SAN ANTONIO, January 21 -- Kelenna Azubuike kept the San Antonio Spurs winless this season against the Knickerbockers in a new Hardwood Classics night. Azubuike's 3-pointer with 6.3 seconds left lifted New York to their 2nd straight victory, defeating the Spurs, 101-100; Danilo Gallinari missed a jumper but tracked down the long rebound and passed to Azubuike, who drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing. “I hit a couple of shots late,” said Gallinari, who had 10 points. “I took the shot with confidence. It fell a little short, but I followed with the board and I fed it to Kelenna and he did what a big-time player does.” San Antonio had one last chance for the win, but Manu Ginobili missed a jumper from just inside the arc and time expired as players battled for the rebound. San Antonio hosted the Knicks with a six-game winning streak under their belt, but could not overcome its perennial problems against the Knicks. Wilson Chandler scored a game-high 26 points and also four steals. “We thought we were going to come in here and win, to be honest,” Chandler said. “We're not going into arenas thinking we're going to lose anymore. That's the kind of confidence we have. We are confident enough to reach the playoffs.” Azubuike scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half, including the winning trey, and Amar'e Stoudemire had 21 points and nine rebounds for New York, which has won seven of their last ten games (a 20-23 record) after starting the season 3-11.

Ginobili finished with 14 points and four assists, and Corey Maggette added 16 points for San Antonio, which hung in despite making only 2-of-9 shots from beyond the arc. “We could be even more dangerous if we play like we were normally playing the last month, if we cut down a little on turnovers and more 3-point accuracy,” Ginobili said. “We weren't going to win a shootout tonight because we missed a lot of point-blank shots.” San Antonio began the game very quickly, with a 11-0 run in a little less than 3 minutes that obliged coach Mike D'Antoni to call a 20-second timeout. Then the Spurs had a 9-point advantage at halftime, but two separate 12-2 surges, one each in the third and fourth quarter, by New York gave them a 92-87 lead. Two free throws by Raymond Felton gave the Knicks a 96-90 lead, but Maggette made three straight jumpers and the Knicks missed two straight layups, to tie the game at 96 with 1:30 left; Felton added a double-double for New York with 10 points and 10 assists. A dunk by Stoudemire and a fadeaway jumper by Ginobili tied the game at 98; and the Spurs were up 100-98 after a layup by Tiago Splitter, but the bomb by Azubuike ended the story. “It's tough, man, especially when the game was pretty much in your hands,” Maggette said. “Guarding the guy that scores the winning bucket, that's going to sting me a little bit.”

“Closing the game out is something we are having trouble with, for whatever reason,” D'Antoni said. “We got Raymond up there stepping up at the line and almost gave this one away. The truth is we got our calls when it mattered the most. Only 9 free throws in the whole game? Well, I'm not the referee.” D'Antoni was visibly angry about that, and was called a technical in the second quarter for arguing with the refs. Stoudemire heard MVP chants from all the Knicks fans in the AT&T Center. “MVP? That trophy is given out at the end of the year. We are only halfway into the season so you can't do too much about it. Right now, LeBron is above everybody,” he added. “Kobe averaged 35 with an 81 in the past and he didn't get it. You have to do something dramatic in this league to overtake what LeBron has done this past couple of years.” Splitter, DeJuan Blair and Tony Parker all scored 13 points each for the Spurs, who were outrebounded 36-32. “It just burns, period,” Tim Duncan said of the last-second loss; Duncan only scored 8 points and five rebounds battling foul trouble. The Spurs haven't beaten the Knicks since March 10, 2010. Overall, the Spurs are 7-3 so far in January, and tomorrow open a 3-game road trip, at New Orleans, Golden State and Utah.

SAN ANTONIO -- A man of three words -- (“I'm outta here”) -- following the Spurs' last-minute loss to New York, guard Gary Neal had plenty to say the next time he met with the media -- this morning at New Orleans, before tonight's battle against the Hornets. Neal, who played 42 of the Spurs 43 games -- not playing against the Toronto Raptors two days ago -- and entered the game against New York averaging 5.0 points, joined the masses in wondering why San Antonio continues to let double-digit leads shrivel and cannot win games in the final minutes. It was something they did again in the 101-100 loss to the Knicks, at the AT&T Center: the Spurs squandered a double-digit lead they had in the first minutes of the third quarter. “We should have less than 10 losses right now. I don't know if we're being cursed by the basketball gods or something -- I don't know what it is, really,” Neal joked. “But we have to get it together. We put ourselves in great position to win that last game. It should have never been a loss.” The Spurs led by 15 with 9:34 to play in the third against New York, but two 12-2 runs by the Knicks killed their hopes. San Antonio went 1-for-8 from the field in that stretch, none of the shots taken by Neal, who finished scoreless. The offseason signee didn't come right out and say he should have gotten some looks, but close.

“The game is easy. When you're out there playing together, making shots, sharing the ball -- that's the fun part of it,” Neal said. “We're two different teams sometimes... we need to stay consistent. Nobody with a 'Spurs' wordmark on their jersey wants to lose. We have to find a way for everybody to get on the same page and close out games.” The Knicks used a zone defense, especially late in the fourth frame, and the Spurs had to settle for shots from beyond the arc, ending 2-of-9. “We've got to throw it in to our frontcourt in that case,” coach Gregg Popovich said. “You become more likely to shoot from 3-point land against a zone defense. There were numerous opportunities to throw the ball inside when they went zone and we didn't. That's something we have to do a better job of when teams go zone, not abandoning the inside play.” Neal didn't play against the Raptors because of Larry Hughes' hot play, as the former Knick had 7 points, two rebounds and two assists for a plus-minus of +10 against Toronto.

Just by looking at the schedule -- of the Spurs' 11 losses, they surrendered double-digits lead in 5 games. On November 14, a high flying effort by Russell Westbrook, who had 23 points and dished 15 assists, lifted the Oklahoma City Thunder, who won 108-85; the Spurs had a 5-0 run to start the second quarter for a 10-point lead. (...) On December 10, Joe Johnson led the Hawks back from a 12-point deficit in the second quarter at AT&T Center, and assisted Mike Bibby in a clutch 3-point dagger that buried San Antonio on the fourth for the final 95-89 score. (...) On December 28, Kobe Bryant scored 16 points in the first period and 34 on the first half to finish with a season-record 55 points, and overcome a 11-point deficit in the start of the fourth, and win 114-109. (...) On January 7, the Spurs trailed by 6 entering the second quarter against the Indiana Pacers, but a 12-2 run saw them with a 9-point lead at halftime. A couple of baskets in the third saw them with a 13-point lead, but Darren Collison scored 7 points in the third quarter in a 10-0 run by the Pacers, and lead by 3 at the start of the fourth, as Indiana won 112-99. (...) And the aforementioned loss to the Knicks two days ago. The Raptors game almost entered this list too: the Spurs had a 13-point lead entering the second period, but were down by 3 points in the third, while on December 22 the Denver Nuggets overcame a 18-point deficit but fell to a Manu Ginobili buzzer-beater.

Maggette shot an impressive 10-for-10 from the floor and scored 24 points for a +22, helping the San Antonio Spurs beat the New Orleans Hornets 102-92, despite, once again, almost blowing a 22-point third-quarter lead. Maggette also grabbed six rebounds, making 2-of-2 treys and 2-of-2 from the foul line, for the Spurs, who have won seven of their last eight. After controlling the offense all night and frustrating New Orleans' defense, Maggette capped his night by swatting a floater by Chris Paul three rows deep into the stands. “That's the player we traded for in June,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said, with a huge smile on his face. “I hope as the season progresses, he keeps getting better, but to be honest, there's not much to improve with a statline like that.” Tony Parker had 17 points and 11 assists, while Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili had 13 points apiece. The Spurs were up by 22 early in the third, but their cushion slipped away and the Hornets had two separate 8-0 runs to cut the deficit to 5. “They really caught fire in the third,” Parker said. “But we were able to get it done. We did a good job when it mattered the most.”

Marco Belinelli scored 16 his 20 points in the second half. He was followed by Emeka Okafor and Paul with 13 each, and David West and Trevor Ariza with 10 apiece. Okafor also had a season-high 19 rebounds. It was the second game in a row that the Spurs squandered a big lead -- they were up by 15 against New York three days ago, and lost in the final shot. “We've been here before,” Ginobili said. “We've let good leads slip away a lot of times already. We can't do this come playoffs time. This time, we were able to sustain offensively through working together, and defensively by making them make tough shots. They missed them, we made them, and we won.” Ginobili was visibly frustrated. The Spurs, at 33-11, now own the West's best record, 0.5 games over the Los Angeles Lakers (33-12). They have won three straight on the road now, and the streak could grow, as the Spurs now face Golden State and Utah. The Hornets fell to 21-23 with this loss. “Defensively we made things happen, we got some deflections, some steals, some stops and then we got out of energy,” Belinelli said. “We were close enough; we outrebounded them, we have more offensive rebounds. It was back and forth for a while.”

The Spurs were ahead 57-45 at halftime, and then were up 76-54 in the third frame, but the Hornets' second 8-0 run was capped by a 3-pointer by Jason Smith, cutting the deficit to 92-87. Maggette then answered with a 3 of his own to start a 7-0 run for the Spurs, for a 99-87 lead. “We are a team that's going to keep fighting and scrapping. We were a little disappointed in the first half,” Hornets coach Monty Williams said. “We played a lot harder in the second, we were able to get out, run a little bit, get a few easy buckets and that helps against a defense like San Antonio's.” With 6:40 left in the third quarter, Pops Mensah-Bonsu got two technicals and was ejected for yelling at a referee after he was called for an offensive foul. About 30 seconds later, Willie Green also got called for a technical. “You can't hurt your team because you get so frustrated and get yourself thrown out of the game,” Williams criticized his squad. The Spurs shot 51 percent from the field; they escaped Louisiana with the win, thanks to their advantage in the paint (56-40) and in blocks (11-4), as the Hornets dominated the offensive glass (15-3), steals (14-9) and also had less turnovers (18-11).

• Atlanta's Big 3 soar over Evans, Stuckey, Kings • Marvin Williams slammed home a dunk off the opening tip, and Atlanta's assault never let up until the game was well in hand. Williams had a 24 points and five rebounds, and Joe Johnson scored 27 points, four boards and four assists to help the Hawks control the whole game on the way to an easy 122-93 win over the Sacramento Kings on January 17. “We played great and passed the ball,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said. “For three quarters, we probably played as well as we have all year. I don't think Joe or Marvin missed any shots.'” Johnson and Williams combined for 20-of-26 field goals. Josh Smith finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds, yet another double-double, to go with five assists, three steals and two blocks. Mike Bibby added 20 points -- making four Hawks scoring 20 points or more. Rodney Stuckey scored 21 points for Sacramento, but spent the final 5 minutes on the bench with the game already decided. “I wanted to give some guys some minutes,” Kings coach Paul Westphal said. “I just felt like we ought to have the best energy on the floor, so we took our regulars out.” Tyreke Evans had 21 points of his own, while Omri Casspi and Samuel Dalembert had 15 and 10, respectively, for Sacramento.

• Players of the Week • The Miami Heat's Dwyane Wade and the Golden State Warriors' Monta Ellis today were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played January 16 - 22. Wade and the Heat had a 2-0 week -- with wins over Atlanta and Toronto. In a 114-90 win over the Hawks, Wade scored 32 points and grabbed nine rebounds. But the best Wade of the season appeared in a 130-81 defeat of Toronto: 53 points, 6 boards, 7 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks. Wade finished the week with averages of 42.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists. Golden State's Ellis averaged 33.7 points along with 3.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists, incredible numbers, even with the Warriors posting a 1-3 week; Ellis scored a season-high 44 points, three boards and six assists in a 113-111 win over New Jersey.

• Power Rankings • Best teams of the week? LA Lakers (4-0), Orlando (4-0), Indiana (3-0), San Antonio (3-1) and Phoenix (3-1). The worst? Toronto (0-4), Oklahoma City (0-3), Golden State (1-3), LA Clippers (1-4). High jumps -- Indiana (+7), Orlando (+6), Atlanta (+4), Portland (+2), Milwaukee (+2). Miami Heat bigman Chris Bosh suffered a torn left hamstring during the win over the Atlanta Hawks on January 18. The team announced today that an MRI exam confirmed the injury and Bosh will be out indefinitely -- at least 6 weeks. Bosh is averaging 22.7 points and 9.3 rebounds, shooting a career-high .526% from the field for the Heat (34-10). Sacramento Kings swingman Donte Greene has a broken left hand that will require surgery, and he is expected to be out at least a month, the Kings announced today. The team says Greene broke the fifth metacarpal bone in his hand.

• All-Star Voting • The 2011 NBA All-Star Ballot was unveiled on November 18th, during a special tip-off event in Los Angeles, the Official Host City of NBA All-Star 2011, and All-Star Balloting began on November 25th at 3 p.m. ET. • Nuggets sign Alonzo Gee • Denver Nuggets general manager Masai Ujiri announced today that the team has signed free agent swingman Alonzo Gee.
