Still waiting on Lamrock....if I don't have his predictions in the next 8 or 9 hours then I'll just give him default selections (the higher seeds).

19 March 2011

EAST REGION

NORTH CAROLINA SMASHES BUTLER'S DREAM OF REPEAT FINAL FOURS

(8)Butler were feeling good at half-time about their chances against (1)North Carolina, going into the half down by only 2 points, 34-36. The Tarheels instead stamped their dominance, outscoring the Bulldogs 40-12 in the second half to win 76-46.

The Tarheels were led by junior shooting guard Ken Davidson (17 points, 5 rebounds) and got solid support from freshman power forward Lloyd Murphy (9 points, 6 rebounds) and senior point guard Bernard York (7 points, 6 assists, 2 steals). The sole bright spot for the Bulldogs was the play of senior forward Vladimir Peciukas (13 points).

OTHER RESULT

(3)Kansas 65
(6)Pittsburgh 62

WEST REGION

WILDCATS CAUSE UPSET, OUTPLAY AND BEAT BRUINS

(8)Kentucky embraced and high fived as they became the first team in the tournament to slay a number one seed, defeating (1)UCLA 64-53. The Wildcats used a balanced attack led by Bobby Smalls (11 points, 5 rebounds) and shut down the Bruins' supporting cast.

UCLA was led by sophomore Perry Buchanan (18 points) in what will likely be his last game. Aside from Buchanan and freshman teammate Colby Horner (19 points, 11 rebounds), the rest of team only scored 16 points, with nobody else scoring more than 4 points.

OTHER RESULT

(3)Memphis 79 (R.Harper 10pts, 14rebs, 2blks)
(11)Nebraska 69 (M.Bosh 16pts, 4asts, 4stls, 5TO's)

SOUTH REGION

RESULTS

(4)Michigan State 90
(5)San Diego State 66

(2)Baylor 60 (R.Strickland 6pts, 1/6 FG, 7rebs, 2stls)
(7)Georgetown 65

MIDWEST REGION

TERPS RIDE FRESHMAN SCOTT IN BRADLEY'S ABSENCE

(2)Maryland looked like they were far from favourites heading into their second round game against (10)Notre Dame as they would have to play without All-American star point guard Floyd Bradley. Freshman shooting guard Marc Scott (18 points, 7/11 FG, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 6 turnovers) quickly made everybody forget about Bradley as he sparked a 16-4 run to start the second half to blow the game open as the Terrapins beat (10)Notre Dame 97-86, despite another stellar game from sophomore forward Churchill Dickey (29 points, 5 rebounds) for the Fighting Irish.

OTHER RESULT

(4)Duke 73
(5)Ohio State 81

20 March 2011

EAST REGION

RESULTS

(12)Utah State 75
(13)George Mason 80

(2)Illinois 84 (J.Fordham 6pts, 4ebs, 2blks)
(10)Dayton 70

WEST REGION

MOUNTAINEERS KNOCK OFF 2 SEED WISCONSIN

(7)West Virginia went into their match-up against the injured (2)Wisconsin Badgers with a lot of optimism and it paid off, with the Mountaineers holding on to win 60-53. (7)West Virginia used a strong first half defensively, leading 28-19 at the break, and held on in the second half when the Badgers made a big run late.

West Virginia was led by sophomore power forward Jeffery Morgan (11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals) and senior centre Chuck Long (6 points, 3/10 FG, 14 rebounds, 4 blocks) as the Mountaineers succeeded in their mission of containing dangerous senior guards Andy Woodson (8 points, 3/5 FG, 2/4 3Pt, 4 assists) and Marcel Moore (3 points, 1/11 FG, 1/4 3Pt, 6 assists).

OTHER RESULT

(4)Temple 84
(5)Louisville 73 (S.Nash 5pts, 4rebs)

SOUTH REGION

ANOTHER NUMBER ONE TOPPLES, THIS TIME VANDY IN OVERTIME

Senior shooting guard Dillon Stevens (24 points, 7/20 FG, 1/7 3Pt, 9/9 FT) made two free throws with 2.4 seconds to go to give a very confident (9)Miami (FL) squad a 81-80 overtime win over (1)Vanderbilt. The Commodores had numerous chances in regulation to put the game away, but the dogged determination of the Hurricanes clawed back a six point half time deficit. The loss represented the second time in two days that a top seed had been upset, UCLA being the other one to Kentucky yesterday.

Whilst freshman forward Art Burks (17 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals) played well in what was probably his last collegiate game, junior forward Jaime Buford (5 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals) and freshman centre Alonzo Warren (5 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks) both once again struggled on the big stage and don't currently appear polished enough to make the next step to the NBA.

OTHER RESULT

(3)Syracuse 47
(6)South Carolina 66 (J.Jeffries 14pts, 6rebs; R.Sharpe 14pts, 5rebs; R.Norton 9pts, 5stls, 5TO's)

MIDWEST REGION

RESULTS

(1)Villanova 81
(9)Gonzaga 63

(3)Xavier 70
(11)BYU 47

Sit is happy to see UNC advance. Wilt isn't. Wilt hates the Tar Heels for not wanting him to play.

Nice update. I should have went with my gut on the UCLA-Kentucy game. Damn it!

TOURNAMENT PICK 'EM UPDATE

Now here's where it gets interesting. Instead of giving you games to pick from, I want you to look into your crystal ball and tell me which four teams you think have what it takes to advance to the Final Four. Three points per correct answer. To show that I'm not a completely heartless bastard, if your selection only advances to Elite Eight then you get one point. No points if your team fails to get past the Sweet 16.

LEADERBOARD (AFTER ROUND 2)

    shadowgrin: 6
    Agent420: 6
    X's Wife: 6
    ----------------
    Houndy: 4
    Lamrock: 4
    Thierry: 4
    dare: 3
    Sit: 3
    Axel.: 2

As you can see, a big round from Hondo and shadow have propelled them up the leaderboard and solid rounds from Agent420 and Thierry have kept them in the hunt. The two most eager predictors (Axel. and Sit) have both fizzled out to date, but they can redeem themselves with some good selections in this round of picking.

Get your picks for the four teams that will make the Final Four to me by PM within the next day or so. If I don't get your picks by the time updates are up, you will get default picks (UNC, Memphis, Michigan State and Villanova).

Sorry, no update tonight guys. Ran out of time & haven't even started it yet. Maybe in a couple of days.

Don't know if I mentioned them before but my wife went with Kansas, Memphis, Michigan State & Ohio State to make the Final Four.

Hi guys, been really busy week at work. Once I get other shite done, will try to pump out an update or two.

To guys (excluding Sit & Wash) doing predictions, send me your NLSC-er details in advance, regardless of your current sitting. I'm expecting some of people below the line to get over it, but we shall see.

24 March 2011

EAST REGION

JAYHAWKS BREAK THE HEART OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS

(2)Illinois thought they had done enough to advance to the Elite Eight, holding the slimmest of leads, one point, with only 3.2 seconds to go. Unfortunately (3)Kansas had other ideas, as sophomore power forward Daryl Coleman (26 points on 12/14 FG) made a great instinctive play as he parlayed an errand layup from teammate George Bishop into the hoop as time expired. The Jayhawks had stolen the victory from the Fighting Illini as junior centre Jamaal Fordham (16 points, 5 rebounds) slumped his very large frame to the floor in disbelief as Coleman's teammates stormed the floor.

OTHER RESULT

(1)North Carolina 87 (B.York 21pts, 8/10 FG, 3/4 3Pt, 2/2 FT, 7asts, 2stls, 1TO; K.Davidson 19pts; L.Murphy 9mins, 2pts, 1reb)
(13)George Mason 70

SOUTH REGION

WE ARE SPARTA, SPARTANS CONQUER HURRICANES

(4)Michigan State put together any fears that an upstart (9)Miami (FL) squad would beat them, holding off a late flurry from departing senior guard Dillon Stevens (18 points, 4/7 3Pt, 6/6 FT, 5 rebounds) to win 74-68 and advance to yet another Elite Eight for Coach Tom Izzo. The Spartans once again got very strong leadership out of senior guard Fred Krywonis (16 points).

HOYAS CONTINUE MAGIC RUN, WITHIN ONE GAME OF FINAL FOUR

The (7)Georgetown Hoyas held off the pesky (6)South Carolina Gamecocks to win 61-57 and advance to the Elite Eight. The Hoyas were once again led by senior point guard Kenny Lane (18 points) as the Big East giants have well and truly put behind an average Big East conference season and hit their best form when it counts.

The Gamecocks were led by senior forward Robin Norton (16 points, 5 rebounds), but got disappointing performances from NBA hopefuls, senior shooting guard Jeremy Jeffries (9 points, 4 turnovers) and freshman swingman Richard Sharpe (2 points).

Georgetown's margin of victory in it's 3 wins to date: 3 points, 5 points, 4 points. They are a very tough out for any team.

WEST REGION

RESULTS

(4)Temple 59
(8)Kentucky 62

(3)Memphis 78 (R.Harper 2pts, 5rebs, fouled out in only 13mins)
(7)West Virginia 86 (C.Long 21pts, 5/16 FG, 11rebs, 4blks; J.Morgan 16pts, 7rebs, 5asts, 2blks)

MIDWEST REGION

TERPS RUN ENDS AT THE HANDS OF X

(2)Maryland had done very well to make it to the Sweet 16 without All-American lead guard Floyd Bradley, but their run ended against a tough and wily (3)Xavier Musketeers' squad, who used an 8-0 run midway through the second half to break away from the Terrapins.

The Musketeers best player was clearly senior shooting guard Leland Booker (19 points, 3 steals), but who also shut down rising freshman star Marc Scott (5 points, 1/2 FG, 6 turnovers).

OTHER RESULT

(1)Villanova 59
(5)Ohio State 72

26 March 2011

EAST REGION

TARHEELS ONCE AGAIN TOO GOOD, ROLL TO FINAL FOUR

(1)North Carolina once again showed its class as it led from start to finish, beating (3)Kansas 84-71. The Tarheels were led by junior guard Ken Davidson (21 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks) and freshman forward Lloyd Murphy (14 points) and were able to win despite a tough night for senior point guard Bernard York (5 points, 2/7 FG, 0/3 3Pt, 4 rebounds, 2 steals). Junior SG George Bishop (15 points, 9 rebounds) tried his best for the talented Jayhawks, but they could simply not match the magic of their previous match as they fell one game short of the Final Four.

Junior shooting guard Ken Davidson was the MVP of the East Region after averaging 18.3ppg, 5.0rpg and 1.5spg for the Tarheels.

SOUTH REGION

HOYAS DO IT AGAIN, COME FROM BEHIND TO SQUEEZE BY SPARTANS

The fairytale run continues for (7)Georgetown, as they lifted their game in the second half as they erased an eleven point half time deficit, winning the game 73-72. The Hoyas used a balanced attack to key their comeback, but still had to hold their breath as Spartans' senior guard Fred Krywonis (21 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) had his three pointer miss long on the buzzer.

Senior point guard Kenny Lane was the MVP of the South Region after averaging 12.8ppg and 2.5spg for the Hoyas. Whilst his numbers don't jump out, it was his lock down defense and leadership in close games (4 games won by an average of 3 points) that got him the nod.
