Terrence Williams named Most Improved Player
    nba.com/spurs/beat | May 3rd, 2011

NEW YORK -- The National Basketball Association announced today that Houston's Terrence Williams is the 2010-11 winner of the league’s Most Improved Player (MIP) Award. The annual award is presented to a player who has made a significant improvement from the previous season. “I’m honored,” said Williams, who was acquired by Houston in last February's trade deadline from New Jersey. “Above anything else, this is a franchise award. It's yet another indication the Rockets are moving in the right way. The individual recognition is humbling, but team success means more to me than anything else. I will work as hard as I ever have to improve and have a great season next year.” Williams is the second Rockets player in a row to win the award, as point guard Aaron Brooks won it last year.

Williams, who this season was voted by Western Conference coaches to the All-Star team for the first time, started all 78 games he played this season and averaged 14.4 points per game, along with 6.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists. He also shot .414% from the field and .338% from 3-point land, registering career highs in points (1122); rebounds (472); assists (372), steals (83), blocks (32), field goals made (383) and free throws made (290). Last season, he averaged 8.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists with New Jersey. “We’re very thrilled Terrence won the Most Improved Award,” said Rockets general manager Daryl Morey. “His hard work and dedication to the game is duly recognized by this award.” Williams received votes from a panel of 121 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada and edged out the five other candidates:

At least it's an interesting series now.

Roddy had a great game. And they are starting Stevenson, but don't give him much burn. He's a great defender, he will surely get more playing time now.

I never had faith in him in RL...but at least he's helping you out here good, job (Y)

maybe u can try to sweep before TD returns...rest him up for the WCF

Yeah, in real life he's not getting many playing time :( I highly doubt a sweep here...

Tomorrow -- Game 2.

South American 1-2 punch takes Game 2 for Spurs; Mavericks never lead and fall to 0-2 hole
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (DAL :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, May 4 -- Manu Ginobili explained his latest big performance by complimenting fellow international star, Dirk Nowitzki. “When you play against the best, it brings out the best in you,” Ginobili said. Manu had 20 points, 12 of them coming from the charity stripe, to help the San Antonio Spurs hold off the Dallas Mavericks, 113-97 for a 2-0 lead in the West Semis; the Spurs led the entire contest, coming out strong from the opening tip, 12-2 to start the game, and nearly running Dallas out of the building in the first quarter. The Mavericks went almost five minutes without a field goal, hitting only four free throws. Tiago Splitter had 18 points, 16 boards and two blocks for the Spurs, which built a 22-point lead in the mid of the second period, then withstood a late surge to get the W. The game matched two of the best worldwide players in the game in the Argentinian and the German. Neither disappointed. Ginobili darted through crowds of defenders on the dribble, drawing fouls in almost every penetration to the hoop. Nowitzki, who finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, also hit several big baskets, including an array of driving layups and jumpers from inside the arc, as Dallas tried to claw back in the second half.

However, Nowitzki turned the ball over two times and had to pass on some accesible looks mostly because of the way he was hounded by Splitter. “We have to do a better job... I have to do a better job taking care of the ball,” Nowitzki said. “In the second half, we fought back but we put ourselves in too big of a hole too early.” The Mavericks were as close as 68-62 when Jason Kidd hit a 3-pointer, but then the Spurs started hitting clutch shot after clutch shot. James Anderson started it with a 3 of his own and Corey Maggette hit a pair of tough jumpers before making his only 3 of the night. Then Tony Parker, running the break, found Ginobili open in the corner for another trey. Splitter faked the shot as a defender flew past, hesitated a moment and nailed a layup to put San Antonio up 83-64, a 15-2 run, to send the sellout crowd into a frenzy. After Splitter scored again inside, Drew Gooden scored an up-and-under to seal the issue. The Spurs bench, led by Gooden and Anderson, defeated Dallas', 35-28; they scored nine points each. “As long as we remain confident, we're able to come up with some big shots,” said Parker, who scored 14 points and 11 assists. “The reserves came in and made some big, big plays for us.” Maggette finished with 15 points and DeJuan Blair added 11, as the Spurs drawed 18 team fouls from Dallas for 32-of-34 shots from the charity stripe. Ginobili shot a combined 6-of-30 in this two games, but made up for it with his agressiveness in drawing those fouls, and his flawless free throw shooting.

Splitter has been showing his “Tenacious D” lately. Shifting between Nowitzki, Tyson Chandler and Brendan Haywood, the German found his way most of the time to score, but both centers were held to single-figures in points and rebounds in both games so far. The Brazilian has been finding himself on the floor in crucial junctures, specially with Tim Duncan out. “That's the ultimate compliment right there,” said Splitter, “when your coach and your teammates believe in you. That makes it a lot easier to go out to the court.” Kidd finished with 22 points and 11 assists for the Mavericks, and Caron Butler had 21, including a couple of alley-oop dunks on feeds from Kidd. Rodrigue Beaubois again showed his great form with 15 points and four assists in only 14 minutes. “When you're not ready to attack them, you can't expect to win,” Beaubois said. The series now shifts to Dallas for Games 3 and 4. “This team's too good. They got up and defended us, they were all over us, they wouldn't let us do anything and we just stood there and watched. We must take advantage of homecourt in the next couple of games, or we will be finished.”

Well-deserved award for him. Augustin and Kleiza had some nice improvements too, the others improved in points or rebounds but fell in field goal percentage.

Thanks man, nice to have you back! It's gonna be tough now, playing in Dallas. Beaubois has been great for them.

Hedo Turkoglu named Sixth Man of the Year
    nba.com/spurs/beat | May 5th, 2011

NEW YORK -- Hedo Turkoglu of the Phoenix Suns is the winner of the NBA Sixth Man Award as the league’s best player in a reserve role for the 2010-11 season, the NBA announced today. Lamar Odom of the Los Angeles Lakers finished second and rookie Tiago Splitter of the San Antonio Spurs finished third. In order to be eligible for the awards, players had to have come off the bench in more games than they started. A sixth man in 72-of-82 games played this year, Turkoglu was fourth in scoring with the Suns, averaging 11.9 points to go along with 2.9 rebounds, 4.3 assists, while shooting .462% from the field and a .412% from 3-point land, 10th best in the league. Some if his best games from the bench were: 20 points and six assists, at Portland, December 7; 18 points, five rebounds and five assists, at Dallas, December 17; 18 points, against New York, January 7; 19 points, at New York, January 17; 27 points and eight assists, against Boston, January 28; 10 points, seven boards and eight assists, versus Denver, March 10; 19, six and eight, at Los Angeles against the Clippers, March 20; 24 points, six rebounds and nine dimes, versus New Orleans, March 25; and 14 points and 11 assists, against Minnesota, April 11.

The versatile forward from Turkey becomes the fifth Suns player to win NBA Sixth Man honors, joining Eddie Johnson (1988-89), Danny Manning (1997-98), Rodney Rogers (1999-00) and Leandro Barbosa (2006-07). The 2010-11 NBA Sixth Man Award presented by Kia Motors is part of a series of on-court performance awards called “The NBA Performance Awards Presented by Kia Motors.” The awards are part of a multi-year marketing partnership that makes Kia Motors America the official automotive partner of the NBA. The series also includes the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month presented by Kia Motors. Turkoglu received votes from a panel of 121 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada and edged out the five other candidates:

I double-checked and Duncan won't return until the West Finals. Now I gotta play at their arena... it's getting interesting.

BIG NEWS -- went from All-Star to Superstar. Believe it or not, I'm 12-0 (yes, 12-0) when playing without Mr. Fundamental. I need a bigger challenge  So, expect the Mavs avoiding a 3-0 hole.
