How can you win the finals in the association mode

I dont play most or nearly all the games. I want to know how you can win the finals. Do you need five defensive starters and some defense. I seem to get to the playoffs but after that cant get to the finals. Any advice ? also i dont like picking teams like (Miami, Oklahoma City, boston or Los Angeles because that is who seems to win right away on mine)
