I think that's the goal, until they get a group of players they like. In the meantime, they're not keeping anyone they don't see a future for in Philadelphia, nor overspending for veteran talent in the name of mediocrity.

I get you mp3, it's Hinkie's doings that leads to mass losses and it feels somewhat deliberate. Therefore the term 'Hinkie special' exists, which is lowball and unwillingness to commit at any level. In result they continue on having historically bad stretch this year as usual. When will this end?

Good question. At some point, they'll need to make a move that sets them on a better path. Continued improvement by the cornerstone players that they ultimately keep will obviously help there as well.

Next season Joel Embiid will hopefully be back healthy, Dario Saric could come over from Europe and they could add two top five draft picks (Ben Simmons and Jamal Murray according to current mocks). Plus they have a massive amount of cap room.

Obviously they would probably still be a couple of years away from being a playoff team, but they should slowly start winning more games.

That's the thing though: they haven't shown any signs of trying to keep the young talent that they're tanking for and trying to get better. I could see them trading Noel once Embiid is healthy and Saric when he develops

The most noteworthy player that's actually suited up for them that they've traded away is Michael Carter-Williams, and it's highly questionable as to whether he's going to be a star in the league. I don't see them rushing to trade Noel or Okafor (not that they can deal the latter yet, of course).

Don't get me wrong but I think it's not just about retaining their own drafted talent but it's also about signing, spending, and dealing for quality talents with preferably upside since they're building a young team. Check how Anthony Davis and the Hornets came to be. Or the Wolves, or even the Blazers. You could argue they made valiant effort to get better each year using various method such as signing and trading for players with potential or better talents(ie. took on Eric Gordon gamble, Kemba's an awful player and team was shit but they managed to build a playoffs team via spending money and so on). However Hinkie's method is extremely elementary and boring. His way is via extreme tanking, drafting, and cap saving until you hit the jackpot from draft. Until then he will present you a D-league caliber team. Hot damn. Have some faith in your players and make effort to sign guys like Lin, O'quinn, Speights, and Crowder to actually get better as many of FAs are actually good and just in need of playing time.

Honestly I am hoping things don't work out too well for Hinkie in the end. Fast track to build a contender team via tanking for years? .....

Even after they get better, it'll be a long road until they're a contender, if ever. Right now, their only options are drafting promising young players, or signing quality free agents. The latter is easier said than done; I can respect not wanting to overspend for decent journeyman and pretend they're stars.

if you're not spending the money, you need to draft well and/or hope you draft when a once in a generation type player is in that draft

the Pelicans are ok but the rebuilding process was sped up when they drafted the Brow. E. Gordon wasn’t a risk. he came aboard because CP3 asked for a trade. he’s hurt and overpaid. he’s gone after this year.

what have the Charlotte jordanaire’s done? they haven’t drafted well, Stephenson signing was a bust, and this year’s signings are cast offs. and Jordan decided on drafting Kaminsky instead of taking the wealth of draft picks Boston was offering

the twolves have terrible for a while. maybe they had a chance to be decent but key players were injured in various years. Love wasn’t going to resign and thanks to the Cavs they got Wiggins. Rubio still stinks. It’s taken some time and it’s been painful but they are in a good position due to Wiggins acquisition and drafting KAT

an interesting rebuild is the Celtics. i think they have a great coach in stevens and have a 10 deep rotation.

To add to the point, teams are not really mortgaging their future for signing guys like Lin, Lamb, Aminu, Ezeli, Ed Davis, so on. They are cheap and useful. The 76ers are unique tho. They haven't done anything like that for several years now. Rather you look at the names they've gotten rid of, for nothing, I sure think they deserve mockery coming their way. People just mention MCW but going back year or two, Jrue, Thad Young, Hawes, Dedmon, etc were all sent packing. Since then they been rotating guys from D-league and lottery.

For example, paying McDaniels for 3-4 years wouldn't have been mortgaging the future. Keeping Hawes wouldn't have been expensive. Then Hinkie wants Canaan on the floor this year despite horrendous chemistry and against coach's will, because they have to pretend they got something out of McDaniels trade. Good one.

Jrue - effectively got Noel and Saric for him and he's been struggling mightily to stay on the floor since the trade, so I think the Sixers made out pretty well here.
Thad - wanted out. Got Miami's first rounder for him, better than doing nothing and watching him walk.
Hawes - was about to become an UFA, no point in paying him, he's sucked after signing his new contract. Actually, he's always sucked except for that one season.
Dedmon - marginal player, word is they wanted to sign him to a Hinkie special but he declined, then went on to sign a very similar deal with Orlando. Not really a guy you lose sleep over.

The problem I have with Hinkie is he could have signed some young and at least semi-competent ball handler. It was well known before the season started that Wroten and Marshall are both out until December most likely. Canaan is so awful. In back-to-back games now, the Sixers have set the NBA's season high in turnovers (27 vs Dallas, then 29 vs Indiana). Most of that is terrible guard play and inability to make simple passes. It's getting hard to watch now, even for me.

Yeah, I wouldn't call letting those guys go a huge blunder. Holiday was an All-Star in 2013 and had a fine season that year, but he's been banged up since and isn't playing at that level now. At some point though, they do need to sign a few more competent players to affordable deals.

When attempting to play any kind of defense at all became a foul on Philly, you should say. What a screwjob. The most egregious examples were when Covington took a charge light years before getting run over by Wade and still got the blocking foul (and no, he wasn't in the restricted area) and when Canaan got hit in the head by Bosh, fell down and into the way of some other Heat player... foul on Canaan. Fuck those refs.

That and the hack-a-Whiteside that didn't exactly work out and one could argue killed Philly's momentum. Pretty rare to see someone doing this while leading. Besides, Whiteside is at least hitting over 50% so hacking him is a dubious strategy, unless he's having a particularly shitty day.

4+1 is the definite trend but the 76ers are probably forced to play 2 bigs especially with Embiid to look forward to, they got 3 big rotation coming for the future.

Hardly. They lose with him, lose without him. Rubio is shoots 36% and makes 3's at half that clip.

How about reg Jackson just killing him in the 4th qtr. Minny would be better off seeing what they have in Lavine. Rubio is what he is and team shouldn't commit big dollars to him

I feel like I've seen the 76ers leading in like half their games this season, only to be run down in the fourth quarter. They clearly try their best to win but their lack of depth kills them.

Hinkie needs to strengthen the team soon. Yes, being this bad will get them a good draft pick, but it also instills a losing culture into the playing group. And that can be hard to get rid of.
