Manu, Parker, Tim combine for plus-minus of +47, rally in fourth period to beat Celtics
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (SAS :: BOS)

BOSTON, January 5 -- The Spurs were tying the game at 40, before Tony Parker had two consecutive turnovers and the Celtics started a 12-2 run. Just when it seemed like his mistakes might doom San Antonio, Parker hit back-to-back floaters and assisted Corey Maggette on a layup that gave the Spurs the lead for good and sent them to a 100-95 victory over the Boston Celtics. “That two turnovers killed me,” Parker (+12) said. “But you can't let that frustrate you, you can't let that get you down. That's what we did, we came up with some stops down the stretch and we got the victory.” Parker scored 15 points to go with 11 assists and Manu Ginobili added 21 as the Spurs bounced back from a loss at New York against the Knicks. With a game at Indiana against the Pacers coming up, San Antonio is looking for a new winning streak. “We struggled at times in the game, but we got it done,” Ginobili (+21) said. “We're going into the next game at Indiana with some confidence,” added Tim Duncan (+14), who contributed with 11 points, three blocks and nine rebounds.

The Spurs had a 13-point lead entering the second quarter, but at halftime they were down by 1. The Celtics took a 6-point lead when Kendrick Perkins tipped a missed shot by Rajon Rondo. After some back-and-forth minutes, Ray Allen added a 3-pointer and Boston extended their lead to 12 with 6:21 left in the third. Allen posted a game-high 25 points, plus four rebounds, four assists and three steals. The outcome seemed assured, but San Antonio did show signs of life late in the period, answering with a 16-3 run to come back into the contest. Maggette made a 3-pointer to give the Spurs a ray of hope. After Rondo was called for a backcourt violation, rookie James Anderson (16 points, two blocks) hit another from long range to cut the deficit to 75-71 with 1:25 left: it was going to be a big thriller in the fourth. But the Celtics were playing their third game in four days, their legs weren't on the shots down the stretch; they missed their last seven field goals. “We can't win if I go out and shoot 7/22 in the last period,” Paul Pierce said. “It's going to be hard for us to win like that, point blank.” Pierce had 16 points and five assists for Boston.

Rondo's backcourt violation miscue had Celtics coach Doc Rivers scratching his head on a blunder-filled night by both squads, that featured 32 turnovers and many other mistakes. “I thought our energy was good but our tanks were empty,” Rondo said. Rondo scored 6 points and 11 assists, but a season-worst 8 turnovers. “I am kicking myself because eight turnovers is a lot. I had some costly ones, some stupid ones, like I hadn't even played in weeks. I am pretty upset with myself for some of my decision-making.” Perkins and Delonte West also scored 6 points each. Kevin Garnett had 21 points but a season-low 4 rebounds, on 10-of-12 shooting. But San Antonio's accuracy on the paint, their bench's contribution and the blocking fest was too much for Boston to handle: 52-42 in the colored area, 44-22 for the Spurs' reserves and 14-0 in rejections. “Every game we go out and we do something extremely well,” said Tiago Splitter, who is the Spurs' top bench contributor. “At the end of the day we just need to put it all together. This hard work is going to pay off for us.” Splitter had 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocks off the bench.

    Pacers host Spurs tomorrow; McDyess shooting to improve
    nba.com/spurs/beat | January 6th, 2011

    SAN ANTONIO -- On the final play before halftime in last night's 5-point win over Boston, the ball went to Spurs' center Antonio McDyess. Although McDyess was way open -- Jermaine O'Neal went to double-team Tony Parker -- he was 15-feet from the basket and badly missed a shot before the clock expired. Perhaps lacking confidence, McDyess did not take another shot for the remainder of the game. It's been that way in the last couple of games with McDyess, known more for this rebounding and shot blocking -- a stellar defense. McDyess even posted four double-doubles this season, including a near-perfect 19-point, 10-rebound against Phoenix on December 20.

    McDyess, 36 years old, whom the Spurs signed back on July of 2009, is averaging 4.3 points per game -- the lowest average of his career, and he hasn't taken more than nine shots in a game this season. “Some guys live off scoring and thrive off getting shots. If they're not doing that, then they're no good,” McDyess said. “I'm the type of player who is willing to do whatever it takes to win. If that's doing all the dirty work, then that's what I'll do. But I think it has come to the point that if this team wants to go to the next level, I'm going have to score and make moves in the post to become more of a threat.” Perhaps if the Spurs were healthy and had Tim Duncan and DeJuan Blair on a 100 percent, McDyess' limited offensive game would not be much of a factor. But without Blair, and limiting Duncan's minutes for May, coach Gregg Popovich needs scoring from everyone if the Spurs are going to kickstart another winning streak. Entering tomorrow's game against the Indiana Pacers at the Conseco Fieldhouse, the Spurs (26-9) have lost 2 of their last 5 games, after posting 8 straight wins in mid-December.

    With one of their players already sidelined for the remainder of the season, the Pacers made a move last night to help bolster their game. Forward Serge Ibaka is expected to make his debut for his new team tomorrow, as Indiana will attempt to get back on winning ways in a new encounter with San Antonio. The Pacers acquired Ibaka and cash from the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for swingman Dahntay Jones and a 2nd round pick for 2012. The Pacers made the deal after seeing their frontcourt struggle, and even worse, losing Jeff Foster to a torn patellar tendon. And it looks like the Pacers aren't done making moves; rumors for a trade shipping Mike Dunleavy Jr. out of Indianapolis have been floating for at least a month. The 6-10 Ibaka averaged 3.8 points and 3.6 rebounds in 35 games for the Thunder this season, including a 10-point, 6-rebound outing on November 14, when the Spurs lost to OKC. The Pacers are coming off Sunday's 106-89 loss to the New York Knicks; Darren Collison scored 18 points, Danny Granger added 17 and Tyler Hansbrough 16 for Indiana, who suffered 35 points from Amar'e Stoudemire. Indiana received 25 points from Granger and 13 from Collison in a 101-72 fall against San Antonio in their last meeting, October 27, the season opener for both teams.

No it's not.
I consider a smart trade by the cpu if both sides did it 'smart'. OKC got molested in that trade by giving away a valuable big for cash and a 2nd rd. pick only. Dahntay Jones? They already have Thabo and Harden, no use for Jones. Unless I'm mistaken and both Thabo and Harden are no longer with OKC in this story.

I made the deal actually. I included my 2nd round pick and then swapped them back; I have CPU Trades off. But it was actually smart from both sides, the Rumor Mill had Ibaka, and said "Thunder considering Pacers offer of Jones" so I went ahead with it. The Pacers have Foster gone for the season and also Hansbrough is a bust so far, they needed a PF... and the Thunder only had Stanley Robinson as a backup for Durant; I know Jones isn't much a SF, but IMO is more a SF than Harden. Thabo is out injured for another month, if I remember correctly. So both teams got needed depth. :)

Pacers ride Granger, Collison's efforts & Maggette's worst night ever, overcome 9-point deficit to down Spurs
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (SAS :: IND)

INDIANAPOLIS, January 7 -- Darren Collison has been quietly proving his doubters wrong this year. The point guard had 26 points, four steals and a season-high 13 assists as the Indiana Pacers beat the San Antonio Spurs, 112-99. Collison, who has been criticized for some off-nights in November, has been the Pacers' most durable player for December and January. He has started every game and has played some of the best basketball of his young career. “Darren can play like that, night in, night out,” teammate Brandon Rush said. “He's our floor general. The better he plays, the better we play as a squad. We need him playing like that because he's definitely one head of our monster.” Collison scored 13 points in each half and helped the Pacers win despite forward James Posey suffering a lower back strain in the second quarter. “It's been like that the last few years -- this team has had to play without somebody,” Danny Granger said. “The team is used to it. I think everybody embraces their chance to shine and go out and play.”

Granger scored a game-high 28 points and Tyler Hansbrough had 12 for the Pacers, to go with 10 rebounds. The Spurs gave up 29 points in the fourth quarter to lose for the second time in three games. The Spurs trailed by 6 entering the second quarter, but a 12-2 run saw them with a 9-point lead at halftime. Collison scored 7 points in the third quarter in a 10-0 run by the Pacers, and lead by 3 at the start of the fourth. “I came out more aggressive and tried to make more opportunities for myself and my teammates,” Collison said. “I tried to penetrate and hit the open shots.” San Antonio didn't make a field goal in a 5-minute lapse in the fourth, and their poor shooting allowed Indiana to increase a 95-92 lead to 108-97, and the outcome was decided. Rush had 10 points -- all in the first half -- for Indiana, and Roy Hibbert had 11 points and a season-high 17 rebounds. “Roy did a tremendous job,” Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said. “He got on the ground at least three times going after loose balls. That's a huge effort for a 7-foot-2 guy. His points and rebounds were huge, but his three blocks is what I like to see.” The Spurs committed 9 turnovers -- 6 in the second half -- resulting in 14 points for Indiana.

San Antonio's Manu Ginobili had 20 points and three assists for the Spurs. Corey Maggette only had 7 points in a 1/14 shooting night, before fouling out with 30 seconds left on the game. He made an obscene gesture to the Conseco Fieldhouse crowd when he fouled out. “I was frustrated there at the end of the contest. That was one of my worst games of my life. But that gesture, that shouldn't happen, and I apologize for that and it won't happen again,” he said at press conference. Hibbert, who saw the gesture, said, “He's going to pay for that one -- with money.” The Pacers shot 50 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Spurs 42-37. “We trailed on the first, but in the second, we started fast and built a nice lead. But then we started throwing the ball all over the place, I saw some dumb shooting attempts and we couldn't sustain our advantage,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich admitted. “There were some mind-boggling things going on out there.” Tim Duncan scored 18 points and 12 rebounds, and Tony Parker added 12 and George Hill 11 for the Spurs, who played their sixth straight game without DeJuan Blair. Antonio McDyess, who was scoreless against Boston, posted 10 and eight boards.

Longhorns show versatility in victory over Orange; lack of 3-pointers in Texas

TEXAS, January 8 -- The Texas Longhorns may not have had Axel Gomez on full power, but they had Shawn Williams and Matt Hill on both offense and defense. Williams and Johnson more than made up for the struggles of Gomez as Texas won at home, and posted a 5-1 record with a 73-52 rout of the Syracuse Orange. It was a back-and-forth contest from the outset, 10-10 in the first quarter and then a 2-point lead by Texas. A 15-15 second quarter promised a thriller for the second half, and the third quarter didn't disappoint. But the fourth quarter was a blowout. Gomez didn't play like he normally does, scoring only 7 points on 3-of-7 shooting; while Williams earned POTG honors with 19 points, five boards and three steals. Hill saw increased time into the starting lineup and responded with 10 points and a season-high 13 rebounds, in absence of Clint Chapman, injured.

The duo combined for 16 points in the fourth quarter, when Texas built the lead for the victory. “This was a great game for me for my confidence,” Williams said. “I have been struggling a little bit in past games. Tonight, I found my rhythm and hopefully I can carry on for this team, and get more triumphs.” Alexis Wangmene scored 8 points for the Longhorns, all in the third. “I've been going with the flow the last couple of games,” said Wangmene. “I feel like I'm getting there.” Mookie Jones scored 20 points for Syracuse, the only Orange in double figures; Rick Jackson and Kris Joseph added 8 apiece. Chris Hova, just like Gomez, struggled in a new NLSC Academy duel. Hova added 4 points, six rebounds and three assists, shooting a season-worst 1-of-11 from the field -- 0-of-7 from beyond the arc. “Shawn is a good player and hard worker,” Texas coach Rick Barnes said. “He surprised me with this great game. He makes an usual contribution, but tonight he passed it.” Texas ourebounded Syracuse, 53-40, and had 27 assists on 34 field goals. But most of the points of the night came in the paint: 80 points between both squads, as the teams shot a combined 3-of-40 from beyond the arc -- 0-of-22 for the Orange.
