Bobcat’s Double-Double Duty

With 18 points and 11 rebounds at Washington on Dec. 27, the Bobcats' Emeka Okafor eclipsed Miami’s Shaquille O’Neal for the most consecutive double-doubles by an active player during his rookie season, surpassing O’Neal’s 15 in a row during the 1992-93 season for Orlando. Okafor’s 16 straight games with a double-double are six more than San Antonio’s Tim Duncan’s streak of 10 during the 1997-98 season.

Below is a list of active NBA players who recorded nine or more consecutive double-doubles in their rookie season. The last rookie to have more consecutive double-doubles than Okafor was 12-time NBA All-Star Elvin Hayes, who registered 60 straight from Oct. 30, 1968 to Feb. 22, 1969.

Very Impressive (Y)(Y)

I love his game, a true inside presence. Instead of the outside shooting bigmen we have seen in recent years. :(

I love the fact that I got him as a throw-in via a trade with Matthew in the NLSC Yahoo league (Y)

He's definitely been impressive, and I think with hindsight he's a better pick for Charlotte than Dwight Howard (who's also been impressive) would've been if they'd had the choice.

he's up to 19 straight after getting double-double against Heat....

good to see Okafor proving doubters wrong....I think I read at Hoopshype that they reckon he won't win Rookie of Year cos he's on a crappy team :x if this turns out true and some other clown wins, there this is outrageous....

He has to have a lot of responsibility for that team, especially in the rebounding category. They have no one to do it.

I don't think he'll be passed over simply because the Bobcats are near the bottom of the standings. Not all former Rookies of the Year have been on playoff teams in their first season: consider Allen Iverson, Vince Carter, Damon Stoudemire, Elton Brand/Steve Francis, Grant Hill/Jason Kidd...picking an MVP from a losing team would be an odd choice, but it shouldn't as much bearing on the ROY award.

He's certainly surprising in the points and rebounds category, but to be honest, I thought his area of excellence would be in the shot blocking category... that'll probably come in a couple years of experience I hope.

Yeah I have him in a fantasy league too... he's been amazing putting up points and rebounds but he puts up huge numbers in blocks too... but it's kinda hard to get into double digits in blocks, so that kinda gets looked over when you guys talk about his double-doubles

umm Bron won it last year...even tho Melo made it to the playoffs, so err Emeka should get it...cause I think the Bobcats can surely notch up at least 20-25 wins...because Dwight's doin good but its mostly Francis and Hill who r doing the work in Orlando.

Go Emeka, bring that old skool flavour back.

Indeed, I forgot to mention LeBron when listing the players who were ROY despite not making the playoffs.
