Johnson, Villanova extend winning streak to 8 with win over Hova, Syracuse; inch closer to Sweet Sixteen
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (Syracuse :: Villanova)

VILLANOVA, March 5 -- The Villanova Wildcats' eighth consecutive victory was the picture of all-around play. Corey Stokes had 16 points and five rebounds and Reggie Redding added 15, to go with six rebounds and seven assists, as the Wildcats extended winning streak by easing to a 80-57 victory over the Syracuse Orange. Villanova shot 41 percent from the field, had 28 assists on 36 field goals and outrebounded Syracuse 55-46. “It's fun to play basketball when the ball is moving side to side so well,” Stokes said. “That's what you see from this team consistently, night in and night out.” The only bad news for the Wildcats came in the form of Taylor King, who shot 4-of-14 for only eight points and will need to work on his shooting accuracy for the Sweet Sixteen round. Former NLSC Academy member Kevin Johnson contributed with 12 points, five assists and a season-high nine rebounds. The Wildcats have won 17 of their last 18 games, improving to a huge 17-4 record.

“Villanova is good, they try to do things the right way,” Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said. “They have so many weapons, it's like, pick your poison.” 12 points and 13 rebounds by Arinze Onuaku and 10 points by Kris Joseph paced Syracuse, as the only two Orange players scoring in double figures. Chris Hova shot 1-of-9, including 0-of-7 from 3-point territory, but had seven rebounds and nine assists. Syracuse trailed 12-2 in the first quarter, but a 14-4 run tied the game at 16. Redding scored 10 of his 15 points in a 15-2 run for Villanova to end the first half, pushing their lead to 48-27, and then opened the third quarter with a quick 8-0 spurt capped by a dunk by Mouphtaou Yarou for a 56-27 lead and never looked back again. Syracuse didn't get any closer than 20 points after that run. “It's a tough time for us right now. More than anything, I'd say we are mentally exhausted. We have to grow and learn to push through this losed games,” Hova said. “But we know that the Sweet Sixteen is a complete different tournament, so we gotta work for that. We're really close to clinch a spot.”

    Weekly Rewind N° 19 • Boykins to leave Milwaukee, two coaches fired and more...
    nba.com/spurs/morningcoffee | March 6th, 2011

    Image
    SAN ANTONIO -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Spurs fanatics. I have some more tidbits here in the table for us to discuss. I'm doing a weekly report with things that happened around the league, including: signings & waivings; POTW honors; Power Rankings; injury report; All-Star voting and trading rumors. Hope you join the discussion!

    Earl Boykins will be moving on to a new team • In an expected decision, Milwaukee Bucks guard Earl Boykins plans to play out the final year of his contract this season and enter free agency instead of re-signing with the Bucks. Boykins plans to become an unrestricted free agent after the season -- he would join a class of free agents also expected to include Zach Randolph, Vince Carter, Caron Butler and Tayshaun Prince, just to name a few. Milwaukee won 46 games and finished sixth in the Eastern Conference last season before falling in the first round of the playoffs to the Atlanta Hawks. Boykins and the Bucks hold a 27-34 record at this point, and play the Boston Celtics today. “I think this team has grown a lot over the past few years,” Boykins said, “But they will have to continue their growth without me. The organization promised me some things back in June and they didn't deliver. I'm thankful for the opportunity, but it's not paying dividends for me.”

    Players of the Week • The Miami Heat's LeBron James and the Oklahoma City Thunder's Kevin Durant today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played February 27 - March 5. James and the Heat had a 2-1 week -- with wins over New York and Orlando and a loss at San Antonio. In the victory over the Knicks, James showed his all-around play posting 27 points, eight boards, eight assists, three steals and three blocks. In the win over the Magic, he scored 28 points and 14 rebounds, shooting 10-of-15 from the field. And in the loss to the Spurs, he notched in 30 points and seven steals. He finished the week with averages of 28.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 5.6 assists. Oklahoma City's Durant averaged 36.3 points along with 9.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists, as the Thunder posted a perfect 3-0 week -- with wins over Indiana, Atlanta and a huge victory over the LA Lakers. Durantula scored 31 points and 11 rebounds to beat Los Angeles, then 42 points, nine boards and five assists in a victory over the Pacers and finished the week with 36 points and nine rebounds against the Hawks.

    Power RankingsBest teams of the week? Oklahoma City (3-0), San Antonio (3-1), Houston (3-1), Orlando (3-1), Miami (2-1), Boston (2-1), Chicago (2-1), LA Lakers (2-1). The worst? LA Clippers (0-3), Toronto (1-3), Golden State (1-3), Charlotte (1-3), Cleveland (1-2), New Jersey (1-2). High jumps -- Houston (+4), Indiana (+4), Portland (+4), Sacramento (+4), Utah (+3), Minnesota (+2). Free falls -- Philadelphia (-4), Milwaukee (-4), Atlanta (-3), Toronto (-2), Denver (-2), New York (-2), Memphis (-2). Check the power rankings (Top 7) here -- the Heat took the 1st spot again and the Spurs took the 3rd.

    Toronto fires Jay Triano, hires Ronald Stafford • The Toronto Raptors fired coach Jay Triano, several hours after they lose a game against the New Jersey Nets. Though Triano's departure has been widely expected while Toronto lost five of their last six matches and have the fourth worst record in the whole league, several players in the Raptors roster claimed they were surprised when Triano showed up at their morning team meeting in the Air Canada Center not wearing his training gear. “He was the hardest worker on this team,” Raps guard Leandro Barbosa said. “It's always tough when a coach loses his job. He came in every night and had us prepared.” The Raptors hired Ronald Stafford as Triano's replacement; Stafford is a former North Carolina Tar Heels assistant coach, who helped head coach Roy Williams for the past three years.

    After only nine months, Del Negro fired by the ClippersVinny Del Negro was fired today as coach of the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday after having a league-worst 17-46 record. Theo Morris, who is a former assistant coach for the Purdue Boilermakers in the NCAA, will replace Del Negro. Del Negro was hired in July 2010 and only lasted nine months in Los Angeles; the firing was first reported by the Los Angeles Times on its website. “After deep consideration, we have made a difficult decision regarding coach Del Negro's contract,” Clippers GM Neil Olshey said in a statement. “We're grateful for his contributions over the last year and we want to wish him the very best. We need to move in different paths.” Del Negro commented, “I'm just going to take some time and go away and clear my head. I just want to get away of all this for some time.”

Duncan, Parker spark Spurs to 5th win in 6 games; defeat Kobe, Lakers with perfect second half
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (LAL :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, March 6 -- The San Antonio Spurs' confidence and enthusiasm impressed LA Lakers coach Phil Jackson... he wished he'd seen some of the same from his own squad. Tony Parker had 15 points and added six assists and three rebounds to help San Antonio beat the West-leading Lakers, 101-90. “I told the guys, if this is a test, then you have to see how you respond to them,” Jackson said. “I think I give us a C.” San Antonio won their fifth game in the last six, and their average margin in those five triumphs is 13.4 points. “Another game where most of our starters must play and our young guys must be patient,” said Parker. “But I gave them some minutes in the second half. Thank the starters they got a nice lead.” How lopsided was this one? San Antonio led by double digits throughout almost the entire second half and seven Spurs scored in double figures, shooting 45 percent from the field. “We shot well but had only 16 assists... a sign we're not moving the ball very well,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “We got the ball to the open guy 16 times, but the individual skills of our players won.” San Antonio's reserves outscored the Lakers's, 38-20, led by Tiago Splitter's 12 points and Larry Hughes' 10. “Tiago, that's what he does,” Manu Ginobili said. “He comes in the court, makes a huge impact and we feed off of him.”

The Spurs used a 15-6 run at the start of the third quarter to take the lead for good: a 11-point advantage, led by Ginobili, who had nine points in the spurt but shot 6-of-17 for 14 points. Kobe Bryant then scored six points in a 8-0 run for the Lakers, to cut their deficit to only four points entering the last quarter, but the Spurs bolted to a 95-83 lead with 1:30 left. Winning at home has become routine for the Spurs, who won four in a row at the AT&T Center. DeJuan Blair added a double-double with 12 points and ten boards; and Tim Duncan repeatedly got the better of the Lakers frontcourt duo of Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum as he did not commit a turnover against them, netting another double-double with 12 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks. Corey Maggette shot 5-of-12 for 10 points, but 4 of those 5 field goals were dunks over Bynum (two), Bryant and Artest. “I just wanted my presence to be known,” said Maggs, who put on a dunk-fest. “Offensively, just be aggressive. I wasn't trying to force anything. When you do that, good things happen.” Such an effort is why San Antonio, which lost at least seven games where they had double-digit leads, is enjoying a revival right now.

Gasol and Bynum combined for 9-of-19 shots, the Spaniard shooting 5-of-11 for 12 points. Lamar Odom posted 12 points off the bench, to go with five rebounds, and Jackson took note. “I gotta be honest and say only Lamar stepped up as a reserve. The rest of the bench needs to come in, whether you're going well or not, and up the ante a little bit,” Jackson said. The Lakers were paced by Bryant, who had a game-best 25 points (but needed 32 shots) and Ron Artest's, great overall performance, with 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists. But Los Angeles failed to defeat a top team again; the Lakers' last victory over a club with a winning record came February 3, coincidentally a 112-110 win over San Antonio; losing games against teams like Memphis, Boston, Orlando, and Oklahoma City, all in playoff contention, but winning games over Charlotte, Minnesota, the Clippers, Portland and Cleveland, all below .500. “After we achieved that last-second win over the Spurs, it's like our momentum dropped,” Bryant said. “We're going to keep fighting, but right now it's a frustrating issue for us.” The Spurs, who entered the game following a 100-94 win over Miami, had 56 points in the paint; that helps explain how they built a 10-4 advantage in free throw attempts in the second half. San Antonio also had a 50-42 edge in rebounds and 6-2 in blocks, and with this win, they are only 0.5 games behind the Lakers for the 1st seed in the West.

Actually that's a bug, just checked the schedule :? They had a 12-game streak, lost to the Heat and then defeated the Bulls, so they are close to start another streak.

So, 63 games posted. Incredible :cheeky: As we inch closer and closer to March Madness and the Draft, I'm gonna post more NCAA recaps and more prospects (including the NLSCers) so stay tuned, guys!
