But tell me how they did it... the winning bracket will get a prize, which I haven't decided yet

Last hours to post brackets, I will post Sweet Sixteen tomorrow.

Argh, you were lacking a player who takes the ball and hammers 30+ on the Blazers. Sometimes I feel like you don't play selfish enough but this also has to do with your stacked team. If you had my Sonics you'd loose by sharing the ball so much since there are maybe three guys who can actually score.

All in all, an unnecessary loss. Timmy needs to step up and go for 20/10/3 in the next few games so that you stay on top.

I'm still too lazy to fill in the bracket ;) Maybe you could write me when's the last minute to post, then I'm gonna do it.

River Walk Chronicles ♦ NCAA Tournament (Sweet Sixteen)

    West Region
    (1) Texas 73 vs. (8) Kansas State 64
Game Info | Boxscores (Texas - Kansas State)

The Kansas State Wildcats got off to a terrible start, and a quick exit in the NCAA Tournament in a 73-64 loss to the Texas Longhorns, who were led by Axel Gomez and his usual unstoppable attack -- the eighth-seeded Wildcats were totally overmatched by Gomez and Jai Lucas. They surrendered 23 points in a key second quarter were toyed with by the Longhorns in the second half. “They're on a whole other level with their chemistry. They're all on the same page and more focused,” said Wildcats guard Dennis Clemente, who was Kansas State's best player with 12 points, five boards and six assists. “They're the best team in the league right now. They knock down shots that you can't do anything about.” Texas pounced on a demoralized team, racing to a 41-28 at halftime. Kansas State (kind of) fought back in third quarter as Texas got lazy and cut a 18-point deficit into a 5-point, early in the fourth quarter.

But Gomez carried the team over his shoulders and killed all of the Wildcats' hopes of the year's biggest upset; Gomez scored a game-best 19 points to go with seven rebounds, four dimes and two blocks, while Lucas added 13 points. “It was a tough game for us,” Lucas said. “The Wildcats are a nice team and we knew that they weren't going to lay down. We made a run and then they would match it, but we were just too much in the end for them.” Despite the teams shooting a combined 53 percent from the charity stripe (17-of-32), it was a thrilling contest. With the Wildcats scoring 58 of their 64 points in the paint, the Longhorns will have to work on their defense for the coming rounds. Justin Mason and Clint Chapman contributed with 12 points apiece for Texas, but Chapman suffered a dislocated finger and will miss the Elite Eight's clash against Ohio State.

    (4) Ohio State 77 vs. (5) Connecticut 57
Game Info | Boxscores (Ohio State - Connecticut) •

Julian Martin got Ohio State's NCAA tourney off to a flying beginning. Martin made 8-of-12 shots en route to a game-best 19 points as the Buckeyes opened their NCAA Tournament quest with a 77-57 victory against the Connecticut Huskies. After the first quarter, you couldn't call the game a “contest” anymore. It was a back and forth game, but a 14-2 run by Ohio State in the second period was enough. Martin and William Buford scored 12 of those 14 points, as Buford scored 17 points and formed a great duo with the former NLSC Academy member. Before intermission, the Buckeyes took a 45-30 lead and then opened the second half on a quick 6-0 run to take a 51-30 advantage. Martin also had six rebounds, three assists and three steals. “I think it's starting to become contagious amongst the whole team,” said Buford of Martin. “It really starts with Julian, he goes out there and gets everybody involved. It was a great win for us and now we gotta focus on Texas.”

Ohio State shot 42 percent (31-of-73) from the field, including a key 9-of-27 from 3-point land. Kemba Walker scored 16 points and Jamal Coombs-McDaniel added 10 for the Huskies, who just in their most important game, suffered the worst Zee Otoo of the season: 2 points, only 1 shot, and seven rebounds. He never took part in Connecticut's offense and was a real frustration for his team. “The thing that devastated me the most today was Zee's night,” said Huskies coach Jim Calhoun. “He knows, I know, everybody on the team knows that he's much better than that. Anyway, we are not talented enough that we can just throw a couple-three guys out there and they can take over a ball game. We collectively have to be on the same page to get things done and that's where the focus will be next year.” Buckeyes' David Lighty suffered shin splints in the third quarter and is likely to miss the game against Texas.

    (3) Georgia Tech 73 vs. (6) North Carolina 69
Game Info | Boxscores (Georgia Tech - North Carolina) •

Zach Peacock was mildly surprised in the beginning of the second period, with Georgia Tech trailing by only 10 points. “We still had a chance,” Peacock said. Where there's a trio like Peacock, Brad Sheehan and Martti Must, there's a way. In what was this round's closest game, Peacock scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half and the Yellow Jackets rallied to beat the North Carolina Tar Heels, 73-69. At halftime, Peacock was 1-for-9 from the field, but then connected on 5-of-9 in the second half during the frantic comeback. Just in time for his team, who got the ticket for this year's Elite Eight. Sheehan scored 13 points and nine rebounds, and Must added 10 and seven, with the Estonian playing great defense on North Carolina's Leo Lai, who only scored 6 points, product of two shots from 3-point territory.

“Sure, you feel confident with a 10-point lead,” said Lai, “But you can't rest on the laurels. You can never count out a team with these three players. Martti did a great job when he had to play defense on me.” Iman Shumpert added 10 points for the Yellow Jackets, who outrebounded the Tar Heels 43-35 and also went 22-for-30 from the foul line, including a 8-for-10 effort in the second half. Marcus Ginyard scored 17 points, six rebounds and five assists for North Carolina, which also got 13 from John Henson and 10 from Dexter Strickland. “Did you see Zach and Brad today?” said Must. “Both are great players who led us today. Even when they are a little sluggish in the first half, they are going to finish with a bang.”

    (2) Kentucky 82 vs. (7) Syracuse 61
Game Info | Boxscores (Kentucky - Syracuse) •

The Kentucky Wildcats had the stroke from deep -- something the Syracuse Orange lacked the entire night. Darnell Dodson had 28 points and four rebounds and Josh Harrellson scored 15 points and seven rebounds as Kentucky set a season-high in 3-point percentage (9-of-17, 52 percent) en route to a 82-51 victory over Syracuse. The Wildcats could do no wrong from 3-point land as the trio of Dodson, Harrellson and backup Jon Hood combined to connect on those nine treys. “”It is always nice to shoot a high percentage, but I think we have to understand why,” Dodson said. “We were running the floor and really playing unselfish,” commented Jeff Williams, who added 12 points and seven assists for Kentucky.

The Wildcats held a 12-point advantage entering the second quarter and pulled away for good a dunk by Williams capped a 15-4 surge that gave them a commanding 50-25 edge at halftime. Syracuse then trailed by 31 points midway the third period and never answered thereafter. “It seemed like everything they threw up went in, they had a lot of open looks, we just didn't contest them well and we paid the price,” said bigman Arinze Onuaku, who led the Orange with 11 points. “When teams are shooting like that, its tough.” Syracuse was 0-of-12 from 3-point range. Onuaku was the only player from Syracuse scoring in double figures, as Scoop Jardine posted 9 points and Kris Joseph and Mookie Jones contributed with 8 apiece. Chris Hova again showed his superb all-around play -- 4 points, 6 boards, 5 assists, 4 steals -- but Williams played great defense when Hova was about to shoot.

    East Region
    (1) Duke 89 vs. (8) Tennessee 57
Game Info | Boxscores (Duke - Tennessee) •

Although he missed 10 games with a shoulder injury, Jon Scheyer appears to be fully ready for the coming drive. Scheyer scored 18 points and seven assists to lead the Duke Blue Devils to an easy 89-57 victory over the Tennessee Volunteers. Duke had the best record of the East Region at 23-6 and never trailed tonight, breaking the contest open when Scheyer and Will Sit scored all the points in a 12-2 second-period run for a 41-29 lead at the half. “I'm feeling good right now,” said Scheyer. “I and the team have to stay focused down the stretch to repeat this year.” Kyle Singler added 15 points, seven boards and six assists and Sit contributed with 13 and eight boards for the Blue Devils, who shot 52 percent from the floor (33-of-63) for their largest victory margin of the season.

“To play against the Volunteers and win by 30, this is a huge win for us,” added Sit. Just in the worst time, Tennessee suffered its worst loss of the season and also set a season low in points, shooting 31 percent (21-of-67) from the field, and their bench was outscored, 34-21. “When you can't score and you can't stop people, there's no way you can come back from a 25-point deficit,” said Volunteers guard Tyler Smith, who led the team with 14 points, five rebounds and five dishes. Duke then outscored Tennessee, 21-6 for the final score. JP Prince scored eight points while Bobby Maze and Emmanuel Negedu had six points apiece for the losing team. “Today was an embarassment, flat-out embarrassing,” Negedu said. “We didn't have any passion or energy. They came out and jumped on and we didn't respond. It was a perfect win for them.”

    (4) Georgetown 66 vs. (5) Baylor 80
Game Info | Boxscores (Georgetown - Baylor) •

Willie Lewis knew his tender hamstring would limit him, so Josh Lomers took a huge load off Baylor's leading point guard. Lewis and Lomers shot the Baylor Bears right into the Elite Eight, capping this round's only upset with a memorable performance. Lewis willed his team on one good leg, shaking off a strained hamstring to score only five points but a game-high 13 assists and Lomers scored a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds. “We posted a great game tonight and that's the best thing about it. We did it as a team,” Lewis said. “I'm so proud of my teammates and proud to be a part of this squad.” Bears coach Scott Drew added, “This is a pretty special place to be right now.”

The key was the Bears holding Georgetown's Hollis Thompson to four points and 2-for-10 shooting, after he averaged 18.7 points per game in the regular season. Austin Freeman scored a game-best 24 points and Jesrie Calimbas had 15, eight boards and six assists for Georgetown, who had high hopes of going deep in the NCAA Tournament after a solid 21-8 regular-season showing. “We were down by eight points at halftime,” said Calimbas, “It was still a contest and there was a chance to come back. But we came out and they kept a great defense on us. This is a very disappointing end for us.” The Bears shot 47 percent from the field, had 24 assists on 33 field goals, had less turnovers, less team fouls, won the glass battle 44-30, and dominated the paint 66-10. No discussion on who deserved to advance. “We wanted to be aggressive,” said Lomers. “Willie came out and told me he wasn't feeling as good as before, and he wanted me to carry us. I wanted to stay focused, just bring my energy with my play.”

    (3) Villanova 84 vs. (6) Kansas 57
Game Info | Boxscores (Villanova - Kansas) •

It took Corey Stokes, Kevin Johnson and the Villanova Wildcats about three minutes to get going. Then the Kansas Jayhawks got in serious trouble. Stokes scored 23 points and Johnson showed his versatility as the Wildcats opened a 21-point lead at halftime and cruised to a 84-57 rout. Kansas recorded the game's first five points before Villanova countered with a 20-5 run. The Wildcats shot 70 percent in the first quarter (14-of-20) and connecting on 10 of their first 12 attempts. “When we're shooting the ball and we're passing the ball, it's really hard to guard us,” Stokes said. “I think we also had a good idea of how they were going to defend, looking at some of their games. We got a lot of good looks because we were aware of that.”

Taylor King scored 14 points and Corey Fisher had 12 for the Wildcats, who shot 47 percent (33-of-69) and held the Jayhawks to 35 percent (21-of-59). Villanova held a 66-41 lead entering the fourth period, before taking their biggest advantage at 79-49 at the mid of it. “That's a very good team out there,” Kansas' Brady Morningstar said. “They can contend for the championship. They were very sharp and very confident and they have a lot of weapons.” Villanova was also sharp from the arc, nailing 9-of-24 three-pointers while Kansas connected on just 4-of-19. “It came down to energy,” said Villanova's Johnson, who added 6 points, four rebounds and five assists. “We played such good defense, that's why we were able to run as we did. Hopefully we'll continue like this throughout the tournament.”

    (2) Michigan State 100 vs. (7) Purdue 70
Game Info | Boxscores (Michigan State - Purdue) •

It was a thrilling contest in the first half, but in the second, Dolph Lundgren Jr. and the Michigan State Spartans showed why they might win it all this season. The game had a 17-17 tie entering the second quarter, but then the Spartans scored the second period's first 10 points and a 17-4 run in the fourth quarter clinched the ticket to the Elite Eight, as Lundgren collected 22 points and Raymar Morgan added 17, handing the Purdue Boilermakers a 100-70 loss. “We're trying to be consistent. This is a win that we needed to progress,” Lundgren said. “The defensive effort helped us and we realized that we can put in a 48-minute effort. It was a big win for us and hopefully we can keep it up for the next, and final month of the season.” In the second half, Lundgren was assisted from Kalin Lucas and Chris Allen to throw down thunderous dunks that enthused the crowd.

Purdue was led by Robbie Hummel, who had 17 points, and center JaJuan Johnson finished with 12 points. “They played a great game. It was a nice, back and forth contest in the first half, but we got murdered in the second half,” Hummel said. “We gave up too many easy shots and second shots.” The Boilermakers allowed 100 points for the first time this year. “They had 90 points with five minutes to go,” added Johnson. “We haven't given up that many all season. They are a terrific, well-coached team.” Purdue fought within five points on several occasions during the first two frames of the game, but never tied it again. “They played a great overall game,” said guard E'Twuan Moore, who contributed with 10 points. “Something unusual happened tonight, we got outhustled.” The Spartans won the boards, 40-36 and also won in the paint, 28-18.

I'm not really selfish, I try to share the ball a lot between my four guys (TP-Manu-Maggs-TD). Hopefully Tim can step up a little more for the playoffs. I posted the first round but you can still predict the other rounds, the prize will most likely be the draft order.

Weekly Rewind N° 22 • Spurs waive Swift, re-sign Quinn; Jazz lose Iverson and more...
    nba.com/spurs/morningcoffee | March 27th, 2011

    Image
SAN ANTONIO -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Spurs fanatics. I have some more tidbits here in the table for us to discuss. I'm doing a weekly report with things that happened around the league, including: signings & waivings; POTW honors; Power Rankings; injury report; All-Star voting and trading rumors. Hope you join the discussion!

Spurs make two quick roster moves • San Antonio Spurs general manager R.C. Buford today announced that the team has waived forward Stromile Swift. The 6-10, 220-pound bigman appeared in 4 games for the Spurs, averaging 3.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 0.7 blocks in 14.8 minutes. The Spurs originally signed Swift as a free agent on December 24th, 2010. “Stromile is a player who embodied all of those intangible qualities that you would want in a veteran,” Buford said. “The professionalism that he brought to this team, both on and off the court, makes this a tough decision.”

Buford also announced the Spurs signed guard Chris Quinn for the remainder of the season. Quinn, 6-2, 175, was signed by San Antonio on February 26 to a 10-day contract as a insurance backup, after Tony Parker was suspended by the league. He appeared in those three games for the team, averaging only 2.7 points per game but surprising everyone with his court vision, at 6.7 assists per game in only 14.0 minutes per game. “Chris surprised everyone on the organization,” said Buford, “Pop gave him only a couple of opportunities because Tony came back, but we feel he has a bright future in the league and we want him to share it with us.”

Players of the Week • The Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant and the Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard today were named the Western and Eastern Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played March 20 - 26. Bryant and the Lakers had a perfect 3-0 week -- with victories over Portland, Phoenix and the Clippers. In the victory over the Blazers, Kobe scored 33 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and five steals, and then posted a triple-double of 25 points, 13 boards and 10 dishes in the win over the Suns. To close the week, he exploded for 55 and seven assists against the Clips. He finished the week with averages of 37.6 points, 8.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists. Magic's Howard averaged 26.3 points along with 14.6 rebounds and 3.3 rejections, as Orlando posted a 2-1 week -- with wins over Cleveland and New Jersey, and a last-minute loss to the Knicks. Dwight has a nine-game double-double streak going on, with a 31 & 13 against the Cavaliers, 31 and 16 at New York, and then a little more quiet, 17 and 15 versus the Nets.

Power RankingsBest teams of the week? LA Lakers (3-0), Miami (2-0), Chicago (3-1), Atlanta (3-1), San Antonio (2-1), Boston (2-1), Orlando (2-1), Oklahoma City (2-1). The worst? Detroit (0-4), Sacramento (0-4), Denver (0-3), Charlotte (0-3), LA Clippers (1-3), Golden State (1-3), Toronto (1-4). High jumps -- Indiana (+5), Atlanta (+4), New Jersey (+3), Chicago (+2), Phoenix (+2), Minnesota (+1), Oklahoma City (+1), Golden State (+1). Free falls -- Sacramento (-7), Utah (-5), LA Clippers (-2), New York (-2), Denver (-2), Washington (-1), Charlotte (-1). Check the power rankings (Top 7) here -- Heat, Lakers, Spurs, Magic and Celtics repeat the Top 5 while the Thunder and Bulls join them for the Top 7.

Injury report • Sorted by injuries with most duration, here you can check the full injury report. Utah Jazz guard Allen Iverson will likely miss the remainder of the season with a broken finger that will require surgery. Iverson fractured his right little finger during Utah's 100-91 win over Dallas yesterday; team head coach Jerry Sloan said Allen will have an operation today and that he will be sidelined for at least a month, making his comeback for the playoffs unlikely. Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry also left the game against the Jazz because of a strained right hamstring. Terry was 1-of-11 from the field before leaving the contest.

Spurs rally in second half, defeat Grizzlies behind Manu's triple-double and Duncan, Parker contributions
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (SAS :: MEM)

MEMPHIS, March 27 -- Manu Ginobili's second triple-double of the season could not have come at a better time for San Antonio. Manu scored 15 points, to go with 11 rebounds and 11 assists, as the Spurs erased a 13-point deficit in the beginning of the third quarter to win 107-106 over the Memphis Grizzlies. “It was a great game,” said the Argentinian. “They kicked our butt in the second quarter, but we turned it up after that. The second half was ours.” In the last four minutes of the game, Manu had a 3-pointer, two layups and four assists. A free throw with only 1 minute left gave San Antonio a 105-104 lead, but O.J. Mayo, who seems to be the Spurs' nightmare everytime this teams collide, answered with a pull-up jumper. Manu then assisted Tim Duncan into the left low post and Mr. Fundamental didn't disappoint to clinch the win. The Spurs, who won the inside battle 58-34 and outrebounded Memphis, 39-29, survived when Mayo missed a potential buzzer-beater, a tough leaning jumper just before the horn.

Mayo reached the 33-point plateau for the third time in Memphis' last four games, making 11-of-17 shots, including 5-of-8 from 3-point land. Rudy Gay added 25 points, in 10-of-14 shooting, as the only two Grizzlies to constantly put a threat on San Antonio. The rest of the starters (Nate Robinson, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol) combined for only 21 points. “Losing on our homecourt hurts a lot more than any other games,” said Randolph, the only other Grizz to score in double figures, with 12 points. “We played hard tonight, but when you let a 13-point lead slip away, it's tough.” The Grizzlies outscored the Spurs 12-2 over the final three minutes of the first half, turning a 21-21 tie in the first quarter into a 60-50 halftime lead. They led by 13 early in the third, but San Antonio had a 18-6 run to tie the game at 80. Consecutive baskets by rookie Xavier Henry made it 84-80 to close the third frame. “We had a double-digit lead and they chipped away at it,” said Michael Conley, who added 9 points and 9 assists off the bench for the Grizzlies. “It's hard to lose like this.”

But, to start the final quarter, Ginobili answered with a jumper and Corey Maggette followed with a layup, to tie again, at 84. Duncan then blocked an up-and-under by Gasol, forcing a shot-clock violation. Duncan was very important for San Antonio's cause, with 20 points and 12 rebounds. The Spurs went inside most of the fourth, with Duncan and Tiago Splitter, and with five minutes left in the contest, a 3-point play by Tony Parker gave them their first lead since the opening quarter at 95-93. “We allowed them to take the first punch, and we weren't as aggressive as we should have been,” said Parker, who scored 13 of his 19 points in the first quarter. “We were all encouraged in the second half to get aggressive.” A 3-pointer by Maggette, who finished the night with 13 points, made it 98-93 and then the Spurs held for the victory. Off the bench, Splitter and Larry Hughes scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Spurs. “We love this challenges, man,” said Hughes. “We love any time we can get a whole arena against us and we can start hearing the crowd boo us. On those situations, we thrive.”

Man, my team just sucks so much, even Chris Hov can't lift Syracuse. You didn't need Swift I guess. He's a cancer anyway. Nice triple-double by Manu, by the way, I changed his gameplay in my D to what you wanted, will inform you soon how it is working ;)

I might predict the Final Four.

You are a lock for a first round pick, anyway. (Y) Swift I just signed him for a couple of injuries I had, he was dying in the IR. Manu I was 8-4-4 in the first half, so I went for the triple-double. :)

A new game against the Blazers now (hopefully I can get revenge) and then I'll post the Elite Eight results, so if anyone wants to post a bracket, go ahead.

Man, you're struggling. Hopefully, the struggle doesn't carry to the playoffs, where it might kill you.

Spurs struggling down the stretch; survive scare by Portland with Tim & Tony statlines
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (POR :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, March 28 -- Tony Parker managed to sit for just nine minutes. For Portland, Brandon Roy couldn't remember the last time he played so many: 41. Parker again catched fire early, scoring 13 of his 17 points in the first half as the San Antonio Spurs survived in the fourth to beat the Trail Blazers, 103-98. Parker added 11 assists and Tim Duncan scored 17 as well, to go with 14 rebounds. “It wasn't exciting at all,” said Parker. “We were up by 19 and we never felt like we were going to lose. But in the fourth they were on fire. We almost lose an incredible game.” Parker scored a three-point play to give the Spurs their biggest lead at 41-22 in the first minutes of the second quarter. Parker was 6-of-7 from the field and lately, he has been one of the best players on the team, rebounding from some bad performances before the All-Star break. The Frenchman had 19 points in a 107-106 win over Memphis.

“Tony's been on a roll, and once Tim got going, it was tough to get the lead,” said Roy, who scored a game-best 26 points and also had 10 assists. Coach Nate McMillan added, “They were penetrating and getting to the free throw line constantly. I thought that was the difference, why we couldn't bounce back from that double-digit deficit.” The Trail Blazers got within 101-98 on a 3-pointer by Nicolas Batum with 23 seconds left -- Batum posted 21 points for Portland. “We couldn't come up with the big plays in the final minutes,” said Batum. Batum and Roy scored Portland's first 14 points of the game, with seven points apiece, in what was a clue of how Portland's offense would go through the whole night. The Spurs were leading by 18 entering the fourth quarter, 80-62, but the Blazers rallied with a 14-2 run; San Antonio was up in the score at 82-76. Gregg Popovich's team managed to get a new double-digit lead when Manu Ginobili went coast-to-coast for a layup and a 90-80 lead. But Roy made a pair of free throws to get Portland within 98-94. Corey Maggette and Parker then scored to solidify the victory.

With this win, San Antonio hold a 1.5-game lead over the Los Angeles Lakers for first place in the West. Ginobili and Maggette finished the contest with 16 and 11 points, respectively, for the Spurs, while Drew Gooden and Tiago Splitter provided a spark off the bench with nine points and seven rebounds each. For the Blazers, Greg Oden played 30 minutes off the bench, scoring 14 points and four rebounds. “I haven't played half-and-hour in a long time,” said Oden. “I'm not hiding anything from anybody, I haven't been 100 percent for a while, but I'm going to give it what I've got.” A former 1st overall pick, Oden has been hampered by knee problems almost his whole career, missing the whole 2007-08 season and 61 games in 2009-10, just to name a few black spots. Both teams shot 52 percent (also both 39-of-75), but Portland was better from the arc at 5-of-11. Two keys for San Antonio's survival were the defense on LaMarcus Aldridge (8 points and four rebounds; he had 20 and seven in a matchup last week), and their inside scoring, 64-40.

Yes it's a struggle lately. I am winning, but it happened again -- almost losing a 19-point lead. Gotta work on that... :x

As you guys are noticing, the recaps are coming slower and slower lately, with the sports journalism school starting and I'm also receiving too many homework :| So I'm gonna post this last 8 games and the playoffs, and then for the coming season expect weekly recaps and surely, no videos, but perhaps more pics.
