For Phenom CPU users

Sat Sep 08, 2018 3:55 am

After wwe 2k18, now NBA 2k19 will not support Phenom CPU

Why specifically Phenom?

No support SSE 4.1 and above instructions.
This trend in many games has long been observed. Here's the turn came to 2k19(((

Yep, keep in mind these CPus were produced between 2007 and 2011 with one Athlon overreaching into 2013.
It's just old tech and as mentioned game developers simply use the newer instructions to optimize.

For those affected, keep in mind that AMD actually made some good progress in CPUs which in turn lowered the costs of new high performance parts.

NBA 2K due to how consoles work is happy enough with any modern 4 core CPU with decent clocks. You can get your hands on 6 core CPUs with decent clocks and good IPC for relatively cheap these days, so if you need to upgrade you've hit relatively good time to do so.

The issue is of course that you will probably need to upgrade almost everything at this point if you're still running Phenom based platform - new CPU at this point means new motherboard and new RAM. And there you're not too far from getting new PSU, GPU and perhaps new drives including an SSD.

That's the point.
But I am enraged by another. 2k19 uses SAME engine, have SAME graphics as 2k18 and reading the different forums i cant say that the game is more optimized than 2k18 (which I play on the max settings on my phenom ii). So it just a marketing thing and other reasons can not be in this case

Not really. Just because you don't see what happened deep under the hood doesn't mean it's the "same" engine.

Typical development process includes cleaning up, refactoring, optimization and rewriting code while working on related features. So chances are some dev was working on some parts of the game and used newer methods somewhere deep that are implemented with SSE4.1/4.2.

You can try to report that to 2K customer support and hope devs release a patch that provides compatibility with SSE3.
That said minimal requirements clearly list minimum CPU requirements as

Intel® Core™ i3-530 @ 2.93 GHz / AMD FX-4100 @ 3.60 GHz or better

In other words CPUs with support of SSE4.1 and 4.2.
I don't see an issue with using over a decade old tech.

EDIT: Also note that consoles support SSE 4.1 and 4.2. That's your baseline hardware.

Dommy73, Useless. There were petitions for WWE2k18 - nothing.
Yes, technology can be old (which in the last game were supported with no problems), but there is enough powerful nowadays to play modern games... So there is no excuse for the developer, except marketing.
And there would be an opportunity, I already would have Core i9-7920X with GeForce Titan X...

There many exsamples, when at start games have no support Phenom CPUs: Metal gear Solid 5, Resident Evil 7, No man's sky, Dishonored 2, Mafia III, Final Fantasy XV etc., and after support patches this games run fine on Phenom. So So tech. is old, but proven

You keep saying marketing, but 2K or VC do not profit off of hardware or console sales.
So who is supposed to profit here? Intel? AMD? Sony? Microsoft?

Or... it's just that they rewrote some part under the hood and used the instructions. Hell, or compiler started using it. Definitely more plausible than conspiracy theory.

profit is that i was planned to buy this game and developer disable this plan. and I'm not the only one

UPD. Found that on official 2k site Phenom exists in system requirements https://support.2k.com/hc/en-us/article ... quirements,
but it doesnt exists on steam page.
I don't understand 2k mind

damn this affects me.

The 2K page was updated couple of hours ago, so maybe they will release a patch.

It will be more than one, that's for sure.

cant decide what I should do. I cant play the game unless there is a patch or I make some some changes to my pc

With 2k's methods of doing business, what makes you think 2k doesn't have some kind of monetary stake in Intel, AMD, Sony and Microsoft? They don't do jack unless in benefits them monetarily.

I think I may have some good news!

I'm working on the tutorial right now. Also checking for any issues with the workaround

I have to say, now that I've played it quite a biy, it's not the same graphics as 2K18. The HD quality on close ups is the best it's ever been. And while the lighting is still unrealisticly dark, it has improved over 2K18. The players also have SLIGHTLY more muscle.

But, I get your general point.

Well, 2K doesn't develop the game, actual devs from VC do. As explained already it's not that hard to use the SSE4.1/4.2 stuff in good faith.

And doing what you suggested might run afoul of laws.

I guess it just depends on each person's system and settings.
