Why do you like your favorite team?

Postby EGarrett on Mon Dec 13, 2004 3:59 am

Just curious. This topic might have been done before, but it'd be interesting to know how people came to like their teams.

My favorite teams, in order, are the Nets, Knicks and Cavaliers.

The Nets I like because I'm originally from New Jersey, and we don't have a lot of sports teams. Plenty of teams PLAY in New Jersey (the Giants for example), but few will claim it. So the Nets have a special place in our hearts.

I do have to say though, that if all the players leave and they move to Brooklyn, I wouldn't have much reason to like them anymore.

After that I like the Knicks, mainly because everyone in the North East gets the Knicks shoved down their throat 24-7. Before Kidd, you wouldn't even have known the Nets existed. So more local ties...

After the Knicks, I like the Cavaliers, although they're more tied as of late. Not because of Lebron, but because of Dajuan Wagner. Local ties, of course. He's from Camden. Lebron doesn't hurt, though  .

I first started watching NBA Games back in '94 when in greece the only way you could watch the NBA was to stay up until abt 4 in the morning and watch them live through an italian sattelite channel... hehe
One night while i was watching Chicago vs Washington i saw this HUUUGE guy riding all over Longley(yep, Gheorghe Muresan). The next year my Huge Hero won the MIP award, making me even more proud. I just loved their starting five: Muresan, (young)Chris Webber, (agile back then)Juwan Howard, Calbert Cheaney, and Rod Strickland, with Tracey Murray, Chris Whitney and a VERY young and unexperienced Rasheed Wallace coming off the bench. Since then i've been a Washington fan, every now and then i start up my Snes Emulator and run NBA Live 96 just to play with that great team. :)

Great topic. When I was a kid my uncle took me to see the Knicks vs. the Lakers at Madison Square Garden. I didn't know anything about basketball or sports at the time so I didn't even know who was who.

When I saw those purple and gold uniforms I liked them and assumed that they were the Knicks. By about the third quarter my uncle realized my misconception and told me that those weren't the Knicks, they were the Lakers.

The Lakers won with Magic sinking a jumper in crunch time to seal the deal, I've been a Magic Johnson and Laker fan ever since. The Lakers of today and that includes the Shaq and Kobe era are NOTHING compared to the Showtime team of yesteryear. I miss those days man, I really do...

My dad got me into the Timberwolves way way back when I was like 5 years old. My dad is a diehard Timberwolves fan, so naturally I have some influence to be the same. Watching KG ever since I was about 7 years old was amazing. I loved how he was just like a kid out there, he was just so fun to watch. My dad took me to my first game vs. Indiana in 1999 when Malik Sealy hit the game winning three...a couple of games later I got to meet Malik Sealy, Gary Trent and some other Timberwolves players.

I've just grown to love this team that has always been an underdog and always shows passion. It just draws me to them.

Honestly I was a bandwagon fan until I was 9 or so but then I started watching the Golden State Warriors and I got "hooked" to the team. They're my home team so I get to see nearly all their games and I tape all their games so it's one of those 'you go to see them for the first time and then fall in love with them' type issues.

LOL, I completely forgot bandwagon fans.

Let me see if I can add "They happen to be winning right now" as an option.

i actually think i'm going to go with bobcats. i was liking them before because they have a good mix of players, but now with bogans and rush (from my hometown), they really do have a pretty solid foundation.

in recent years it's been the raptors- that's kind of faded now with the decline of vince (and the team in general), and before that the jazz (karl, john, and jeff.....those were the days)

The Nets are my favorite team because of Jason Kidd, he is my favorite player so that's one reason. Also, before this season they may not have been the best but they played the right way, defense first, grab the rebound and get easy baskets.

And also two years ago I really started liking RJ, he's improving every year and he still has a long career ahead of him.

Some teams I like are the Mavericks and the Kings. I've been a Mavericks fan since I was little, I got a Nowitzki jersey when I was young and I liked him before I even knew who he was :D. They are a fun team to watch with all their offensive firepower, but recently I havn't liked some of the moves they made. I also really like Marquis Daniels and Josh Howard, they will be really good players.

I like the Kings because of how they play, great passing big men, and two great passing guards. A very athletic and physical Bobby Jackson coming off the bench.

I really like Brad Miller and the way they use him in the offense, he's very physical and can score from the inside and the outside.

This is the first year where I only have one favorite team. In the past it would be 1) Gary Payton's team and 2) the Boston Celtics -- my hometown team. Well now that two worlds have collided, and my favorite player plays for my hometown team, there's only 1) Boston Celtics.

its odd to see your last year favorite team was celtics and lakers.

well for me, i can say its a bandwagon thing. here in philippines in late 80's, NBA was not that popular mainly because we can't watch game in regular basis. if we can watch NBA, mostly itsthe finals and those time, its always celtics and lakers. those were the greatest battle of all time, bird, mahale, johnson(dennis) and parish vs. Kareem, Magic, Cooper and Worthy. so being young then, i saw those great passes of Magic and how Worthy finish the break. damn that was picture perfect for a kid like me. so from then i follow lakers everytime i can. and when Bryant came to Lakers that only add more love to the purple and glod team.

i liked the grizzlies when they were here in vancouver. i had the opportunity to watch mike bibby play and he's just awesome in person.. he might not seem fun to watch or athletic on tv, but the kid is smart as hell.. i saw the grizzlies play the blazers and they just barely beat them in overtime.. bibby scored 27 pts; i think that was a season high for him that year. i kinda stopped watching the grizz play when they moved to memphis however, but i've still been following bibby..i was proud as hell when he single-handedly almost beat the lakers in the 2002 WCF and finally got the recognition he deserved.

other than that, i dont really have a favourite team.. in the playoffs, i love rooting for the underdogs :D

I posted this somewhere else:

I've been a Lakers fan since I was 9, my dad got me a Cedric Ceballos jersey which at the time kicked ass. My claim to fame is that I never bought a Kobe or Shaq jersey, because they're too common... I wanna get a Sasha Vujacic one though, he doesn't get enough respect

The reason it was Cedric Ceballos is cause I thought the colours were cool. Picking your favourite team via jersey colours, hmm, how unacceptable.

Two reasons: my favourite players (MJ and Pip, obviously ;)) played for them. Additionally, the Bulls were the team that received the most exposure here in Australia once they ascended to the upper echelon of the league at the beginning of the 90s. While I take an interest in other teams and players, and I enjoy any NBA action, the Bulls still remain my favourite team...even if times aren't quite as good these days.

I bandwagoned the Bulls... at the wrong time. These days I like the torture! I started getting into basketball in around grade 5. I was barely in the country 2 years and everybody at school was talking about Michael Jordan. MJ apparently didn't miss and could do all sorts of miraculous things. The first game I saw was a replay of game 6 of the 93 finals and the Bulls winning. The only thing I can remember from that game was an MJ turnaround jumper on the right wing, which he banked in... so hopefully I'm talking about the right game if anybody wants to double check :P I thought MJ was great, and I liked the Bulls. I found MJ retired soon there after, but I continued the follow the Bulls through 93-94 and 94-95. When I heard on the news MJ was back, I was jumping around my living room pumping my fist. Back in those days it used to really affect me, I'd get really excited, and upset over basketball. Now I'm used to losing... just like the Bulls team  The only other team that manages to pull the heart strings is my countries national team for some reason, but I rarely get to see them. Bodiroga gave me goosebumps at the 02 world champs (y)

Spurs - Support them with my heart, lots of ppl say their boring and have never had any razzle dazzle players....but who cares they have the man himself, Tim Dammmmmnnnn Duncan !!!...first team I supported since getting into the NBA....all I knew was Jordan and the Bulls before but never liked them.

Knicks - I kinda have an on and off love for them, but I absolutely loved them when they had Ewing(my fav big man of all time next to TD). Their jerseys are my fav's....sadly never got a hold of a Knicks jersey  ...hopefully they can start winning and bringing in some titles.

Nuggets - Simply because my fav player Andre :( Miller is on their lineup...I bandwagon any team hes on although MC is one of my fav big men of all time(prolly like no.6) and I really like Melo however much I critize and get annoyed with his off court antics(kinda like a Rodman relationship some ppl have).

Los Angeles Lakers:

About a year before Magic made his comeback in the 1995 season, he has been in Poland for something which I dont remember anymore. But I saw him in person in the city of Warsaw where I was living back then, and since then they started airing alot of Laker games. So it was basicly the first team I ever saw playing and from that moment I became a fan I guess. Cedric Ceballos was my favorite player back then btw (Y)
