East Standings in total chaos, Heat miss out

In one of the tightest playoff races, the Eastern Conference was rattled throughout April as teams shuffled around the bottom half of the East playoff picture. In a crazy turn of events, the superstar duo of Dwyane Wade & Amare Stoudemire will miss this years playoffs, which can be heavily attributed to Amare's late season injury which kept him out of the lineup. The New York Knicks scraped in by the smallest of margins, setting up a huge test for the top placed Charlotte Bobcats in the first round.

The Los Angeles Lakers are back on top of the basketball world heading into this years playoffs, looking to avenge their Conference Finals exit from last year. While the East has a new face at the top of the standings, with the Charlotte Bobcats following on from their postseason debut last year to finish ahead of their much more experienced counterparts.

Magic third time lucky? Rockets won't repeat

Both Finals competitors had less than stellar seasons, with the Houston Rockets not even making the playoffs to defend their title, and casting huge doubts over the future of their star duo of Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. The Magic managed to string together a strong enough April to secure the 6th seed in the chaotic Eastern Conference, and on paper look set to surprise their division rival in Atlanta in a rematch of last years first round matchup.

Definitely not the strongest year in the East. The Bobcats on top...only in a video game, right?

Season Review – Lottery Teams

30. Detroit Pistons (25-57)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Rodney Stuckey (76)

The Pistons seem to be rough road to nowhere, but look to now be making the moves to get younger. Rodney Stuckey shined through in a contract year and should be rewarded accordingly, however Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva and Tayshaun Prince could all be wearing different jerseys next year as the Pistons rebuild.


29. Minnesota Timberwolves (30-52)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Aaron Brooks (80)

Another poor year for the Timberwolves, with a roster that on-paper looked stronger than their on court production. Star PG Aaron Brooks looks set to re-sign on a large extension, as well as Kevin Love heading into his last year of his rookie contract. Al Jefferson significantly regressed this season, which could lead to a change of plans which could see him dealt for more young talent.


28. Cleveland Cavaliers (31-51)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Tyrus Thomas (74), Delonte West (74), John Salmons (73), Shaquille O’Neal (72), Anthony Parker (71),

The Cavaliers are cleaning house, with one of the biggest one season turnovers you will see. Most free agents aren’t expected to return, unless on significantly lower wages, as the Cavs will most likely field one of the cheapest and youthful line-ups that will no doubt sit at #30 this time next year.


27. Washington Wizards (35-47)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: None

With injuries hampering their aging stars, it may be time to flip the switch and begin to build around #2 pick Evan Turner. Gilbert Arenas’ contract is almost unmovable after a disappointing year, leaving the Wizards hamstrung to move into a full rebuild.


26. Philadelphia 76ers (35-47)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Samuel Dalembert (72)

Suffering from a ruthless conference, the Sixers find themselves in a tough spot. Iguodala was solid again, and have the youthfulness of Jrue Holiday, Al-Farouq Aminu and Robin Lopez to see them through, however Elton Brand’s contract may hold them hostage in securing any top-tier free agents.


25. New Orleans Hornets (36-46)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Wilson Chandler (74)

A complete 180 from where the Hornets stood a year ago. No Chris Paul, no David West, but David Lee, a re-sign of Wilson Chandler and a slew of picks should still hold the Hornets in good stead.


24. Sacramento Kings (35-47)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: None

The city of Sacramento was hoping for more from their stalwart pairing of Tyreke Evans & Brandon Jennings. With Greg Monroe and another lottery selection on the way, the Kings are gearing up for an exciting and hopefully better 2011-12 season.


23. Toronto Raptors (35-47)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: None

Quite a disappointing year in what many considered their chance to shake up the Eastern Conference. Chris Bosh stayed at his best, however Caron Butler, Hedo Turkoglu and the late addition of Mo Williams wasn’t enough to capture a playoff spot. With a possible steal in the upcoming draft and the continued growth of Demar DeRozan, a much better result is expected next year.


22. Golden State Warriors (36-46)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Kelenna Azubuike

A mostly unchanged roster still hasn’t reaped the rewards the Warriors were hoping for. A major shake-up may have to be on the cards, with their dynamic duo of Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis needing better help than an aging Stephen Jackson and Corey Maggette.


21. Phoenix Suns (37-45)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Greg Oden (76), Jason Richardson (74)

The future looks very bright in Phoenix, highlighted by a stellar first season from Rookie of the Year winner John Wall. Pairing with their other pieces secured through the Nash/Amare exodus, The Suns are an exciting team that will only create more noise as their new star PG develops.


20. Milwaukee Bucks (37-45)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Michael Redd (73), Luc Richard Mbah a Moute (71)

Well on their way to a playoff spot before an injury to Andrew Bogut put a pin in their playoff plans, the Bucks still look dangerous. With Michael Redd coming off the books, the Bucks look set to be right in the hunt for a landmark free agent to pair with their exciting trio of Bogut, Bynum and Paul George.


19. Houston Rockets (38-44)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Carl Landry (75), Brad Miller (70)

Not where anyone would’ve expected the reigning champions, in a very disappointing championship defense. After the mid-season exit of Shane Battier, this team looks set to implode as GM Daryl Morey will look to shuffle around pieces.


18. Memphis Grizzlies (39-43)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Zach Randolph (79), Marc Gasol (77), Shane Battier (75), Mike Conley (73)

After an exciting playoff run last season, the Grizzlies just missed out this year. With a roster of youth and talent that rivals the Thunder, Memphis now has to manoeuvre a way to keep Gasol, Conley and Randolph on the books for the future. It’s likely that this will be the last season of veteran leader Allen Iverson, opening up even more scoring for their swingman O.J. Mayo.


17. Miami Heat (41-41)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Amare Stoudemire (88), Jermaine O’Neal (74),

With the East super team spotlight stolen by LeBron James & Chris Paul, the duo of Dwyane Wade and Amare Stoudemire could be already at its end, with the latter still not re-signed for next season. There’s no doubt the season ending injury to Mario Chalmers last playoffs put the Heat in a terrible position, but this offseason it is crucial to find a solid supporting cast to put around their stars-if Amare stays.

In arguably one of the toughest first round matchups, the #1 seeded Bobcats overcame the superstar duo of LeBron James & Chris Paul to advance to the Conference Semifinals, with Richard Hamilton again starring with 33 points.

16. Denver Nuggets (40-42)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Carmelo Anthony (92) (P), Nene (76) (P), Kenyon Martin (75), J.R. Smith (74), Arron Afflalo (71)


After only just missing the playoffs last year, the Nuggets made little gain on their efforts this year, starting slow but just making it for the 8th seed. A strong showing against the top seeded Lakers, however with their playoff campaign now over, all eyes are looking straight at Carmelo Anthony and his player option, as well as J.R. Smith’s likely extension. In the middle of a crossroads, Melo will need more than Nene & Kenyon Martin down low to see Denver as his forever home.

15. New York Knicks (40-42)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: None

After securing their golden goose and pairing him with a superstar sidekick, the New York Knicks certainly didn’t expect a below .500 season and a first round exit. The only solace Knicks fans can rest on is that their stars are all contracted, however LeBron James and Chris Paul must lift their game next year. There’s no more excuses, the city of New York expects greatness.


14. Orlando Magic (43-39)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Vince Carter (82) (T), Al Harrington (75), Matt Barnes (70)

With their strongest roster in the past three years, the Magic underperformed greatly. Major changes could be expected in Orlando, as Dwight Howard heads into his player option year. It could be time for Orlando to clear house and collect some valuable young pieces for their star Center and his running mates.


13. New Jersey Nets (44-38)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Andre Miller (76) (T), Chris Douglas-Roberts (71), Keyon Dooling (70), Yi Jianlian (70)

A solid season from the Nets as they added Carlos Boozer to their duo of stars in Brook Lopez & Devin Harris, but a less than ideal first round exit. Sixth Man of the Year honours should keep Andre Miller on roster, or could see him traded to a starting role if the right deal comes up. Young star Chris Douglas-Roberts could be in for a paycheck as the Nets “fourth horseman”.


12. San Antonio Spurs (44-38)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Richard Jefferson (75)

Another disappointing first round exit for the Spurs, but with their trio locked up for another two years, the only piece that could be out the door is Richard Jefferson. Not the desired result, but it would be a huge surprise to see any big move come out of San Antonio as they make their 14th straight postseason.


11. Boston Celtics (47-35)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Kendrick Perkins (74), Glen Davis (71)

A truly disappointing result for the Celtics, with so much promise mid-season at the top of the East, they were sent crashing back down to earth by a Pacers team not even at full strength. Much like the Spurs, it’s unlikely to see the Celtics make too many major changes heading into next season (besides the possible loss of Kendrick Perkins and Glen Davis), but could it be the last in the era of “The Big 3”?


10. Utah Jazz (48-34)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Andrei Kirilenko (75),

Certainly a better regular season than most predicted, bouncing back incredibly well from the loss of star forward Carlos Boozer. Deron Williams carried the load for the Jazz, but has to be frustrated with a second-straight first round exit, especially after a much more convincing season. Okur and Kirilenko are aging, and it may be time for Deron to get some new, fresh teammates.


9. Los Angeles Clippers (50-32)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: None

Another nightmare exit for the Clippers, bounced after a phenomenal regular season. Blake Griffin continues to build into a superstar, with Eric Gordon supporting as a deadly sharpshooter. With Baron aging at PG, warning flags may be starting to appear as the Clippers have to batten down the hatches to bounce back next year after another demoralising finish.[/center]

The Dallas Mavericks are heading back to the Conference Finals for the first time since 2006, with veteran guard Jason Terry hitting an almost impossible 3-pointer over MVP Kobe Bryant to vanquish the #1 seed.

The Thunder looked like the veterans in Portland, comprehensively making their case to be the top team in the West with a convincing performance.

Joe Johnson and the Hawks made sure their season didn't end in Indianapolis, putting themselves in their second straight seven game series.

I was hoping for a Bulls-Mavericks Finals in 2011. Looks like it could happen here.

8. Portland Trail Blazers (42-40)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Leandro Barbosa (75)(P)

An underwhelming year from the trio of Roy, Nash & Aldridge, with Barbosa shortlisted for Sixth Man of the Year and no All-NBA honours. With Nash now past his 37th birthday, the window for the Blazers is shrinking quickly. With Barbosa on a Player Option, they may need to source a new energy man off the bench.


7. Indiana Pacers (43-39)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: David West (77)(P), Troy Murphy (74)

An over-performance in this years Playoffs, soured heavily by the absence of big man Roy Hibbert. With Granger, West & Hibbert healthy, plus another great season from recruit Jordan Farmar, the Pacers should prove to still be quite a tough fixture next season.


6. Charlotte Bobcats (49-33)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Richard Hamilton (77), Tyson Chandler (72), Raja Bell (71), Jared Dudley (71)

A dream regular season, into an expected Playoff finish. No doubt their energy was dumped into beating a colossus of a #8 in a star-studded Knicks team, leaving them easy pickings for the Bulls in the Conference Semis. After an outstanding second half of the year, Hamilton should be sure to return, as well as big man Tyson Chandler, leaving them open to possibly building on this year’s above-expected performance.


5. Los Angeles Lakers (59-23)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Derek Fisher (72)

Similar to the Bobcats in handling a tough #8 seed, the Lakers seemed flat against an experienced Mavericks outfit. With Pau and Kobe out of contract, with the latter no doubt getting priority, will Pau stick around in LA, or pursue a championship somewhere else?

Hawks head to NBA Finals after win in Windy City


In their maiden Conference Finals, the Atlanta Hawks are officially NBA Finalists, now only 4 wins away from their first championship since 1958.

Damn. Well, at least the Bulls will definitely remain unbeaten in the NBA Finals.

In truly historic fashion, the Oklahoma City have made it all the way to the NBA Finals in their first ever playoff run as a franchise, with star Kevin Durant leading the charge for one of the youngest & inexperienced Finals squads ever assembled.

Season Review – Conference Finals Eliminations

4. Dallas Mavericks (43-39)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Josh Howard (72), Larry Hughes (71), Ben Wallace (71), J.J. Barea (70)

Was this the Mavericks year? Dirk, J-Kidd, Terry & Marion aren’t getting any younger. The key additions of Ben Wallace and Larry Hughes at the deadline were invaluable, however this team is in Championship mode, and fell short to a team only just beginning their ascent. The Mavericks can come back again, but may find themselves in a similar fate to the Lakers & Spurs with aging stars unable to keep up with the dynamic pace of the Thunder offence.


3. Chicago Bulls (46-36)
Notable upcoming Free Agents: Joakim Noah (77)

What a difference a year can make. The Bulls moved from cellar dweller to Eastern Conference contender, with a stellar post-All Star break into the playoffs. Many would consider this above and beyond what we came to expect for this team this season, and leaves the city of Chicago excited for next year’s showing.



Finals Preview: Atlanta Hawks vs Oklahoma City Thunder

The 2010-11 Finals see two teams making their NBA Finals debut, one looking to find the crowning achievement to years of consistent play, while another looks to build out a the beginning of a dynasty in its Playoff debut.

Veterans vs. up and comers


With such a young core, the Oklahoma City Thunder see themselves facing veterans at almost every position, mainly in the matchup at PG and primary scorer in Kevin Durant vs Joe Johnson. Though there's extremely limited Finals experience across both rosters (Marcus Camby - 1 Finals experience vs Mike James 2004 champion), the age difference is stark in their stars, with Mike Bibby's veteran leadership coming up against an explosive distributor in Russell Westbrook. The point guard battle will be interesting, with Bibby's measured, patient style being constrasted by the run-and-gun of Westbrook, providing each offense with a different flavour and way to pick each other apart. The Thunder seem to have the advantage over the Hawks in this department, as they've just faced a similar foe in the Dallas Mavericks.

When it comes to scoring, arguably no one did it better than Kevin Durant, leading the league in scoring at 30ppg, but will have a battle on his hands through veteran Mike Miller. The Hawks own scoring leader Joe Johnson looks to double down on his two strong scoring performances against James Harden and the Thunder this year, proving to be sore spot for the Thunder on defense. If both Durant and Johnson come out firing from the get-go, it should be quite a high-scoring series.

The inside battle


With two consecutive Defensive Player of the Year awards under his belt, Josh Smith is no stranger to tough offensive battles, and looks to be set on eating Jeff Green alive at both ends of the floor. Though it's not as simple at the Center position, with Al Horford coming across the experienced tandem of Marcus Camby & Brendan Haywood, who look set to cause the Hawks bigs fits on the boards. It could be a matter like last year of who wins the boards will win the game.

Crawford: The X-Factor?


A finalist in the past two years for Sixth Man of the Year, could Jamal Crawford be the key to Atlanta's championship aspirations? Long lauded for his unselfishness to come off the bench, Crawford has been one of the most volatile bench scorers, and could provide serious production for the Hawks against a weaker Thunder bench. If Crawford can average more than 15 points off the bench in this series, he could be the difference between winning and losing this series.

I'm going to pick the Thunder to win, but we've already seen some wild results here, so wouldn't surprise me if it goes the other way.

After a back and forth battle, the Oklahoma City Thunder hit their stride in the second half, winding back a 14-point lead in the 3rd quarter fueled by Kevin Durant to take home-court advantage away from the Hawks.

Thunder dominate to take 2-0 lead back to OKC


The Thunder could not have been more convincing their Game 2 victory, setting up for a possible sweep back home. They caught the Hawks flat footed from the jump, with Russell Westbrook leading the charge with 23 points and 7 assists.

Hawks lose J-Smoove, Thunder now one win away from history


Could it be all over? The Hawks' Josh Smith suffered a severe ankle sprain which will see him miss the rest of the Finals. Leaving the Thunder with the opportunity to sweep the Hawks and take the series on their home floor. Kevin Durant again proved too much of an offensive onslaught for Atlanta to handle with 43 points and 10 rebounds.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are NBA Champions in their maiden Playoff appearance. With stars Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, James Harden & Jeff Green all under 25 years old, the Thunder look well on their way to a dynasty of dominance.

Following in his draft colleague's footsteps from last season, Carmelo Anthony has officially opted out of his last year in Denver, opening the Melo Sweepstakes. Multiple teams are in the running, with the frontrunner being the Los Angeles Clippers, who after missing out on LeBron James last season still managed to finish second in the West, and have the space to offer a huge contract. Vince Carter's days in Orlando seem set to be over, with the Magic declining his $18m option. Is this a play for new stars in Orlando? Or are the Magic taking apart the squad that lead them to two straight Finals before this season?
