Is that the final dunk by J-Rich, well if it was, the his final dunk in 03 was better.

No. The final one was a lob and he tried to catch it and do a 360 and stick his elbow in the rim.
Before that he tried a 360 between the legs off of the lob like 6 times, but couldnt control it.

WTF! He got 6 tries!! I will see the whole allstar weekend in a week and so. Anyway last years Slam dunk contest was quite good I think, to few players though.

Something like that. He missed the first time and decided to try and make it up. He kept dropping the ball and the judges said it wasnt an attempt so he just did a 360 windmill.

i read a rumor that a replacement for the dunk contest would be Stephan Marbury!!! Now that i would have watched!!
Tue Feb 17, 2004 6:39 am
Alright...well how about we suggest more ways to fix it?
The objective of the contest is to let the fans see some insane dunks, right?
So why are we eliminating some dunkers after only two dunks? I think...if you're only going to have 4 people competing...each dunker should get to do 4 dunks...with the highest total winning. Standard replacement/attempt rules can apply.
That way...the people who are already eliminated are free to try their craziest stuff. Early dunks that get 50's will also count towards the final win. Also...no one would walk away demoralized...every dunker could steal the show no matter who technically wins. They could also give out the highest score trophy and the best dunk of the night too.
I think something like this...emphasizing the show over the competition...could get people like Kobe and Vince back into the event.

How are the going to get back in the event when this is there 6th or 7th year?
Tue Feb 17, 2004 7:58 am
I guarantee you that if Kobe and Vince did want to do it, they'd change the rule. But they don't expect guys like Kobe and Vince to want to do it, so it doesn't matter if the rule's there or not. Ricky Davis is probably one of the few guys who's played more than four years, and want(ed) to do the contest.
If Kobe and Vince wanted to be in the contest do you think the guy who runs the event would just go, "Sorry, evidence from past events show that it's the guy's in years one-through-four who attract the most viewers. We just don't think it'd be exciting with vets like you two."
Tue Feb 17, 2004 9:39 am
I think people should be able to try a dunk until they get it right or are tired of trying.
Also...as EG said...4 dunks would be good.
In addition, much like the all-star game...have fans VOTE on who they wanna see in the dunk contest. Those who get voted should feel pressured to take part and perform. People like t-mac, kobe and even lebron should be made to treat the dunk contest with as much respect as the all-star game. J-rich is the first guy ive ever seen that loves the dunk contest the way he does...u can see he wants to compete in it every year.
Tue Feb 17, 2004 6:29 pm
there is no way the fans whould get to vote for dunkers! Think about it... if we got to choose no one whould ever know who els can dunk exept for the players who get 30 min per game and r well known dunkers?
I never knew that Fred Jones could dunk like that or that Chris Anderson can do that! Who knows, like I said before, i read a rumor on hoopshpe.com that Steph Marbuty would be replacement incase of injury.
Plus some pple would try to make a joke an vote for Kidd, of Boykins, or who knows...Malone! And if u think that pple dont make jokes like that, look what happent to the governer of Cali!!!!
I think there shoudl def be more players, and some sort of judging system, and one of the MOST important things is for judges to re-view the dunk to give it a score. Because as we all remmeber how D.Mase made a dunk where he jumped off both feet and plit his legs and only got 42, and same thing this year.
And of course make sure that player completes the dunk, allow as may mstakes as he need!
Tue Feb 17, 2004 7:08 pm
Include the option to drop your worst dunk score, what previous dunk contests allowed. For example, the top 2-3 dunk scores count.
Tue Feb 17, 2004 7:13 pm
in the case of fred jones last dunk how could you call it a dunk when he didn't even touch the ring?? he came no where near the ring to dunnking it yet they call it an attempt what a load of shit? i think what has been said above needs to be incorporated! especailly the 6man contest!!
Tue Feb 17, 2004 7:39 pm
They should change the rules back to the old ones. Better still, lower the hoop to 9 1/2 feet or 9 feet, so the players can put more creativety in their dunks
Wed Feb 18, 2004 3:56 am
Can somebody post some video?

Besides the JR 'off the board, through the legs' dunk....all the other dunks were nothing special.
I have to agree judging was poor. Why the hell do they have those guys (Jabbar, Magic) judging the contest? They gotta have past 'great' dunkers judging. Get guys like Dominique Wilkins, Kenny Smith (like in the past), MJ, Dr. J (like in the past), Clyde Drexler, Spud Webb. C'mon those would be good judges!
They definitely gotta go back to old school ways of having more competitors and get rid of that 'one replacement dunk' rule.
The excitement isn't there as it once was.
My 2 cents...

the dunks were pretty crappy this year. More creativity + attempts are necessary. Somebody should try that FT line through the legs dunk, much like James White did. That would win the contest straight out! What about dunking blind folded like B Davis tried a few yrs ago

My PonTel tapes arrived a few days ago, so I've finally been able to see the All-Star Weekend.
My thoughts on the dunk contest:
There were some great dunks in this year's contest. Jason Richardson's off-the-backboard-between-the-legs dunk was amazing - simply amazing. But the contest was too short, and the ending two anti-climatic, which took something away from the impressive dunks. The scoring also seemed inconsistent.
I wouldn't call it the worst dunk contest ever. Cut down to the highlights, it's entertaining. But after last year's contest, it was a little disappointing. As we've all said before, the NBA needs to make the contest longer and invite more competitors. The dunk contest can still be entertaining, but it isn't really being given a chance.
Thu Feb 26, 2004 5:07 pm
I think they should lower the rim for the dunk contest.... maybe to about 9 feet and 1/2 nothing too drastic, just a slight decrease in height, so that the competitors can perform more high difficulty dunks, resulting in a more entertaining contest for us, the fans. Maybe they could even reduce the circumference of the ball by half an inch or so, so the players can have more control over the dunk.

u guys r idiots. Always complaing, half of yous cant dunk it straight up. Fred jones dunks were nice. J rich had best dunlk. And as far as vince his dunks were overated cuz j richs dunks in last 2 yrs were better than any vinces dunks. Even des masons dunk last yr shits on vince carter.
All they need 2 do is bring in 8 ppl like they used to.
Stop complaing and enjoy the contest.
