college .. what is it like?

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

really? what happened afterwards?

Not sure man. This happened a couple of years or the year before I got there. Near the bar there's a hall and a cafeteria and some other stuff, and this fool apparently bursts in and just starts shooting.
But that can happen anywhere, it happened at another university here I think last year... just depends on the crazy ass individual!

Have you started yet Tombz? Going alright? How are the ladies? :D

I live in the vancouver area too, and just curious which universities tombz and idiot are going to. SFU? UBC? UBC is the one with the pub, isn't it?

I'll be graduating high school this coming june, and I expected university to be way tougher, but from the looks in this thread, I might have been happily mistaken...

Man I've finished one course and doing the next - that's how much I love it  When I first started I thought, "Nah, there's no way I can leave a 2000 word essay till the last minute, still get it done on time and get a decent grade"... then I found out I could do that! :P I guess the further you get, the better you become at leaving things till the last minute. LOL - BUT DON'T DO THAT, IT'S DETRIMENTAL TO YOUR HEALTH. I just don't care personally :)

Disclaimer... this is bad, very bad
Last semester, I had an essay to do for intro to ethics... and I just could not be bothered. I picked up the books for it the day before it was due, and came home ready to work at 6pm. I had been getting like 3 hours sleep a night (because all my semesters work was due in a two week period at the end of the sememster) and I hadn't done much during the semester. I skipped that class a fair bit too... So anyway, I fell asleep on the couch before I even started! Woke up half an hour later so dazed I didn't know where I was. I stumbled around the house trying whatever I could to wake myself up. Got back to work, and realised I didn't understand anything I was reading!!!! I was ready to give up :) But I persisted of course. Turns out the first book I went through was just poorly written. I finished the essay on time, and got like the 2nd highest grade out of everyone. It wasn't a great one but they were harsh markers.

I managed hand in all my other shit on time, passed everything and got some ok marks too. I sat around for about 10 weeks and then worked my butt off the last 3 or so weeks when everything was due. Uni does that to you sometimes, because nobody's going to get on you to study. After high school I promised my self I was going to cruise, just make sure I pass everything and get my degree(s).

Depends what type of person you are. I'm doing something worthwhile now so I'm more motivated then I've ever been - I'm starting to enjoy what I'm doing, really get into it. At the same time I'm as lazy as I've ever been, so it's a constant battle within myself :D
Just think about all the ladies you'll meet that you would otherwise never see, and you'll get through it. You won't learn much, but you'll survive

enjoy the first day dude...

PS: where are the Yankee's to share their experiences? I know there's gotta be atleast a couple (y)

yeah i did that on my first assignement and got 78%, so, i did that with every assignment. In one unit i got 25% on 2 tests (10% each), but did an assignment the day before it was due and got 93%

now i gots 1 1/2 weeks to do an assignment that has 30 references....30

I live in Port Coquitlam. Haven't decided which universities I'm going to. Might go to Eastern Canada, or maybe even down to the States.

Yeah, I also would like to hear about the university situation in the States.

i'm goin to sfu... surrey campus... tomorrow!!! i'm so fuckin scared... i hardly knows anyone there :x bah!!11 why is summer so damned short :x

it also seems like the surrey campus is not as good as the main campus, to most people at least, in a way... because its admission requirements are lower, and it's inside a fricken mall :o!!1 but the place is smaller, class size is smaller, the library is awesome, transportation is awesome too (5 min walk from my house to skytrain station....skytrain for 20, 25 minutes, 5-10 min walk to the school) and it's mostly comp stuff so ...yeah :D

funny thing is that i live in burnaby, pretty close to the sfu up there...

...and to add to that - if you have a chance to do electives in different faculties (ie: law, phsycial education, science, anything really) take it, because variety is good, and in your own course you might only get to see the same people :D

I'm going into my third year now.
I'm studying Electrical Engineering at my Uni.

Let me give you some advice.
The first few weeks are easy. Wait till you see the first midterms. When you see the finals, midterms are like nothing. I know other schools have different systems, but at my school, we have all our finals in one week. Last semester, I had 3 finals in one day! That was just brain drenching.

Anyways, College is a lot harder than high school. After a couple of years, it starts getting real hard. It also depends on your major. I have a pretty tough major and it's very demanding of me. But there is nothing you cannot do. Everything is logical and all you need to do is have a good work ethic. Make sure you do all your work and do everything your professor asks you. Then you should be fine.

Even though college is harder, it's a lot more fun than high school.
First of all, the girls there are AMAZING!!! My uni has 38,000 students and 60% are girls. Believe me, I see hot-ass girls with every turn of the eye. They are in every corner. It's amazing.
Second, it seems as if every day is a weekend. And like someone above mentioned, you will have a lot of free time. You need to use it right otherwise it can lead you to your destruction (haha ... just kidding). But yeah, it's important to plan out things ahead of time in college. You want to be as organized as possible.

Well those are my two cents on how college is. I'm not trying to scare you or anything but it is what people expect it to be. It's challanging, it's fun, and there's a lot of FREEDOM!!! It's hell of a lot different than high school.

Yeah you got it one. It's not bad if you want to try something different.

Good advice Propulsiondj (y)
