You forgot about Iverson, but it's Lebron in a good way, and Kobe in a bad way

i think iverson lost alot of popularity after he tossed his gf out the house naked. then the no practice comment. that thing cemented him as one of the most hated players in the nba. when someone cries about not wanting to practice it upsets many people including me.

I put Duncan on there because he won two of the last 3 MVP awards, and a championship in their too.

But Duncan is a boring player to some people, which makes him less populair then the spectaculair players.

This is such a tough question to answer because really there isn't just one. Here is the definition of the word "popular":

popular- 1. Widely liked or appreciated: a popular resort.
2. Liked by acquaintances; sought after for company: “Beware of over-great pleasure in being popular or even beloved” (Margaret Fuller).
3. Of, representing, or carried on by the people at large: the popular vote.
4. Fit for, adapted to, or reflecting the taste of the people at large: popular entertainment; popular science.
5. Accepted by or prevalent among the people in general: a popular misunderstanding of the issue.
6. Suited to or within the means of ordinary people: popular prices.
7. Originating among the people: popular legend.

Using this definition I'd have to rule out Kobe, Duncan and Vince off the top, despite the large fanbase they all have. Without a shadow of a doubt the vote goes to someone who wasn't included on the poll: Allan "The Answer" Iverson with Shaq coming in second and LeBron closely behind and gaining on both by the minute.

Of, representing, or carried on by the people at large:

Both AI and Shaq did something that wasn't so popular with certain ppl. AI had that rap song wheres he insulted gays and Shaq swears on national TV (and makes bad movies) whereas Lebron is squeeky clean. So by definition I'd go with Lebron

Good points Matt, but I don't think they were enough to suggest that they lost any popularity as a result of those things. I agree about LeBron though he is quickly becoming the face of the league and IMHO that's a good thing!

I voted Vince Carter because of the All-Star Game results.

But I think Kevin Garnett and LeBron James are also the most popular players of the NBA with Vince Carter.

I don't think Shaq and Kobe are that popular.

What makes Iverson so popular is his image. When he first brought the gangsta image into the NBA, he was known as probably the most popular player around especially when he led the Sixers to the Finals. I think he was the one to start the cornrows in the NBA as well and the baggy shorts. Not only that, but most of the girls love him because they like him for some reason. (I guess because of his thuggish image and they think its cute or somethin) Whenever I went to a Grizzlie game when they played the Sixers, they like had a section of all girls where you can hear them cheering for Iverson everytime he got the ball and everytime he made a shot. It was like he had homecourt advantage

Iverson certainly gained instant popularity due to his willingness to speak his mind and the growing infatuation with the anti-hero. Once upon a time, such a character would be the villan in sports and movies alike. These days, that could be the person with plenty of adoring fans or the one who saves the day in Hollywood.

I don't think Kone can be classified as most Popular atm for his trial. To be popular you must be liked, and many people don't like Kobe because of the rape trial, or atleast don't condone his actions.

Lebron seems the perfect fit. All-Star votes are a good indicator. Grant Hill was always up there too bad he can't play no more.
