3rd consecutive POTG honors for Splitter; Spurs enjoying a 3-0 lead in West Semis
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (SAS :: DAL)

SAN ANTONIO, May 7 -- Caron Butler nearly gave the Dallas Mavericks some breathing space. But now they are choking -- their postseason run appears all but over. They will need to make history. Butler was just long on a 3-point attempt at the buzzer that would send the game to overtime, allowing the San Antonio Spurs to escape with a 101-98 victory and a 3-0 lead in their Western Conference Semifinals series. The Spurs trailed by as many as 10 points in the first moments of the second quarter, but took the lead for good, 49-47 at halftime and never looked back again. San Antonio gave Dallas numerous chances down the stretch to overcome that deficit, but the Mavericks couldn't take advantage of them. With the score tied at 95, DeJuan Blair airballed a free throw before sinking his second attempt to open a 96-95 edge. Blair then forced Tyson Chandler into a difficult jumper, and Manu Ginobili grabbed the rebound for San Antonio and was fouled.

Manu made both from the charity stripe to make it 98-95 and, after a timeout, Jason Kidd made a quick jumper for Dallas to reduce the deficit to one point. “We were trying to get the three, but I had the wide-open shot,” said Kidd. “I took it -- you got to react fast.” In the next play, Tony Parker had an open jumper from just inside the arc, but took a small step back to sink the 3-pointer and a 101-98 lead. The Mavericks had a chance to tie -- Butler pulled up, but his shot bounced off the back of the rim. The Spurs played with the last seconds of the clock to seal the victory. “I thought the trey was in, to be honest with you, but all you can do is hope for a good look,” said Butler, who scored a series-low 11 points, 3-of-12 shots from the field, including 0-of-4 from deep. Kidd collected 20 points, five boards and nine assists for Dallas, while Dirk Nowitzki scored a series-best 30, but it was not enough. “This is a tough one to swallow,“ said Nowitzki. “We did everything we needed to win, but when you have a good defense like they have, you can't get open shots with ease.” The Mavericks were outscored in the paint, 48-34.

“They have a hole to get out of,” said Tiago Splitter, chosen Player of the Game in all 3 games so far, scoring 18 points, 12 rebounds and two assists. Ginobili finished with 18 as well, with a little more accuracy: 6-of-16 from the floor; Splitter was 8-of-10. San Antonio goes for the sweep in two days, again in Dallas. “There's another game here, and it will be just as crazy,” said Corey Maggette, who shot 1-of-11 from the field. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, seeing that Maggette couldn't find his offense, told him to defend Butler and not worry about scoring. Maggs did it to perfection. “They're going to come and play to win. They don't care that they're down 3-0, I guarantee it. We have to approach Game 4 in the same way as we did the first three,” added Maggette. Parker finished with 13 points, while Drew Gooden and rookie James Anderson added 11 apiece for the Spurs, who outrebounded Dallas, 52-36, and had 10 offensive rebounds, with Splitter and Blair having five each. “One would say we have broken their spirit a little bit, but they are still dangerous,” said Popovich. “They have a lot of pride and they are going to be hungry. We don't want to give them a chance to come back.”

Wow, Turkoglu 6th man? Young is better, and he didn't started any game.

They almost got the win, but Manu was key with his free throws.

It was Thaddeus to me. I guess the 3PT% played a huge part for the Turk.

John Wall named Rookie of the Year
    nba.com/spurs/beat | May 8th, 2011

NEW YORK -- John Wall of the Washington Wizards is the recipient of the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy as the 2010-11 T-Mobile NBA Rookie of the Year, the NBA announced today. Durant was chosen by a panel of 125 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada; Los Angeles Clippers' Blake Griffin finished second and Minnesota Timberwolves' Wesley Johnson finished third. Wall played all 82 games for the Wizards and was second in team scoring, with 18.0 points to go along with 2.9 rebounds and a team-best 5.7 assists, shooting .484% from the field and a .328% from 3-point territory. His best performances: 18 points, five rebounds and 10 assists, November 16 vs. Toronto; 22 points and nine assists, November 27 vs. Orlando; 29 points and eight assists, December 1 at Toronto; 20 points, seven assists and five steals, December 8 at Sacramento; 16 points and 13 assists, December 26 at San Antonio; 24 points, five boards and five assists, January 5 at Philadelphia; 29 points and seven assists, January 13 at Minnesota; 13 points and 12 assists, January 29 vs. Memphis; 16 points and 16 assists, February 12 vs. San Antonio; 29 points, seven assists and four steals, March 15 at Chicago; career-high 32 points, March 27 at Golden State; 30 points and 11 assists, April 3 at Charlotte. In the first round playoffs series against Boston, Wall averaged 18.3 points and 7.6 assists.

Sweeping the T-Mobile Western Conference Rookie of the Month for the East this season, Wall becomes the first Wizards player to win NBA Rookie of the Year honors since Earl Monroe (1967-68) and Wes Unseld (1968-69) did it in consecutive years, when the franchise was in Baltimore. Building upon its already strong appeal to the nation's youth and as an Official Partner of the NBA, T-Mobile is showcasing the NBA's youngest players -- the Rookies -- through the T-Mobile Rookie Program. Highlights include rookie awards presentations such as the T-Mobile Rookies of the Month and T-Mobile Rookie of the Year, and the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam, an All-Star competition between NBA rookies and second-year players. Wall edged out the five other candidates to raise the trophy this year:

Will try to post Game 4 tomorrow. It's like I want to finish the season as soon as possible, can't wait for the offseason.

River Walk Chronicles ♦ D-League Report (Finals!)

Postby kibaxx7 on Sat May 14, 2011 10:30 am

New D-League champ decided today: Energy @ Toros, Game 3
    nba.com/spurs/beat | May 9th, 2011

SAN ANTONIO -- The spotlights are on the sky of Cedar Park, Texas, in the Cedar Park Center. “D-League Finals, up and coming players, this is what it’s all about. Game 3, the two best teams in the league — don’t get no better than this,” said today Marcus Cousin. Just as a certain Hakeem Olajuwon made the difference back then for the Houston Rockets or as a big guy named Tim Duncan is still doing it for San Antonio, tonight Cousin could be the difference. His battle with Omer Asik and Gani Lawal will be a key; with another solid performance in a Game 3 victory, he could be awarded the D-League Finals MVP without any doubts. Energy point guard David Washington commented, “We’re just tough as nails. We always make it tough on ourselves, but we always find a way to climb out of a foxhole. Home-court advantage doesn’t matter. It depends a lot on the character of the players, how you respond under pressure.”

    Image

Game 1 • Iowa @ Austin Stop planning the parade route; cancel the coronation for the Austin Toros. The Iowa Energy is here to play. Led by some explosive offense from shooting guard Jake Robinson, Iowa turned the D-League Finals upside down with a shocking 102-93 victory over the heavily-favored Toros in Game 1. Robinson went for 8-for-19 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc as the pressure-tested Energy withstood a big game from Cousin and a bad game from small forward Paul Sherman to ambush the Toros, who came into this series as odds-on favorites, posting a regular season best 43-7 record. For the Toros, the loss came in the form of Iowa's defense, which silenced everyone except Cousin and sixth man James Gist with a thoroughly rolling defensive performance. Starting for Austin, Jeremy Ryan and Dan Hicks combined for eleven points. “I don't know if we could ever have a better defense,” said Sherman. “We contested shots. We did an unbelievable job, and that's what it's going to take to win this trophy. I would have liked to score a little more, but this is a team win.”

Robinson finished with 31 points, totally outplaying a perplexed Ryan at the SG slot. He shook off a slump and picked up the slack for Sherman, who was limited to ten points on an uncharacteristic 2-of-10 shooting night; he clearly was in the crosshairs of Austin's defense. “I don't look at us as underdogs,” said Energy coach Nick Nurse, who managed a perfect game. Nurse rotated his big men to account for early fouls by Asik, assigned by the Chicago Bulls last month. And he got some help from 6'11'' center Chris Gray, who had six DNPs in Iowa's last eight games. Gray did the best job on Hicks, limiting him to two points when defending him. “They took everybody else out of the game,” said Toros coach Brad Jones. In Austin's first home loss since February, the Toros endured a combined 4-of-18 from Ryan (six points) and Hicks (five). The team had 27 turnovers (yes, 27) and just 13 assists in the entire game. “This puts a lot of pressure on us for the next game,” said Cousin, who led Austin with 21 points, 9-of-11 from the field, and nine rebounds. Gist was the only other player from Austin in double figures, with 16 points and eight boards.

    Image

Game 2 • Austin @ Iowa Only three days later, it looked like the Toros were back to their monster regular season form. Ryan figured out Iowa's defense -- just in time to save Austin's title run. Ryan scored 21 points, seven before halftime and then took complete control of the second half, with 14, as the Toros were on a rampage, for a flawless 109-93 victory over the Energy that evened the NBA Finals at one game each. A decisive Game 3 will be needed tonight to decide the D-League's new champion. Again showing his outstanding post tendencies, Cousin scored 17 points as he helped the Toros avoid elimination. “We always believe that Jeremy can make miracle shots and save us, even when things are not going well for him the game before,” Cousin said. In Game 1, Ryan made just 2-of-11 shots as he was shadowed by Robinson. Afterward, he said he needed to figure out Iowa's game and the rest of their blueprint.

“I just attacked them, put them on their heels,” said Ryan, who made 15-of-16 free throws and handed out nine assists for the Toros, who also enjoyed some help from two small forwards, Barry Myers and his backup Eddie Banks; they had 17 points apiece. “Hopefully, this momentum will carry us throughout Game 3 and we will be the winners,” said Banks. “We're crushed. I mean, we had a winnable game,” commented Iowa's Joe Patterson, who led his team with 16 points. “We had them on the ropes. There's no ifs, no buts. We had them on the ropes and they found a way to get out.” Gist was limited by Lawal, assigned by the Phoenix Suns (11 points for Iowa) to only 7 points. Gist said, “He does what he usually does, he affects shots around the basket. He came out focused and I couldn't find my game.”
