Spurs Sign Tony Massenburg
12-Year NBA Veteran Returns To San Antonio

The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed forward Tony Massenburg. Per club policy terms of the contract were not released.
The 6-9, 250-pound Massenburg was originally selected by the Spurs in the second round (43rd overall pick) of the 1990 NBA Draft. Since that time he has played for 12 NBA teams as well as enjoying stints in the Italian League and the Spanish League.

In his 12-year NBA career Massenburg has appeared in 622 games, averaging 6.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 18.6 minutes per contest. During the 2003-04 season he averaged 4.3 points and 3.2 rebounds in 13.4 minutes in 59 games for the Sacramento Kings.

Massenburg spent his rookie season with the Spurs, averaging 2.3 points and 1.7 rebounds in 35 games during the 1990-91 campaign. In 1991-92 he saw action in one game for the Spurs before being waived on December 2, 1991.

The 37-year-old Massenburg has played for San Antonio, Charlotte, Boston, Golden State, the L.A. Clippers, Toronto, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Vancouver, Houston, Memphis, Utah and Sacramento during his NBA career. He enjoyed his best season during the lockout shortened 1998-99 campaign when he averaged 11.2 points and 6.0 rebounds in 26.6 minutes in 43 games with the Vancouver Grizzlies.

He sucks and won't play with Rasho, TD, Horry, and Rose, but I guess it's another big body for fouls when needed.

Useless trivia: If Massenburg plays for the Lakers and Mavericks before his career is done, he will have played for all four teams in California, all three teams in Texas and the two teams in Canada that began play in 1995 (of course, there is now only one team left in Canada). It would also set a new record (Chucky Brown also played for 12 NBA teams).

I think that's the only reason Massenburg keeps playing because he wants to set that record

One of the many reasons the Spurs are so successful is that year after year they bring in veterans (Massenburg being one who is proven, if unspectacular) who can go in and do the dirty work with little or no complaints about playing time or anything like that.

When it comes down to it this is a solid signing for the Spurs that really costs them nothing at all.

Ok, if he doesn't suck, then I guess no one sucks. He's not that bad, but you get the picture. There has to be a point where you draw the line and say that some players just flat out suck when compared to other NBA players.

I certainly don't expect Massenburg to play much behind the four I mentioned before, unless one gets injured. And he's not exactly your Eric Williams in the lockerroom.
