yep thats true. You want big bucks, you eat the salary space up, you can't sign anymore. If super stars settles for 5mill a year instead of 15, that extra 10mill can bring a couple of decent players..
its so hard to find a good palyer who stays with one team now a days, and starts & ends his career there.
respect to reggie miller for being one of these people.

Sorry to ramble guys, I'm not even sure if what I said made sense, but I had to vent after reading that Vince Carter wants a trade!

No need to apologise, it's a valid topic about today's NBA. :)

I'm sort of in the middle when it comes to these issues. On one hand, I can understand the player's desire for the team to make the right moves and pay them what they feel they are worth in terms of the insane amount of money involved in professional basketball. But on the other hand, these guys are getting a lot of money to do something that many people love to do recreationally.

Perhaps the problem is the hype surrounding players as they enter the NBA. Remember Glenn Robinson sitting out at the start of his rookie campaign demanding a $68 million contract over 7 years? He had not proven himself as an NBA player, yet he was demanding a deal that was larger than those of players who had accomplished a lot in the league.

This has been allowed to happen , weither its players running coaches out of town ( alla Jason Kidd) having some self appointed General Manager title (LeBron James), or having the nerve to even bitch about getting paid millions of dollars to run up and down a court and jump.Weve promoted it , and we continue to do so, its a man made monster. Its not 100% there fault , if we were so disgusted by there behavior we wouldnt have bought there 50 dollar jersey or 120 dollar pair of shoes.

Wheres the ACLU when you really need them.

This is definitely bugging me. Even though he's not exactly a superstar in the eyes of many, you forgot about the Franchise.

Iverson is probably whining, but after that confrontation with Ford on the first day, his name has been floating around everywhere as a part of trade rumors.

Every superstar in this league save tim duncan are a bunch of big babies and whine like little kids all day long. Your getting paid 10 mil per year to play basketball for fucks sake. Can you imagine that? I dunno who's stupider -- the players, us for overpaying, or the owners for paying such ridiculous sums to people with a "talent" that in all actuality is just plain useless. I almost think basketball players would be better off getting paid like normal people, because frankly, i dont think most of them know what to do with that kind of lout. Look at the trouble these idiots are getting into. We'd be doing them a service keeping them poor so they don't have the means to enhance their stupidity.

i agree with all said but i wanna add one more point.

In a way when 'superstars' sign these contracts they have power. The team has to do what the player says and put up with his whining, especially if he cannot be replaced, because team performance is important.

Ridiculous amounts of money are inevitable in such occupations though. Professional athletes and actors/actresses are in a field where is an insane amount of money being thrown around, and their multi-million dollar earnings are a by-product of that.

It would be difficult to cut down on the big contracts, but changes to the CBA might be effective. Consider the changes that were made as a result of the lockout that prevented situations similar to the one KG placed the Timberwolves in with his extension negotiations back in 1997. The problem still exists and egos make things ugly at times, but it was much worse when a player could really hold his team to ransom.

I agree im getting sick of this BS in the NBA these players are Lucky that they get paid for playing a game we played seens we could walk.

Magic & Kareem weren't the best of friends, neither were Bird & McHale. They were able to play together. If LA surrounded Shaq & Kobe with a better cast, they can still win. I can't believe LA's breaking up because of damn egos. Magic needs to have a talk with these idiots.

I didn't read much of the thread.

The players are whining because the NBA has spoilt them. Spoilt kids whine, that's what they do.

Blame the NBA, they sucked as a parent. Don't blame the kids.

It seems to be the case for quite a few successful NBA duos. Most of them have been able to put aisde their differences and focus on a common goal though. Perhaps it has become too personal with Shaq and Kobe, to the extent that they cannot put it aside and go about their work.

Well ... they would, if Kobe and Shaq wouldnt eat so much of the cap space.

And thats the main problem. On one side players want to get paid the big bucks, yet at the same time they demand their team surrounds them with enough talent to win a championship. But because the demanding player eats too much of the cap, the teams cant. I wonder why those players dont get it in their head that they cant have both ...

Well- since this isnt a Kobe topic...i'm not going to comment on that!

But if this is bussiness...NBA players shouldnt complain about Management not being able to bring in a good supporting cast!

hmmm, the way I see this is like this-

-"Player X" comes into the NBA
-Puts up nice numbers
-Gets known by the Fans
-Rookie Contract is up
-Evveeeeeeeeryone is rockin' this dudes Jersey and he is bringing fans to the arena and is the talk of the NBA
-Owner says " here is a 7year 100mill contract" [thinks he can bring championship here and is bringing in money with his fans]
-Player accepts it, enjoys the showtime for a couple years improving the team
-players leave for one reason or anther
- team reaches the year they pay "Player X" 17mill a year
-only enough money for bench players who become starters
- team sucks
-"Player X" wants to be traded to a better team with better players

all player X fault!
he sucked up all the money, why not ttake a small deal and get a good team.
All about the money..
