Like X said, it's cool that you're about to finish almost exactly where the real Spurs do. I have a feeling the Spurs won't be getting any further than the second round, so hopefully you can do better than them come the postseason.

Three-headed monster kills Rockets as Spurs officially clinch Southwest division title
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (SAS :: HOU)

HOUSTON, April 1 -- The San Antonio Spurs are, for the second straight game, on the winning end of a blowout and have a new Southwest Division title to show for it. Tim Duncan scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half and the Spurs regrouped from some head-scratching losses in past weeks to clinch the Southwest crown, with a 124-99 blowout of the Houston Rockets. Corey Maggette and Tony Parker also scored 19 points each, making the case for Houston almost impossible. The Spurs said the division championship was a good feeling, but not all that important when you see the whole picture. “We've had a good regular season and we've positioned ourselves well for the playoffs,” said Maggette, “but the goal for us is winning the championship. We understand we've still got a lot of work to do.” In total, seven players scored in double figures for the Spurs: George Hill scored 11 points, while Larry Hughes and Tiago Splitter added 10 apiece. San Antonio had followed a tough loss in Portland last week with two wins, both by 5 points or less. So it was a relief for coach Gregg Popovich to see his team put together a strong effort.

“We have bigger goals,” said Popovich. “Feels good. It would have been better if we didn't have this little funk that we've been in recently.” The division title was just a byproduct. Duncan shot an outstanding 9-of-10 from the field, to go with nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Parker showed his versatility with five rebounds and six assists, having only one turnover. Maggette shot 7-of-11, including a big array of dunks. The Spurs didn't have any setbacks in the game despite an off night in offense from Manu Ginobili, who had 14 points, in 4-of-14 shots. Down by 11 points in the first quarter, Houston rallied to tie the game at 48 on a dunk by Luis Scola with 6:51 left in the second; Scola had 14 games and 11 rebounds for the Rockets. With the score tied at 53, Parker scored eight points in a 13-2 spurt that gave San Antonio the lead for good at halftime, 66-55, capped by a buzzer-beater trey by Maggette. After a back-and-forth third, San Antonio led 89-77 entering the fourth frame and built a 100-81 lead following a fastbreak dunk by Ginobili, and never looked back again. A new 12-2 run gave the Spurs a 25-point lead at 118-93; they led almost every stat -- assists, turnovers, rebounds, steals, points in the paint, bench points...

But the true key was Ginobili's defensive play on Kevin Martin. Martin averaged 29.6 points in the previous three games between the teams, but this occasion, the Argentinian held him to 2-of-13 from the field, for only nine points. An upset K-Mart said, “It was just a bad game for me,” Martin said. “I can only applaud Manu. I can score whenever I want to score but tonight I couldn't find my swagger. I just need to forget this.” The Rockets fell to the 6th spot in the West and could battle Oklahoma City in the playoffs. But with four of their last six games at home, they could upgrade their seed, as Utah (5th) is only 1.5 games ahead, and has two games against the Los Angeles Lakers and one against the Spurs. But between the 6th and 9th seed, there's three games of difference and anything can happen. “The panic button has been hit,” said Terrence Williams, who had 21 points for Houston. “We've got to win. The urgency is there if we're trying to make the playoffs.” Aaron Brooks played 47 minutes after Kyle Lowry suffered a lower back strain in the second quarter. Brooks had a game-high 25 points and seven assists, but eight turnovers.

Crazy that now it is identical. (Y) Hopefully I can do better, if the bracket stays like this, I'm going against the Hornets for the first round and then either Dallas/Utah.

Both teams have a lot of talent. Let's see what happens here in the postseason, may clash against them in the second round.

The title aspirations article was well written. Hey guess what, Ginobili had his first triple-double in my D. I will post about it soon.

Blow out win over the Rockets. Kick the Lakers and then rest TD. For me, I have many smaller injuries lately and they really killed my flow. (will post about that either in my thread).

So it's better to be cautious and let TD sit out a few.

Keep it rolling, boy. Love this stuff (Y)

I look at the boxscore quite often to see who scored the less and try to get the ball to him... that's why I have a lot of players scoring 10+. :wink:

Thanks man. Houston activated Telfair now to backup Brooks. Lowry is out until the playoffs.

Thanks a lot Hov! As I said lot of times I'm trying to improve my writing. The thing is, I have six games left (Suns, @ Hawks, Kings, Jazz, @ Lakers, @ Suns)... I could rest TD for the other five games, 'cause I'm gonna need him against Los Angeles. I will rest him at least three of those six games. Thought of calling up Cousin and Gist, but the Toros are really close to clinch the D-League title. So I'm gonna call them for the preseason (all along, the idea was getting them into the Spurs team next year).

shadowgrin wrote:Awesome pic of Yao over Duncan and Splitter.

Yao made me scratch my head a couple of times. At least he didn't get close to that quadruple-double like the last time. :evil:

Axel. wrote:Yeah, I don't like it. Especially considering the fact that the Rockets won that game irl. (N)

I guess the Lowry injury was the X-factor. Brooks was exhausted, eight turnovers and Parker killed him in the second half (but check the video, he made some incredible 3s).

Thanks guys. Right now its either Memphis (7th), New Orleans (8th) or Denver (9th, 1.5 games behind). Hopefully it's the Hornets, won all four games against them. I've had some major problems facing the Grizzlies; Mayo, Gay and Randolph always find a way to score and I lost a couple of games, IIRC.

    Weekly Rewind N° 23 • TD to rest three games; Blake out for season and more...
    nba.com/spurs/morningcoffee | April 3rd, 2011

    Image
    SAN ANTONIO -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Spurs fanatics. I have some more tidbits here in the table for us to discuss. I'm doing a weekly report with things that happened around the league, including: signings & waivings; POTW honors; Power Rankings; injury report; All-Star voting and trading rumors. Hope you join the discussion!

    Spurs will rest Tim Duncan until April 8 • San Antonio's Tim Duncan insists he's “good”. But the Spurs don't want to play until he's great. Duncan will sit out for San Antonio's next three contests to rest his body. Duncan insists he is in good condition to play, but the Spurs' coaching staff is extra cautious and don't want him to get injured when there's only so little time until the postseason. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich said today in a press conference that, in addition to some body rest, Tim also felt a little pain in his ankle yesterday during a team scrimmage. However, “it's nothing he couldn't play through”, the coach said. Then he assured, “if this were the playoffs, he would be on the field.” Duncan did not take part in this morning's shootaround, opting to lift weights in the AT&T Center's gymnasium, while all his teammates went through preparations for tonight's game against the Phoenix Suns (34-41).

    Earlier, Popovich added Duncan would be a game-time decision, but it seemed both sides had agreed on a decision a long time before. “This is an opportune time for him to get some rest, I'd say,” commented Manu Ginobili. “Tim wants to play. He doesn't like sitting, but this is the right time for him to rest his body and he will be 100% when the playoffs come.” San Antonio has a two-game lead over the Los Angeles Lakers for the best record in the West, but the Miami Heat hold a one-game advantage over the Spurs for the league's best mark. Popovich said his team's seeding for the playoffs is not a factor in any decisions. “If I was concerned about that, it would be different. I would've said, 'Tape Tim up for the Suns'. His body has to be feeling the effects from playing all those games,” he said. “This group is capable of winning games without him.” The Spurs placed Duncan in the inactive list and activated guard Chris Quinn for the next three games. Tiago Splitter will take Duncan's place in the team's starting lineup.

    Players of the Week • The Chicago Bulls' Derrick Rose and the Sacramento Kings' Tyreke Evans today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played March 27 - April 2. Rose and the Bulls had an outstanding 4-0 week -- with wins over Philadelphia, Minnesota, Detroit and Toronto. In the victory over the 76ers, Derrick scored 42 points and dished 13 assists and five steals, and then closed the week, with 34 and 8 against the Raptors. He finished the week with averages of 34.2 points, 8.0 assists and 3.0 steals. Sacramento's Evans averaged 23.0 points along with 6.0 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 4.0 steals, as the Kings posted an excellent 3-1 week -- with two wins over Denver and one over Phoenix, and a loss at Philadelphia. Tyreke averaged 19.6 points, 7.0 boards and 7.0 assists in the three victories.

    Power RankingsBest teams of the week? San Antonio (4-0), Chicago (4-0), Miami (3-1), Dallas (3-1), Sacramento (3-1), Orlando (2-0). The worst? Minnesota (0-4), Cleveland (1-3), Golden State (1-3), Milwaukee (1-3), Phoenix (1-3), Portland (1-3). High jumps -- Sacramento (+6), Chicago (+2), Utah (+2), Charlotte (+2), Toronto (+2), San Antonio (+1), Indiana (+1). Free falls -- Minnesota (-4), Phoenix (-3), Detroit (-2), Portland (-2), Cleveland (-1), Oklahoma City (-1), LA Lakers (-1). Check the power rankings (Top 7) here -- Heat, Lakers, Spurs, Magic, Celtics, Thunder and Bulls all repeat the Super Seven, with the Lakers now in the 3rd spot in the Spurs up to the 2nd, after a 4-0 week.

    Injury report • Sorted by injuries with most duration, here you can check the full injury report. Charlotte Bobcats bigman Tyrus Thomas has been diagnosed with a torn meniscus in his right knee, the Bobcats announced today. Thomas, who averaged career-highs of 12.1 points and 7.3 rebounds with Charlotte this season, will undergo arthroscopic surgery tomorrow. Los Angeles Clippers rookie Blake Griffin will miss the remaining five games of the season with a broken left hand. Griffin, a former 1st overall pick out of Oklahoma, averaged 12.5 points this season, in 61 games, to go along with 9.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists on .473% shooting from the field.

Splitter, highflyer Maggette lead TD-less Spurs over Phoenix
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (PHX :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, April 3 -- You could see George Gervin in the bleachers. In a dunk contest, there's no doubt he'd give Corey Maggette a perfect 10. And give the San Antonio Spurs some credit: the game was supposed to be more contested, as Tim Duncan was resting in the Spurs' inactive list. But Maggette and Tiago Splitter pulled off a huge win over the Phoenix Suns. The high-flying Maggette scored 16 points, eight in each half and the Spurs won the battle 113-102. “It gets everybody going, it gets the crowd going,” said Maggette, a former NBA dunk contest participant in 2001, who had the rim rockin' with six dunks on Suns defenders and the sellout crowd in the AT&T Center on its feet. After losing to Portland last week, the Spurs seemed to take out all their frustrations with this win, their 5th in a row. “That's what we needed: easy baskets. My heart was racing, I was very happy. I wanted to give the fans something to cheer about,” added Maggette. That he did. He saved his best dunk for last. In the fourth quarter, after Hedo Turkoglu threw the ball away, Tony Parker passed off to Maggette, breaking down the left wing. He took off, like a spaceship, and slammed it through over Steve Nash and Channing Frye (don't forget to check the video).

The Spurs had a 25-16 advantage in the first quarter, but Phoenix recovered with a 12-2 run in the second quarter to lead at halftime, 53-48. But San Antonio took control of the ship in the third quarter, outscoring the Suns 29-18, limiting them to 29 percent shooting (7-of-24). With the crowd still buzzing from his jaw-dropping dunk, Maggette pulled up behind the arc and hit a 3-pointer that gave the Spurs a 100-83 lead. He backpedaled all the way down the court and slapped hands with the Spurs fans on the baseline. But it was a rough night for Manu Ginobili, who shot 3-for-13 from the floor, for eight points. “I had no lift tonight,” said Ginobili. “I missed some treys, but I also missed some layups that I usually make. I'm still frustrated.” Larry Hughes, Tony Parker and Matt Bonner made up for the Argentinian with 13 points each. Bonner dropped 3 bombs from beyond the arc. The Spurs now face the Atlanta Hawks this Tuesday; Atlanta won back in December in their previous matchup. “It's going to be very electric when we face the Hawks,” said Splitter. “We're looking forward to it.” Splitter was a force on the inside and had a game-high 20 points for San Antonio, in 9-of-10 shooting. The Spurs won the paint battle, 66-30, thanks to Splitter, Maggette and DeJuan Blair's inside play.

Turkoglu led Phoenix with 19 points but San Antonio had him kneeling over, looking totally gassed, by the end of the game. “You could tell they wanted it more in the second half,” said Phoenix's Jason Richardson, who scored 18 points, while Nash had 17 and nine assists for the Suns. Robin Lopez and Josh Childress contributed with 12 and 11 points, respectively. “I thought our energy in the first half was pretty good, and I thought we slept through the second half,” said Suns coach Alvin Gentry. Besides losing the game, the Suns suffered a big loss in the process. Forward Hakim Warrick could be out for a while after he broke his left wrist in a nasty collision with Splitter late in the third quarter. That happened when Warrick, who had six points and six rebounds, tried to block a shot by Splitter. Both players crashed to the court, but while Tiago quickly popped up, Warrick stayed down clutching his wrist. “They told me I'm going to be out for a while,” said Warrick. He's scheduled for an MRI tomorrow, but even so, he won't play again this season. The odds for the Suns making the playoffs are very slim, as they stand in the 12th seed in the West with only five games left.
