OLYMPIC BASKETBALL - ATHENA 2004

Postby Fresh8 on Sun Jun 20, 2004 3:31 pm

To try and get everyone's mind off the NBA, I think it's time to talk about the Olymplic Basketball!

The two pools have been determined and I'm sure most countries are in training or selection stages right now! I have started this thread so that we can start discussing about predictions, what your country has done, etc.

Feel free to post about your country's team roster so far or the progress they have made. Also- I think we should focus on looking at current and future NBA Players competing in the comp.

Moved from NBA Talk - I'm thinking we might keep all the Olympic discussions in Other Basketball Leagues.

I'd like to see Andrew Gaze play for Australia in one last Olympic tournament. I can understand him retiring from international competition after Syndey 2000, but as long as he's active, the Boomers could really use him. I don't really care for Shane Heal as captain.

andrew gaze, huh? namist......

I hope that rick fox, steve nash, and magloire can all play for canada along with that 7'5 rookie guy, even though i dont live there that much anymore i'd still like to see them be succesful. I would've loved it if Duncan were allowed to play for the US Virgin Islands, I could see any team going a little bit further with a player of that caliber.

All the pressure is on the US and i think that could lead to them losing again, believe it or not. Some of america's greatest players are already opting out, and my guess is that at least one of them is a result of previous players opting and a fear of embarassment in the olympics at the hands of an inferior basketball power

I miss the old "Dream Team" concept. Stern must be pretty pleased that he's got his wish, but I thought the Olympics were about (among other things) each participating country sending their best athletes to complete against each other. I'm always confident in predicting the USA to take home the gold in the basketball tournament, but it won't be as easy if they're fielding their "B" Squad.

magius, it's really unfortunate, but Canada didn't make Athens  .... they got blown out by Puerto Rico in the 3rd place game at the Americas.

If Magloire had played for them, I think it would have been a different story.
