New Orleans- Ruben Boumtje Boumtje will likely remain on the injured list and not play a minute for the Cavaliers this season. But coach Paul Silas hasn't given up on the 25-year-old center.

"From day one, coach has worked with me on my shot," said Boumtje Boumtje [pronounced boom-shay boom-shay]. He's stuck with me, and my shot has improved. He shows that he cares about every single person on this team." That care has meant hundreds of shots after practice for Boumtje Boumtje, who was acquired from Portland along with Jeff McInnis in a trade for Darius Miles. Silas said Boumtje Boumtje, a 7-footer, is a raw talent whose skills have to be refined. That will include plenty of work over the summer, but for now, Silas wants to improve Boumtje Boumtje's shot.
"I figured if I could change Carlos Boozer's shot, I could change his," Silas said. "His shot was horrible. Once a guy changes his shot and becomes competent, he becomes more confident.
This guy works and he shoots every day. It's hard to bring him off the court. . . . This kid always works."

I've never seen him play, and given his career numbers for minutes per game, most minutes played in a game and the fact he's appeared in only 44 games in 3 seasons, I'd say most people haven't seen all that much of him either. His stats aren't worth posting, but he barely plays so that's to be expected.

Allowing Diop to develop doesn't seem like a priority for the Cavaliers. Most players who are drafted as "projects" see a significant increase in playing time by the third year, but Silas doesn't seem to be willing to increase Diop's role. That might open up the door for Ruben to become the backup centre, but with Ilgauskas playing 30+ mpg, he probably won't have much more of an impact than he does now.

I'm predicting that he'll be one of those players who is taken in the second round, manages to stick around for a couple of years but ultimately finds himself playing in minor leagues, or if he can impress a European club, playing in a league over there. Still, regular posters are probably familiar with my predictions - expect him to be an All-Star in 2005.

Silas probably like Ruben over Diop because Ruben played four years at Georgetown...he has far more basketball experience than Diop. Besides, Diop sucks from what I've seen of him...he fouls a lot and can't finish. Good shotblocker, though, but that's how he gets a lot of fouls...trying to block shots.
