

Something had to be done. The core of the Celtics, minus Pierce, was sinking. Had they stuck with the same team, they would've done worse.
Celtics fans were sick of Walker and his 38% FG percentage. As was Celtics management. So they unloaded him for Raef Lafrentz, who unfortunately injured himself early in the season. The Celts, despite a sub-.500 average and despite the fact that they were in a rebuilding year, still made the playoffs.
Boston had one of the best offseasons going into this year. They picked up a franchise player, a point guard for the future, and a steal in Tony Allen all in one draft. Add in the pickup of Gary Payton for three sub-role players, and you can't do any wrong.
Forget the record they have now, because if you look at the talent they occupy right now, you know they're worthy of a playoff spot. This team just needs time to gel on the defensive end, and it will be fine.

Cavs GM (is it Jim Paxson??? not sure) did pretty well this off-season to recover from Boozer-gate.....
he got Gooden AND Varaejo essentially for Battie....Gooden for Battie on it's own would have been a steal IMHO, but to throw-in Varaejo who was obviously going to turn into something decent....he also signed Lucious Harris....shame his recent draft picks (Diop and Wagner) have been garbage (outside of James and I still have faith in Luke Jackson) and that prevents him from being a good GM....
bad GM's.......Danny Ainge......Michael Jordan.....Isiah Thomas.....Orlando GM (Weisbrod???) did well trading T-Mac, then stuffed up by trading Gooden and Varaejo for Battie.....jury's still out on Mobley-Christie trade......
Sun Jan 16, 2005 2:37 pm
Orlando GM (Weisbrod???) did well trading T-Mac, then stuffed up by trading Gooden and Varaejo for Battie
wasnt that to clear room for Howard?

I honestly can't remember....
if it was then I guess the deal is not as bad as it seems on paper....although surely they could have given someone other than Varaejo in the deal....or got a 1st Rounder (I can't remember if they got 1 or 2 2nd Rders) out of it as Cavs were desperate for a PF to replace Boozer....
ahh well, at least he's not as bad as Ainge, Thomas or MJ
Sun Jan 16, 2005 6:09 pm
Joe Dumars is obviously amongst the best (the only thing he did wrong was draft darko, but he more than made up for it by getting sheed for next to nothing). The worst has to be mitch Kupcheck(sic) for trading shaq for only odom and butler...
Sun Jan 16, 2005 11:20 pm
the only thing he did wrong was draft darko
jury is still out on that one, same could have been said for drafting Chandler or Curry but both are slowly turning it around...this one will take more time to decide
Dumars worst move was drafting Mateen Cleaves, but he then traded him for Jon Barry

before quickly annointing certain gm's the best and worst i think there's a few things you need to consider other then a team success to assess a gm:
tv ratings, attendance, market, duration of the gm
dumars didn't turn into a genius just in one year. i'm sure matt can tell you that
calling GM's like Ainge is ignorant at this point. same with calling jim paxson one of the best as well. the cavs luck out with lebron coming out the year they have the 1st. other then that, what good has he done? look at his othermoves: drafting diop, mihm, losing harpring, etc. the gooden move is hindsight 20/20 as gooden's value was very low at the time of the trade. gooden was a punk, ballhog, and crap defender. fortunate for the cavs, he's working out now.
the jury is out on ainge but as in glove's other post, he's made some solid moves. sure they were a borderline playoff team when he arrived, but they more then likely would have stayed that way for a quite a while if they resigned walker to a max deal.
they'd almost like be the GSW- doling out $100 million to players this offseason and still have a mediocre record
or what about zeke, who receives his fair shair of criticsim. i think other then houston, sweetney, and thomas, everyone has been traded since he's taken over. the payroll is yankee-like and they're still a borderline playoff team. is he a bad GM? not when you consider that the city/market that the knicks play in. would ny fans be patient if zeke blew things up to rebuild? a resounding hell no. since zeke's reign, tv ratings and attendance are up and the team is competitive.
funny how john paxson has been trashed here, specifically his rose/marshall trade to toronto and crawford to nyk deal. yesterday pax is a fool but look at chicago now
Mon Jan 17, 2005 4:10 am
whoever keeps the Spurs goin is a genius too!!!!
Mon Jan 17, 2005 5:34 am
isn't popvich the gm and coach there?
Mon Jan 17, 2005 5:40 am
Donnie Walsh put together a great Indiana team

You have to remember who's signing Zeke's checks - Jim Dolan and Cablevision. He's one of the worst owners in sports. And Zeke's dealing with the mistakes of the past, like our salary cap hell.
Believe me when I tell you the Knicks have never had smart ownership, and this goes back to the mid-to-late seventies. It's never about rebuilding in NY. It's always sign aging veterans, sneak into the playoffs, win a few games, fill the Garden, and jack up prices next season.

yep, they can really fight...i know they wish that this was a boxing league
joke
well i would say the spurs have a pretty good gm because they are an underrated team, yet they still have a great group of players.

I won't argue the point about ownership for the most part, but during the 90s I'd say that the Knicks coached by Pat Riley were a team built to win a championship.
Mon Jan 17, 2005 10:53 am
yeah they were competitors every year...they reached to the finals twice in the 90s. That's pretty good since the 90s were the years the bulls had 6 of them.
Mon Jan 17, 2005 11:55 am
I was about to post here and say that the Spurs had the best GM before Matt... but i figured i was being bias. RC Buford is the Spurs GM... but Popavich has a say in a lot of the decisions. Buford/Popavich are a master at drafting international/euro players and picking out the ones that are overlooked but have phenomenal skills at their positions. Also, they put together a well organized team that has great locker room type players. I think that the Spurs will most likely never have to be in the lottery as long as Buford/Pobavich are running things.
Mon Jan 17, 2005 12:36 pm
I actually thought Danny Ainge was doing a good job, a lot of people looking from the outside in would say he's horrible, but that team wasn't going anywhere, the purpose of building a team is to build a championship one, and they were a 2nd round and out team.
Right now with the young guys he's acquired, they're capable of going much farther in the future, and even able to make the playoffs this season.
Mon Jan 17, 2005 12:54 pm
one more thing about the Spurs, they've managed to stay consistent for years. Year in year out they are a legit championship contender. Portland was great in 2000 but after that they fell off, then Sacramento was great but since then it's championship window has gotten smaller all the while Spurs, after winning in 99 got better year to year and won again in 2003....now they are back and better than ever and will probably be better next year too.

Worst gm:
mitch kupchap.....
Tue Jan 25, 2005 2:06 am
i am suprised no one mentioned Jerry West
i wish the grizz could have hired him earlier so the team didn't have to uproot to the US
as for the worst, my nomination is Stu Jackson
