Rose, Defense helps Bulls take 2-0 series lead
Nothing the Celtics threw at him was going to slow Derrick Rose down
Chicago, IL - The Celtics tried their best. They were aggresive, they played hard, and they fought for every 50-50 ball.
Too bad, maybe they are just not good enough anymore.
Behind Derrick Rose and a stifling defense in the second half, the Chicago Bulls held off a potential Celtic rally to win 96-81 for the 2-0 series lead.
Rose dropped in a game high 30 points along with 6 assist, shooting 12 for 20 from the field, includng 1-1 from beyond the arc. He would also finish with a career playoff high 6 steals, as he and the Bulls clamped down on the defensive end and forced Boston into another terrible game offensively.
Joakim Noah anchored the Bulls defense, finishing with 15 points, 16 rebounds and 5 block shots for the game. Noah grabbed 8 rebounds in the fourth quarter alone, including 3 on the offensive glass.
Carlos Boozer added 21 points and 8 rebounds as the Bulls big three dominated the second half on both ends of the floor.
The Celtics played hard, it just wasn't enough.
Despite holding the edge on the boards for most of the first three quarters, the Celtics never found a niche offensively. They kept it close with a brilliant second quarter but could only watch as Chicago finally played with more intensity and effort in the second half to pull away for the win.
"Our effort was disgusting in the first half" said Byron Scott "We were lucky to come away with the win"
Ray Allen led Boston with 25 points, but he was just 7 for 24 from the field and 3 for 8 from three point land. Allen was 0-5 from three in the second half after a perfect 3-3 showing in the second quarter.
Celtic star point guard Rajon Rondo was a lot more aggresive in this game, but he only managed 13 points and 6 assists as the Bulls held him to 3-13 shooting from the field. Paul Pierce only had 10 points while Kevin Garnett added 6 and 11 rebounds.
Rasheed Wallace, who was very effective in game 1, was shut down by Noah and Shaquille O'Neal and only contributed 2 points along with 9 rebounds in 29 minutes of play.
One positive contribution for the Cs was backup point guard Andre Miller, who despite only playing 11 minutes, managed 11 points and 5 assists on 5 of 8 shooting. He was the only Celtic who took more than 3 shots to be over .500 shooting from the field.
"I thought our bench guys did a good job" said Doc RIvers "But we just need to get some better quality looks on the offensive end. Effort was there, we need to play smarter"
The defending Eastern Conference Champions will definitely need to do that if they want to advance to the second round this season. Going back to Boston will certainly aid their cause, but right now the Bulls are just proving to be too much to handle.
The series now shifts to the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, MA for games 3 and 4.

Still, good win, no one stops Rose and that - once again - resembles the real NBA.

Great win, though. The way you're playing, looks like a sweep is coming. PS - Damn the Kings and their "King"!

Bulls shake off sluggish start for 3-0 lead
Noah's energy and intensity woke the Bulls from their slumber
Boston, MA - The Celtics were getting stops, playing smooth offense, the Bulls looked asleep and the TD Banknoth Garden was in a frenzy.
Then Joakim Noah intervened.
With 2:13 remaining in the first quarter, Noah somehow managed to jump into the midst of four Celtics to slam home a Carlos Boozer miss, silencing the Boston crowd and ending a 17-5 Celtic run.
The hustle play from Noah woke the Bulls up.
It was all Chicago from there.
Noah finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks while Derrick Rose led the way with 29 points and 7 assists after a slow start, and the Chicago Bulls take a 3-0 lead on the Boston Celtics with a 98-80 blowout victory.
"It was a big play by Joakim" said Rose "We were daydreaming or something and he just smacked us right back in it."
Noah had 4 offensive rebounds and played excellent defense on Boston's Rasheed Wallace, holding him to just 9 points on 4 for 15 shooting.
The Celtics big three played well for the first time in the series, with Ray Allen leading the way with 24 points, Pierce added 18 and Garnett finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
The same though, could not be said about their star point guard Rajon Rondo, who's offensive struggles continue as he finished with a mere 7 points and 10 assists, shooting a very poor 3 for 11 from the field and had just 2 free throw attempts, making one of them.
"They kept him (Rondo) out of the paint" said Doc Rivers "I thought he settled for jump shots a bit too much, but give them credit, they are forcing him into those."
Despite the odds against them, however, the Celtics remain optimistic about their chances.
No team in NBA history has bounced back from a 0-3 deficit and won a playoff series.
"You win a series with 4 wins, not 3" said Kevin Garnett "As far as I'm concerned, they haven't done [expletive] yet, y'all can write them as winners after they win 4 games."
The Celtics have a lot of work to do if they want to back up the words of their emotional leader though.
The entire Boston bench only produced 6 points, 4 from Kwame Brown and 2 from Glen Davis. They were 3 for 11 from the field as a unit. In comparison, the Chicago second unit produced 23 points on 9 of 16 from the field, with "Air Shaqness" Shaquille O'Neal producing 11 points in his 11 minutes off the bench (4-5 FG, 3-6 FT).
Of course, then there is the little matter of stopping Derrick Rose.
Barring divine intervention, it is extremely unlikely to see the Cs making history and advancing onto the conference semifinals in this postseason.
The potentially decisive game 4 will be back here in Boston on Thursday.
