Kobe Bryant and Yao Ming?

Postby Little_Big_Man on Mon Mar 08, 2004 2:37 pm

I know this is somewhat of a dumb topic but I think this would be great. What if Kobe goes to Houston? If Houston could trade away Francis and his contract for some good role players, Kobe would make a great fit. Think about why LA won so many championships? Shaq and Kobe and their prime and great team defense. Houston already has great defense and Yao is the next most dominating center. They lack scoring and the ability to finish off a team in the 4th. Kobe would be their cure to that. He would bring 25+ppg, great defense and a 4th quarter finisher. I think that this would make them a championship contender. Lets face it, Shaq is past his prime and gets matched almost perfectly by Yao who can make a shot past 8 feet and can make freethrows. Plus Yao wouldn't bring a lot of ego. This way Kobe of course would have the ego but Yao wouldn't. Besides it would be almost like LA only younger with better defense. Unless Shaq picks up his defense LA won't win another ring

Imagine that, Kobe leaves Shaq for Yao. What a slap in the face to the "Big Mumble".

I don't think Bryant would go to Houston, as Bryant has said, he wants his own team. He wants to be "the man". Hey, it's his carreer, he has the right to decide what he wants to do. I doubt he would go to Houston, where the Houston team went from "Steve Francis' Team" to "Yao Ming's Team". If Bryant decides to walk, and god forbid he doesnt walk into jail, I see him going to some team like the Hawks or the Grizzlies where he'll be rejoined with West. Anyways, point being, he'll head to a loser team a la McGrady did with Orlando. Best descision? Hell no, he won't win. But yes, what could be better then being named the scoring champion for a season? (McGrady last year.)

*sigh* Aaah Bryant, you cease to entertain. Best would be to stay put in LA, Shaq/Malone/Payton won't be around for THAT long, wait it out, and voila, you've got you're own team. Anywho, best of luck Kobe. (Y)

sigh I can't imagine the Yao and Steve connection breaking up :(
I mean they are so tight on and off the court :bday:

Kobe will never win a MVP on Shaq's team IMO.

But I do think Kobe would be the man if it was him and Yao.

O'Neal has struck a conciliatory note, recognizing Bryant's importance to his own success.

"I know if I didn't have a guy like Kobe, I'd only have one [championship ring] instead of three," O'Neal said Sunday

With the exception of the Sacramento game, there's no way O'Neal could complain about the way Bryant played after the All-Star break, when Bryant averaged 28.7 points, 8.8 assists and 8.0 rebounds a game. Bryant did such a good job of involving O'Neal that his and O'Neal's scoring averages increased during that time; Bryant went from 21.5 to 22.9 points a game, O'Neal went from 20.8 to 21.5.

Just think of it as the reverse of the 2001 stretch run, when Bryant was injured, the Lakers found success by giving the ball to O'Neal and Bryant had no choice but to go along with the winning formula after he returned. Although O'Neal wants to be the focal point of the offense, it's too much of a burden to carry the Lakers on his own and it would wear him out before the playoffs. The more the ball goes inside, the more opponents jump all over O'Neal.

It surely would have been better with Bryant. Perhaps O'Neal will come to the conclusion that his chances of getting some more rings would be better with Bryant, and Bryant will realize that his own championship hopes — not to mention his bank account — will be better if he re-signs with the Lakers.

I'm not sure if it would work out as well as the current pairing of Shaq and Kobe. Yao needs to take more shots, while Shaq already has a scorer's mentality. Yao is having more and more impressive nights at the offensive end this season, but he's not as consistent as Shaq when it comes to scoring a lot of points (and taking a lot of shots). Things would be a little tougher for Kobe if the defense was allowed to pay him more attention.

Don't get me wrong, Kobe's a great scorer and can abuse defenses with his versatile offensive skills. But Shaq's role in creating opportunities and taking some of the pressure off him cannot be ignored. I'm not sure Yao would be able to provide the same kind of advantage, at least not yet.

I didn't think this topic would get much feedback. After seeing your comments I would have to agree with you guys. I am a huge Lakers fan and an even bigger Kobe fan. I just thought that if he does decide to leave the Lakers that this would be the most ideal situation besides San Antonio of course. I too wishes that he would stay with the Lakers. If the lakers can remain healthy they are very, very tough to beat as shown when they were like 20-5 early in the season. If Kobe's injury isn't that serious and Malone comes back they can still make a serious title run this year. During the summer they should all get into some serious conditioning and weight lifting so that everyone comes back next season healthy and in shape. Its been a flip flop with Kobe healthy last season and Shaq not in shape and then this year Shaq was in decent shape and Kobe wasn't.
