Yeah I think people just need to relax and let it do its thing

For some reason I feel we are going to be in for a treat. I just have a feeling Leftos really came through for us. Lets just be calm and wait for some hopefully great news

Steam's modern format compresses (most) everything to shrink your download sizes. Now it's basically extracting a 41GB .7z to the 50GB or whatever the full game is going to be.

The way around this would have been to make you download more and then just unpack the base files. Which is what games that are about 1/10th the size do.

You'd have to do all this even if you hadn't preloaded the game.

What???

Yes they could have. If a game is predetermined to be "unlocked" at a certain time, then yes they do have the arbitrary decision making ability to say "if game A is X size and compressed by Y amount, then we can begin the unpacking process Z amount of time in advance."

Not to say you know EXACTLY how long a game will take to unpack but even if you BEGIN the process ahead of launch time. If it's 1PM EST as their normal release schedule or if it's midnight on a release date.

If Steam can set an automatic process to unlock something initially at 1PM EST tomorrow and within 24 hours change that "automatic" process to release 13 hours earlier. Then that same automatic process could have begun the "unpack" process 30 mins before that release time.

Steam's "modern" format -- is that a joke.

I would have to do all "what" if I hadn't preloaded? If I would have bought the game at release time, there would be NO encryption therefore NO unpacking.

I will end this as I started this:

WHAT????

The waiting continues -- frustrating.

Ridiculous...

No, they couldn't, the unlock is basically automatic.

Thanks for the explanation, all of you.

I would definitely have chosen (if I had a say) your option. I went ahead and left my computer on today while I was at work intentionally to download this game, and now I'm having to wait while it unpacks it. Honestly with my internet connection, the unpacking is probably taking as long as it took me to download it (although as I mentioned I was gone while it downloaded).

I just don't get it. But yeah, making the file bigger and having less to unpack would definitely have been preferable...

Unpacking/decrypting/whatever Steam is doing isn't using your internet connection. Not being able to read from one drive and write to another is slowing the whole process down though, my CPU is barely being used.

I have been at it about 20 minutes and it's half way done. Make sure you have enough space on your hard drive. My Steam folder is using 97GB right now just for 2K15. Until everything is complete, make sure you don't run out of space.

Says it's still In Queue (and thus no ETA) even though I still see stuff being updated in the "downloading" folder in "steamapps". Should I let it go or restart Steam?

Lol... that would hurt if It got right to the end and said "out of space, start again".

I might cry.

Well go to bed and cry myself to sleep.

Anybody that's upset that they have to wait while the game unpacks should be happy that we got a midnight release. You very well could have been doing this 12 hours from now. It's a minor annoyance, relax.

Couldn't the textures/sounds have been compressed to reduce the 50GB footprint? The way Steam is setup I had to clear 90 GBs on my 256GB SSD to make room for the encrypted files and unlocked game.

Edit: And now I have 30 GBs of free space after the temp encrypted files were deleted.... after deleting over half of the games i had on my steam library...

Or you can use Steammover after the process is done on your regular SATA drive.

No. It's much better than their prior delivery methods.

Yes, you would still have to unpack from the 41GB download to however much it takes up unpacked.

And there would have still been encryption, there's encryption on all Steam downloads. All they do to deny preloads is withhold the key.

Just got back from GameStop. I feel like I got ripped off. YES I got the game at midnight. But they gave me a cardboard box with a steam download CARD in it. Wtf? I did not go there to get a fricken download CARD. I wanted my DVD-ROM dang it! I don't even have a case now... Stupid GameStop. The PS4 and XboxOne people walked about with SHINY yes SHINY new cases. I got screwed over here on PC, and I was the ONLY one who pre-ordered on PC at my Local Game-Stop. Everyone was like, "What is that?!" lol. Thanks 2K. ;) again. Nevertheless, I can't wait to play!

There is no Disc Version for PC. Amazon also has only this Card in a Box Crap. I guess they don't want to make 5DVDs/Box for the 45GB.
