All Star update

Postby Matthew on Fri Dec 17, 2004 8:24 am

Right now, the lineups would be:
West:
Yao
Duncan
KG
Tmac
Kobe

And for the east:
Shaq
Grant Hill
Vince...
Iverson
Lebron

Assuming they stay in position, who will the reserves be?
I'll say..
West:
Dirk, Nash Allen, Amare, Brad Miller, Melo and maybe Manu

East:
Francis, Ben Wallace, Dwayne Wade, Jefferson, Rasheed, Stephon and Jamison (i wasnt sure if jermaine would be back. if he is, jamison or sheed will lose their spot probably)

no not bench but have you seen 5 players play like this on the 1 team before in recent years all putting up big numbers, i'm just saying this years all star is a hard 1 to decide on who should be on the teams since so many players are having break out seasons.

umm that'll be a weird starting lineup, course I expect Baron Davis to play big minutes for the West.

Grant Hill a starter, HELL NO...hes doin good but not a all-star starter good...

stupid voting system is flawed, Jamison deserves the starting PF role hes doin an amazing job.

Yao shouldnt be a starter, thats why I personally dont like the voting system at times...I mean just because hes a nice guy he gets vote and it has nothing to do with his game...Id rather start Stromile Swift at center than Yao (y)

ugh i cant believe vince carter is leading ALL east forwards..
to the guy that said grant hill isn't all star material, lets compare him to the leading vote getter for east forwards - vince carter.

stats breakdown:

grant hill - 21 games played: 20 points per game, 4.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists 1.2 steals per game

orlando's record: 13-9

vince carter - 20 games played: 16 points per game, 3.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.25 steals per game

toronto's record: 8-16

hmm not only is hill doing better in every statistical category except for steals, but his team is also winning. mind you, hill has played less than 50 games the last 3 seasons yet he's still able to pull off these numbers in a secondary role.

oops didnt See Vince there....well I dont think Carter deserves to be an all-star.....but Grant Hill doesnt deserve to be a starter even though hes a nice guy.

Hill should be on the bench for certain but not a starter...

Starting 5 for east
Shaq
Jamison
Lebron
Iverson
Wade

Starting 5 for west
TD
KG
Dirk
Kobe/Ray
Nash

That's some BS that Yao gets chosen to start every year and then you have Amare who is undersized and playing center and killin' people each game. Yao shouldn't even be on the all-star team IMO so why would he be a starter? I know it's mostly people from china voting for him anyway, but i hate when someone really deserves to start on the team don't start. I hope they change it to where some people in the league choose the all-stars from now on because having the same people every year when some of them don't even play like an all-star is crazy.

Thanks for backing me up there OSF :)

TD can play Center he just doesnt like to, Bron can play SG/PG/SF and even PF if he gives it a go..........if u watch b-ball u should know that...if TD played only PF he wouldnt be winning MVP titles would he..he plays Center aswell...plus Im sure Duncan at Center will be 5 times better than Yao at center.

When are people going to realise that players like Duncan just aren't all star material
Now I'm not going to argue that he's a good player, but I think an all star game should have a certain amount of show and creativity.
It isn't like a regular game, people expect nice dunks and stuff.
So give players like Amare a chance. I mean, he's tearing it up this season and he isn't boring to watch.
I'm also getting tired of seeing the same players year after year.
Why vote, you already know the teams in advance.
KG, Iverson, Duncan, ..... are chosen every single year.
IMO it would be a nice change to have other players in the all star game, because this is getting pretty boring.

As I said in the Grant Hill Comeback thread, I'd love to see him stay up there and get the starting nod, for some nostalgia and to show some appreciation for his efforts...and the doctors that have been working on his ankle year-in, year-out.

As far as Yao is concerned, these are the other choices:

M. Camby, Denver Nuggets
E. Dampier, Dallas Mavericks
V. Divac, Los Angeles Lakers
B. Grant, Los Angeles Lakers
C. Kaman, Los Angeles Clippers
J. Magloire, New Orleans Hornets
B. Miller, Sacramento Kings
D. Mutombo, Houston Rockets
R. Nesterovic, San Antonio Spurs
T. Ratliff, Portland Trail Blazers
L. Wright, Memphis Grizzlies

Do any of those guys really seem more worthy All-Star starters than Yao? If Shaq was still out West, I'd agree that in terms of production and "status", Yao should be coming off the bench. As it is, I think he's fine as the starter.

I see where you're coming from and I agree that the All-Star game should have that element of showmanship, but I disagree that Tim Duncan isn't All-Star material. Flashy dunks and highlight reel plays are a staple of All-Star games, yes, but so is the concept of showcasing the NBA's greatest players all playing together in one game. Regardless of where you rank Duncan among today's players (I would say he'd be top five for most people) there's no denying that he's pretty damn good - his career speaks for itself. The same goes for the other perennial All-Stars. As such, they belong in a game that is meant to show off the NBA's finest.

Besides, the fact that some folks are selected year after year by the fans suggests that a lot of people do find them entertaining to watch and want to make sure they're in the game...though I can't imagine the coaches not picking Duncan if he wasn't voted to the game by the fans.

I don't see why not :)

Melo just isn't consistantly getting it done.
Dirk should be there.
But if the suns and seattle are still doing well when voting for bench is done i don't see why not have 5 guys from the suns and ray + shard.

Its nice to see hill being a good chance to start in the all star game, he deserves it (Y) He's worked hard to get back to almost his best.

melo is alot more deserving of an all star birth than joe johnson or quentin richardson. when the bulls were 36-5 heading into the all star break in both 96 and 97, they only had mj and pip as all stars, i think it some ridiculous that people think that pheonix has five all stars on their squad. An argument can be made for marion, nash and amare, but thats it.
