0-0 | RAPTORS :: Touch The Sky | Prologue. Part 1

Postby john26 on Sat May 07, 2011 7:45 pm

Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo said it best at his end of the year press conference. "This is the painful part of rebuilding. You lose a lot of games." True story. When the Chris Bosh thing went down last offseason, Toronto knew it faced a re-building project that would take some time. The loss of Bosh thrust Andrea Bargnani into the alpha dog role which was asking a lot since he was unable to successfully serve as a second banana to Bosh. Injuries to Reggie Evans and rookie Ed Davis added to Toronto's struggles in the paint as it left the Raptors thin and undersized inside. Because of this, I also had to switch my desktop background from:

to:

DeMar DeRozan took a major step in his second season doubling his scoring average, which is incredibly encouraging for a player who is only 21 years old. Outside of DeRozan, the production on the wing was extremely erratic due to injuries to Leandro Barbosa and Linas Kleiza. That put Sonny Weems into a more prominent role and eventually led to the acquisition of James Johnson from Chicago.

Despite missing the pre-season and the first six weeks of the season, rookie Ed Davis showed plenty of promise, averaging 7.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per outing. The former North Carolina prospect showed his ability to rebound, block shots and finish at a high percentage in 25 mpg.

The Raptors also acquired Jerryd Bayless from New Orleans, and the former Arizona Wildcat showed flashes, especially in the final month of the season, but lacked the consistency to permanently oust Jose Calderon from his starting spot. As for Calderon, he had the second best assist-to-turnover ratio in the NBA but saw a dip in his scoring and shooting percentage. He is still due more than $20 million over the next two seasons which is a heavy weight on a team trying to re-build. Based off this past season, Toronto has a lot of work to do before they will be able to compete for a spot in the postseason.

Season Highlight: If the Raptors showed one thing good above all else this season, it was an ability to compete with the best teams in the league. It might go to their lack of focus, but they did play the top teams harder than they did the bottom feeders. They swept the Oklahoma City Thunder, beat Orlando twice and also came out ahead over Chicago, Dallas and Boston once each.

Turning Point: The Raptors were 6-9 in late November, hardly a world-beating record but still among the playoff hopefuls in the Eastern Conference. That’s when Reggie Evans, who had been averaging more than 12 rebounds a game and giving the team a measure of toughness, broke his foot and would go on to miss 47 games. The Raptors didn’t get to 14 wins until early February, and whatever promise the team had was gone.

Post-season: From here on, normal things happened. Perry Jones, Jared Sullinger and Harrison Barnes all opted to forego college eligibility and enter the draft. May 17th arrived and the Raptors got lucky in the lottery, winning the first pick with a .156 chance at #1. They would end up using it to draft Kyrie Irving, former Blue Devils star point guard. With a .083 chance, the Jazz were assigned the second pick (the pick from New Jersey we're talking about) and snatched Perry Jones III out of Baylor. I forgot who chose who from 3-60 so the draft report ends here. Lockout didn't happen, David Stern didn't want court talks with the NBPA so there was a 2011-2012 season.

If you wanted an idea of how the Raptors' draft room looked like:

Anyways, Colangelo's fantasies on Motiejunas cost him his job. The Raptors ended up appointing Wayne Embry as interim GM to finish the draft. The next part of the prologue shows my appointment, what happens to Colangelo and the Raptors 2011-2012 season.

0-0 | RAPTORS :: Touch The Sky | Prologue. Part 2

Postby john26 on Sun May 08, 2011 7:50 pm

2011-2012

The Raptors started their 2011 offseason by signing first overall pick Kyrie Irving. Wayne Embry continued the longtime Raptors tradition of signing mediocre talent to albatross contracts they are undeserving of by resigning Joey Dorsey to a three year extension. Embry also initiated a three team trade with the Sixers and Trail Blazers that sent Gerald Wallace to Philly, Portland's 2012 first rounder to Toronto, Jerryd Bayless to Portland, Nocioni's contract and draft rights to sign Terrence Jones (from Sixers) to the Raptors. The trade basically gave Portlad cap flexibility to sign Wilson Chandler, opting for a younger but more inconsistent option.

As the season went on, the Raptors couldn't find a veteran presence to help them lead in games. They even went as far as signing Tracy McGrady mid season, and expected him to play the leader role that the youngsters can look up to. This move backfired and lazy eyes was sent to the inactive list. Instead of bringing leadership to the team, he brought his antics from a year ago in Detroit and eventually frustrated coach Triano.

In December 2011, Embry made use of the Raptors' cap flexibility that Colangelo bragged about back in his days. He had the Raptors participate in a three team trade with OKC and Minnesota, sending Portland's 2013 first rounder to the Thunder for Eric Maynor, cash considerations to the Wolves for Wes Johnson who was having a year of regression in Minny at that time averaging just 7.8 points per game. The Wolves received Jeff Green (signed in free agency) from the Thunder.

Johnson would be part of the Raptors' starting five, and the first five of Irving, DeRozan, Johnson, Davis and Bargnani alongside the bench of Maynor, Barbosa, James Johnson, Terrence Jones and Amir Johnson showed plenty of inexperience and inability to close out games down the stretch. At the start of February, Amir Johnson went down with a Torn MCL and would miss 6-8 months of play. The Raptors were forced to call up Solomon Alabi from the NBDL, and, in what looked like a panic gesture, Embry stepped down from his interim GM role. Here is how the Raptors found their next GM:

Image

Novice GM john26 quickly won the hearts of the Raptors fans by getting good value for Bargnani. Right before the trade deadline, the rookie executive traded away the former first overall pick + Tracy McGrady to the Wizards, who expressed genuine interest in his services for JaVale McGee. McGee would later be flipped to the Kings for Jason Thompson.

With just less than half a season to play, the Raptors failed to fully integrate the former Rider standout and "narrowly" missed the postseason for a 4th straight year. Highlights of the season included Irving winning Rookie of the Year honours, first to do so since Vince Carter in 1998, and Ed Davis, former All-Rookie 2nd team selection a year ago, participating in the Rookie-Sophomore contest for the Sophs in the ASW.

In the NBA Finals, Derrick Rose helped lead the Bulls to a championship, winning 4-2 against Oklahoma City. Rose was named the Finals' MVP. Other awardees were Tyrus Thomas, Bobcats (6th man), Josh Smith, Hawks (DPOY) and Ramon Sessions, Cavs (MIP). Tom Thibodeau was named COTY.

2012-2013

The Raptor started their 2012 offseason by drafting Cesar Rivera out of Argentina, who was compared by scouts to Rafael Araujo. The selection changed the fans' view of john26's executive decision. But the GM quickly reclaimed the fans' trust by shipping his draft rights with Eric Maynor to the Pacers for Lance Stephenson, Tyler Hansbrough and the Pacers' 2013 first round selection. Hansbrough was subsequently dealt to the Lakers for a first rounder and Luke Walton while Stephenson was shipped to the Clippers right before the season started for Craig Smith and another future first rounder.

Around the league, Chris Paul bolted and went to sign with the Suns while Dwight Howard stayed with the Magic. Steve Nash retired and was inducted to the HOF.

The Raptors opened their season with only one backup guard (Barbosa) so they signed Raja Bell to the league minimum. Toronto started out well, with Irving running the point, DeRozan as the team's star, Johnson as the reliable second option and Davis and Thompson manning the backcourt. They reached a season high 6 games above .500 around January. GM john26 received praise and respect around the league for saving the league's lone Canadian franchise, for acquiring young but promising pieces in Johnson and Thompson. The GM continued his persistent tinkering of the roster and was able to acquire Terrence Jones for Wilson Chandler from the Blazers in a 1-for-1 deal. But injuries to Irving, Davis and Thompson sent the high-flying Raptors back down to the face of the earth. They would drop 7 of 9 at the start of February and an embarrassing loss to the Bobcats got the young GM working the phones to look for a new coach.

34-36 :: Touch The Sky | Ep 2 : Raptors @ Nuggets

What Steve witnessed on that night...
phpBB [video]

Nash's coaching debut ends with defeat
The former two-time MVP had little trouble familiarizing himself with the Raptors system early. Toronto trailed by just a point at halftime, even putting themselves in the driver's seat when Wesley Johnson went on a scoring spree out of halftime. Johnson opened the second half with a quick 7 point run putting the Raptors ahead, 51-48. But Ty Lawson shook off a minor slump (3-8 in the first half) by making 8 of his last 10 shots while Gary Forbes hit two clutch free throws down the stretch for Denver to close the game. DeMar DeRozan led Toronto with 29 points.

Record: 34-36, 8th in the East
Up Next: Phoenix Suns, US Airways Center

Raptors strengthen frontcourt, add Evans for playoff push
March 22, 2011

Tenacious rebounder and notorious ball-grabber Reggie Evans was signed by the Raptors just an hour after their latest loss last night in Mile High City, team management announced today. Evans would be receiving the veteran's minimum, and is signed for the rest of the season. The 11-year veteran coincidentally last played with the Raptors back in 2011, when he set a career high 11.5 rebounds per game. Evans was not signed by any team in the 2011-2012 season as he recovered from a foot injury. He holds career averages of 4.3 points and 6.9 rebounds.
