Dear LiveJournal,

Other video games, TV shows, movies, general chit-chat...this is an all-purpose off-topic board where you can talk about anything that doesn't have its own dedicated section.

That was considerate of them.

Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for my copy of the special edition Ultimate Jordan to arrive. Amazon estimated it would arrive by last Friday and I've already received my copy of the Mavs' championship DVD, so if it doesn't arrive in the next couple of days I'll be chasing it up.

The 20th Anniversary special edition, or the We Threw in the HoF Speech and Put SD Footage on Blu-Ray For No Reason Special Edition?

Saw the former at JB Hi-i-Fi the other day, along with a Charles Barkley DVD, the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty Series set, and the 2009 and 2010 Lakers Championship DVDs (as one two-disc set). First time I've ever seen any NBA at all anywhere in the country.

The latter.

Yeah I saw those advertised in a recent JB Hi-Fi flyer as well, very rare to see any NBA DVDs in Aussie stores. I did actually pick up the two disc Lakers championship set for my cousin's birthday back in July.

Is that Jordan set really worth the money?

Wasn't aware those DVDs had been around that long. How have I not noticed this?

Came at a good time, though, because game 7 of the 1988 Finals was damaged beyond repair somehow. Saved me shipping in a new copy.

It's one of the best NBA DVDs out there, even the original release. As for getting the new one, I guess it's hard to justify if you're not a Jordan fan or big collector of NBA DVDs. I'm both, so for me it's worth it.

I guess you weren't inclined to look for them in JB. After all, you don't really expect to see basketball DVDs here in Australia.

That was more my point. I already own the 20th Anniversary Edition. Nothing to gain with the new version, really.

Whilst this is true and my question was rather rhetorical, they are being kept in the same section as the wrestling. So I'd have plenty of reason to be around them.

Now we just need the NBL to get around to releasing DVDs. Unlikely to happen anytime soon, though; they don't even know what games they have in their archives, much less have them in a useful format.

Fair enough. I'm a huge Jordan fan so I wanted it for my collection but I'm guessing most people who already own the set won't have a need for it.

I have noticed that not all JB Hi-Fi stores stock basketball titles. My nearest one has a section for basketball (near the wrestling DVDs, as you mentioned) that had some streetball DVDs some time back but has been empty the past few times I've browsed that section. However, another store I dropped into for a quick browse while waiting for some friends actually had NBA DVDs, which is when I picked up the Lakers championship twin pack. That was the first time I'd seen NBA DVDs in store for some time.

Last time I went to JB, all I saw was this Shaq dvd, but I kinda thought it'd be outdated because he was wearing a Heat uniform. Currently the only basketball related DVDs I have in my collection are the 2004-2005 Spurs championship and More Than A Game (even if you're not a fan of LeBron, it's worth a watch)... unless you count Kazaam and Steel  :shake:

I see a lot of really cheap championship dvds on Amazon at the moment, so maybe I'll expand upon collection once I start working again.

I don't really bother with the docos; I'll generally only get something with actual games in it. I have hundreds of those, between the official releases and games I've taped/downloaded. Stumbled across the '91 Finals on Amazon last night, which I'd missed previously. Will have to pick that up.

NBL-wise, though, I only have the '86 Grand Final, a Tigers-Titans game and a Razorbacks-Tigers game, both from '99, a 2001 pre-season Wildcats games against an NBL legends team, and a handful of games from 2006-2011. James Crawford, Ricky Grace and Andrew Vlahov were all in the 2001 game, but other than that I've not seen any of them since their retirements. Never saw Crawford or Scott Fisher in their primes, or Tiny Pinder at all. The Wildcats appear to be far more organised than the NBL with regards to old footage, even releasing a doco back in 2004, but they've never bothered to release actual games (barring game 3 of the 2010 Grand Final, which was given to returning season members this past off-season). I did run into a guy on the OzHoops boards who offered to burn me copies of the '90, '91, '95 and '00 Grand Finals, along with a Bullets-Wildcats quadruple overtime game from '94 and a Wildcats-Giants playoff game from '93 featuring a game-saving James Crawford block, but it's been months now and he's still apparently working on it, so I'm not too optimistic.

Picked up a PVR-type thing online that'll allow me to capture Foxtel to my computer in HD, so from this season I should be able to start putting together a decent collection. Mostly Tigers games, I'm guessing, since 24 of their 28 games are on TV. It's the 2006 Milwaukee Bucks all over again.

Without a Brisbane team in the NBL, I found it pretty hard to get interested, but with Mills signing with the Tigers, I think that could change. I was a Bullets fan since Shane Heal's second tenure with them and it's been kind of hard for me to pick another team outside of Brisbane because I liked the Bullets for so long.

That's rather encouraging; if the price is right, I'd definitely go to the games.

I heard $22 somewhere. Dunno whether that's accurate or not though.

September 22-24 is apparently the NBL pre-season tournament, also in Brisbane.

It's so cool and breezy outside it feels like November in SC. Of course Tuesday is the day when I don't have to walk all over campus like six times.

Speaking of Michael Jordan (yes, I'm aware that I'm a few posts late), I just got done writing an essay on how he is a hero. Three pages long (double-spaced), done in about an hour.

Actually saw a few NBA DVDs at my nearest JB Hi-Fi today, though they were ones I already had. Kind of nice to see them in Aussie stores again but I've got a region free player and they're often cheaper to import from the States anyway.

If it lands me an A, I'll post it (or preferably PM to those who are interested). If not, then I'll do the latter. But I'd imagine you would prefer an essay on Kobe, am I right?

A fact checking needs to be made to make sure you didn't make baseless claims that intrudes upon the superiority of Kobe The G.O.A.T. Bryant.

Why Kobe? You can have Yao as a subject.

It took you over an hour to write something regarding a vapid topic that was three pages long?

At least post your thesis, how is Jordan, or any sportsman, a hero?

Most Important Question: What was the assignment? I need to list the person who assigned it for future purposes.

The assignment was to pick someone (either someone in your family, or someone in the history books, someone) and describe how exactly they were a hero. If it was someone in the history books, research had to be done, but either way, there had to be textual evidence to backup your claims. I used the traits, dedication and resiliency, to describe him. I mean, common sense, a hero has to be dedicated to saving lives (or whatever it is they do) and show resiliency after let-downs, right? By hero, it doesn't exactly mean someone who saves lives, like what Kobe can do when he's bored. So if that was what you were thinking when you asked how a sportsperson can be a hero, then your idea of a hero is different than what the prompt is trying to ask. Using this biography article, that's where I got the textual evidence, which explains part of why it took me an hour.

I don't have my thesis with me right now and can't quite remember what it was, but if you're so interested, I'll PM it to you later on. And the person who assigned it isn't a specific person; all (or most at the very least) English IV classes within the school were assigned this. If you need to list a person, list whoever writes the curriculum for the class, but I'm not able to answer that. Pretty much what you see in Kobe being a "hero", the same can be applied to Jordan. After all, Jordan is Kobe's superior. :proud:

How can you forget a simple thesis statement for your simple and "easy" essay? :facepalm2:

Out of thin air, something along the lines of:

"Michael Jordan's dedication to the game of basketball and his resiliency throughout his career helped shape him into a hero."

Of course, we are all aware of Jordan's work ethic, so there's dedication, and being able to come back from retirement and win three more championships, and "The Flu Game" in the '97 Finals show his resiliency. Those are examples I used. Let me add that it's just an English paper, no need to begin to make a big deal out of it. The reason I mentioned it was because it was just something I wanted to write down on my LiveJournal, that's all.
