Yes, but their pick did end up being the first overall. In the face of such an unlucky outcome, who wouldn't wish they could take back the deal then and there?

He also seems to justify the deal by pointing out they have Mo Williams and finished out the last 22 games at .500. That's not much of a consolation prize for giving up the first overall pick.

I don't think that's what he meant. Without Mo they likely finish with a different record and different odds. Not making the trade changes the course of human history in a billion little ways and almost certainly the outcome of the draft lottery in some way, and there's still a 97% chance that pick doesn't become their's. If not, then the pick probably goes to Detroit, as the Clips lose a few extra games without Mo. [/tangent]

Perhaps, but what GM in their right mind wouldn't feel some regret or wish they could have the pick back since it turned out to be number one? I guess he's just being philosophical about it, but at the end of the day it came back to bite them.

I'm not comparing Irving to MJ in no ways, just Cleveland is not in the position to worry about picking based on position needs.

Now there's something that makes more sense, if they see Derrick more talented than Irving, then they should take him, that should be the reason, not because you want to play your 32-year old point guard, who doesn't have anything to do with their future other than being a cap killer. You don't pick based on need with the first pick, you take the best talent available.
