Derrick Rose goes retro as he wins the Slam Dunk contest
LOS ANGELES, CA -- It was a really great and competitive slam dunk contest, surely the best ending to this All Star Saturday night. Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls, edged Terrence Williams of the New Jersey Nets in the final round and got the third prize for the Chicago Bulls, following the Haier Shooting Stars and the Footlocker Three Point Shootout.First Round
On his first dunk, Derrick Rose opened the Slam Dunk Contest raising some eyebrows. He made a Dee Brown-like dunk, closing his eyes with his hands and dunking the ball with a 360 degree turn! While on his second dunk D-Rose went with a great one handed full extension reverse dunk, making a strong bid for the final round.
Score-First Dunk:48 /Second Dunk:47
Russel Westbrook had an off start. He tried to do an exquisite first dunk, trying to get the ball under both of his legs while going for the reverse dunk, but he failed and as the time was winding down, Westbrook made a simple reverse two handed dunk, earning an average score. On his second dunk though,Westbrook pumped the crowd up. He passed over two loudspeakers while doing a half behind the back dunk. Pretty impresive, but his bad first attempt couldn't secure him the final spot.
Score-First Dunk:39 /Second Dunk:48JaVale McGee used his strong elements in order to get high scores. His power and height were the main themes of his two first round dunks. McGee made a reverse dunk on his first attempt, which was judged as slightly better than Westbrook's dunk. While on his second attempt, he made a powerful right handed alley oop, while holding the rim with his left hand. Good job but still came up short because of the following guy.
Score-First Dunk:41 /Second Dunk:47
T-Lips said he was ready to bring the show to the Staples Center, and for sure he didn't disappoint nobody. On his first dunk he made a double clutch reverse dunk coming from a self oop, driving the crowd crazy! And with his second dunk he just locked his spot in the finals with the best score. Self oop between the legs dunk,a dunk that would make J-Rich proud!
Score-First Dunk:47 /Second Dunk:50Second Round
And the second round was even better. Derrick Rose went first as he was the one with the lowest score. And as we thought this last dunk from Terrence Williams could be the highlight of the night, Rose did an even better version of this. He did a cartwheel and on his way up he dunked the ball with a between the legs dunk!Surely score can't get more than 50,but this dunk sparked everyone! On his second attempt he brought the retro style back in L.A. for the second time. This time it was old 'Nique. Baseline right handed windmill ,bringing back old memories!
Score-First Dunk:50 /Second Dunk:49
Williams had also a retro like dunk as his first final attempt. On his over the loudspeaker 360 dunk he reminded us another Terrence, Terrence Stansbury who was known for his 360's in the 80's Slam Dunk contests. On the second attempt he had another 360 dunk, this time coming from the self alley oop.And it was a spectacular move as well, but he failed to get the score required, making Derrick Rose the 2011 Slam Dunk Champion.
Score-First Dunk:50 /Second Dunk:47
"It was an amazing experience" said Derrick Rose after being given the trophy. "Terrence did an outstanding job replacing Blake Griffin and giving his best on this" acknowledged "I had an MJ rock the cradle dunk as well in store, but I preferred this set of dunks as in practice I couldn't make the dunk that easily, and also it would be too much retro, right? Got to do something new, something fresh!"
"This was one of the best contests in the last years"said Kenny Smith, who was commentating along with Charles Barkley and Ernie Johnson the event "Lots of creativity, but also some of the best of the past being perfected!Loved the loudspeakers dunks as well, gotta give props to all the four contestants!"

if he did he wouldn't have got 50-47 and 47-50
...he would have killed D-Rose with 50's across the board
rematch next year!

LOS ANGELES -- It was an all star game full of highlights and showcase, though the score was really one-sided. The Eastern All-Stars crashed the opposition and beat the Western Conference All-Stars in their home ground, with a 25 point deficit. LeBron James and Derrick Rose were the leaders of the East and as a result they earned the co-MVP award.
The East All-Stars made a fast start, and after that they never looked back. With LeBron setting the pace in the first half ,the East took a five point lead closing the first half, with Kevin Durant keeping the West close. And the second quarter was on the same tone. With a 12-0 run in the start of the quarter led by Derrick Rose who was quiet till that moment,East finished the half with a 12 point lead and a blowout was clearly in store.
In the third quarter everyone in the Staples Center witnessed All-Star History from an unpleasant surprise.Danny Granger who was 0-4 till that moment got his gun and scored 5 of 5 three pointers, forming a sky-high lead for the East and with a three-pointer in the 4th quarter he tied the record of most three point shoots made in a half, but also made two other records, for most points scored in a half,as he scored all of his 26 points in the second half and for the most 3PT attempts in a half, with 8 in the half!
The rest of the team didn't slow down and besides the lone efforts of Kobe and Durant the game was over before the start of the fourth quarter. And then, the real show started. As the game was done, both teams loosened their D's and the showcase began. Monta Ellis entered the field ,and along with Kobe,Durant,LeBron and Rose teared apart the two rims!! Flashy passes, strong dunks ,many steals and blocks were the story of the quarter, with the highlight of the game being the strong poster dunk Monta Ellis server to a desperate to react LeBron James!
After the end of the match, and because LeBron and Rose had two equal performances the MVP award was handed to both of them, after the original decision of handling LeBron the award,as sources say, was changed.LeBron didn't seem confused at all.
"I'm not at all irritated by this.D-Rose was dominating as it goes, and he deserved the award too as we both had a similar game."said LeBron.FINAL SCORE: EAST ALL STARS - WEST ALL STARS 134 -109
