If you can get it to a teammate, that's clearly the best option, but if you have to choose between putting it out of bounds, letting it go, or risking tapping it to an opponent for an uncontested layup, putting it out of bounds is the better option.
Agreed. What's ideal isn't always feasible.
That's like saying hitting a jump shot is better than missing one. Of course swatting the ball out of bounds is better than blocking it back to the other team... that's why you block it to a teammate, or even block it to yourself as some of the big white guys seem to do.
Except that as I said, getting it to a teammate or yourself isn't always possible, and nobody ever says 'how could he have missed a shot? Wilt would never have missed a shot' every time someone misses a shot.

In an interview Bill Russell said that he told his teammates it was ok for them to lose their man as long as they box out Russell's assignment so that they could get the rebound from the successful block. Just a trivia.

thats something i wish more players did. you know if you get beat that your center is gonna have to step up, instead of watching maybe you run to his man knowing he will be left open?

You could be like Duncan and not leave your feet so you're not out of position if they recover the ball.
This is twice as good because if you jump three feet in the air and swat AND MISS your defense is even worse off than if you tip blocked it back to the opposing team.

Duncan even with his feet on the ground can block or distract opposing players enough to miss the shot. But I think the Suns took advantage of that in the series against the Spurs, by taking him out of paint area and shooting over him. That was just sick offense by the Suns, daring as fuck.
THX TO DOPE-JAO FOR THE SPECIAL SIG! <3

Enjoy! <3 Jao

Yeah, the Suns have amazing offense. I was almost surprised when the Lakers won.
