Not every one lives in North America or willing to wake up ungodly hours just to watch an NBA game (for guys in yurop) or has NBA League Pass or has the time to browse box scores of all the games during the week just to find a decent FA pick up.
If anything it makes the league more competitive.

Bidding system would add more tactic/managing element(with waivers/money) to the game and maybe put less importance into scouting.
