NBA union director pessimistic about early collective bargaining proposal

Union director Billy Hunter addressed several players and has said the possibility of another NBA lockout next summer is possible.

`We don't come to this process as neophytes. We don't have the same kind of naivety that we had before,'' Hunter told The Associated Press. ``The guys understand that the negotiations could ultimately result in another lockout, and they have to prepare themselves for that.

``If the owners are not inclined to retreat from their current proposal, there's a high probability there can be another lockout,'' Hunter said.

I sincerely hope this doesn't come any closer to being a reality. (N)

I sincerely hope this doesn't come any closer to being a reality.

That would be devastating and disasterous! :shock:

I also hope this does not happen! We already have to wait a long time for the season to come around!

NO! I don't want any lock-out seasons in my life time......I have to go to school for a month before I see NBA..then I would have to wait over 6 months!!!

I didn't play basketball in 1999 and I didn't watch NBA so I even didn't know that there was a lock out...I was dead for basketball in 1999

Me too, pretty much but I knew there was a lock out. I remember seeing it in a news paper.

Indeed there was. It was the first time the NBA schedule was interrupted by negotiations between the owners and the players' union - I believe it happened to Major League Baseball back in 1994 or 1995. There was also a lockout before the 95/96 NBA season, but it was resolved fairly quickly with no interruptions to the schedule (and not too much fuss with the offseason either).

When the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the players' union and the NBA owners expired, they could not agree on certain terms when attempting to come up with a new CBA that governed free agency, player contracts (their size and length), the draft, etc. The players were "locked out", and all player/team talks ceased.

I certainly hope this doesn't happen. But a lot of people are upset about the CBA and all the rules about salaries and what not. It'd certainly be a good thing if the reworked the CBA.

The owners should play hardball with the players. They did last time and scored a big victory. The players should push for the abolition of the luxury tax (or a reduction in it's crush) instead of trying to break the rookie contract system and up the maximum salary limit. If the luxury tax was taken out they would get more money than under their plan.

1. Mostly money. Salaries, contracts, player benefits, contract security...you name it.
2. An agreement couldn't be reached in time, so the strike continued into what would have been the start of the NBA season.
