Watched this movie for capstone thesis class called Sansho the Bailiff (1954) by Kenji Mizoguchi. The film is based on one of the short stories by one of Japan's most acclaimed writers Mori Ogai andof the better movies we have seen so far in the course. Aside from this one we've watched:

Rikyu (1989) by Hiroshi Teshigahara about the 16th century tea master Sen no Rikyū.
The 47 Ronin (1941) also by Kenji Mizoguchi. Its about the retainers of Lord Asano exacting a nearly two-year long vendetta versus Kira. Apparently Keanu Reeves is in the American remake of it.
Seven Samurai (1954) by Akira Kurosawa. One of the most influential films ever made and its about a village of farmers hiring ronin/masterless Samurai to defend their village against bandits.
The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail (1945) by Akira Kurosawa based on the Noh play and tells the story of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his retainers escaping from his brother.
Kagemusha (1980) by Akira Kurosawa about a bandit posing as a lord after the lord dies.
Gonza the Spearman (1986) by Masahiro Shinoda. Honestly I wasn't that interested and fell asleep during this movie, but I think it had to do with Japanese tea ceremony, adultery, and lots of blood squirting left and right.
Hara Kiri (1962) by Masaki Kobayashi deals with masterless samurai during the peaceful Edo period and one father's attempt to exact revenge for his son-in-law's death.
Samurai Rebellion (1967) also by Masaki Kobayashi. Its about a a daimyo marrying his ex-concubine to his best swordman's son and then stealing her back again and the battle that ensues with that swordman and the daimyo's men.
Last Samurai (2003) by Edward Zwick. Unsure why we watched, maybe it was because it portrayed the demise of Samurai and their culture at the hands of Western, 19th century weapons.

Basically the films followed the rise of samurai culture to its decline as Japan was influenced by western culture and weapons. Definitely one of the more interesting courses I've taken in college. Would have never thought to even take a look at these movies, their pace is usually very slow and they averaged around 2 and half hours a showing but definitely a different film experience than the usual stuff you see nowadays.

how awesome is that. i'd go back to school just to take this course and watch these movies again. these 2 are one favs of all time. i heard kagemusha is on blu ray. put it on my netflix queue (Y)

i was pleasantly surprised with "Shooter". the special effects of the bullets hitting people were top notch. in the making of featurette- Marky Mark went through some sniper training and actually became a pretty decent shot. how about that

i watched "the Hurt Locker" over the weekend. awesome. director & writer really knew how to draw out the tension. it is well deserving of all the awards/nominations it has received. highly recommended (Y)

girl made me watch moulin rouge last night. Not that bad, but it was like someone got stoned, put their ipod on shuffle, then wrote the movie based on what played.

The last movie I watched was Gran Torino, which was pretty good, and surprisingly funny too.

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid

Decent steve martin spoof of old film noir. Great lines in it though.

"I hadn't seen a body put together like that since I solved the case of the Murdered Girl with the Big Tits. "

"If you need me, just call. You know how to dial, don't you? You just put your finger in the hole and make tiny little circles"

Edit: Finished up American Movie and As Good as it Gets. Meh to both.

Just went out to see Cop Out due to the fact the "restricted" trailer made me laugh my ass off. It wasn't that bad. I mean the story wasn't the greatest and it was really really corny overall but there are still a lot of laughs in that movie.
Opinions are my own.

My friends asked me to see Valentines Day with them and what a huge mistake it was for me to say yes. Apart from the all star cast, I didn't see anything great or interesting about the movie. A-list actors are the main reason why some people watched the movie. :cheeky:

Decided to catch a movie on my bday with my Mrs & saw Blind Side. A pretty good movie, even if the actual story has been Hollywood-ised.

I had the same impression. By any chance did you watch Aliens before this one? The second one really did raise the bar.

The second one really did raise the bar.

I would certainly disagree. The first one is a classic, a masterpiece of tension and horror, whereas the second one was much more of an action-packed Hollywood flick, even if it was still okay.
It's just that if you've watched other Aliens or Aliens-related (the Vs Predator bullshit) flicks before it, the 1st one will probably seem a little boring and predictable.

I had never seen a single alien movie. Aliens is actually up possibly tonight lol. The only thing i've seen is constant parody like in Conker's Bad Fur Day and that directv commercial.

Stop after Alien: Resurrection. There actually were no Alien vs. Predator movies, it's a big stupid internet meme.

And know that David Fincher tried to get his name pulled off Alien 3 (and has called it a "toy movie") and refuses to do directors commentary for it, and that it went through 9000 scripts. And Joss Whedon hates the way they shot his script for Resurrection.

finally got around to Aliens last night. Not bad: better than the first one and I sort of understand the success of the series.

i now know where the south park reference of "they mostly come at night, mostly" is from
and then of course one of the epically bad yet awesome lines in cinema history

"get away from her you bitch!"

I was pleasantly surprised by World's Greatest Dad. I probably got it confused at first with another Robin Williams flick meant for wider audiences, but this one is actually an indie flick, and an extremely dark and awkward comedy where Williams is excellent.

Since break started saw the Hangover and Night at the Museum 2. Great movie and had me laughing from start to end. Never saw the whole movie until now although caught the last maybe 5 minutes over the summer when I got back to the apartment from work and roommate had it playing. Sherlock Holmes wasn't bad, saw it again.

I actually liked it, it was different but still had plenty of tension going on.

Saw The Hangover which was pretty good, even though I couldn't help but comparing in my head the "waking up the next morning" scenes to Fear & Loathing's, which is not necessarily fair, since nothing can beat what Duke and Gonzo do to their own hotel suite, well both suites actually...

the hangover was a 20 somethings trip having a good time. Fear and Loathing is really aimed at aging disenfranchised people who feel like they missed the boat in the land of opportunity and that the american dream is dead.

Was underwhelmed when i saw hangover...thought pictures on the camera were better than entire movie
