Denver Nuggets - The Next Level is back!!!

Image
Strike a pose boys, you're back on the air

After what felt like an agonising 2 weeks or so, my Denver Nuggets dynasty is returning! Did I find my old copy of NBA Live 10? No I didn't... instead, I went to EB and got myself another copy. Thoughts of picking up NBA 2k10 or an earlier NBA Live crossed my mind, but in the end, I wanted to continue this dynasty because it feels like it's going somewhere.

To all the regulars, thanks for your patience. I have plenty of updates to come, so please keep reading. And to stem my dominance in the league statistically, I'm thinking of changing the simulated quarters to 10 minutes. If Earl Smith is still in the race after that, you might have to accept the fact that he is now a superstar

Welcome to my dynasty story :) The sim stats are a bit lopsided, but I'm hoping to amend that in the upcoming seasons by giving the computer longer simulated quarters. Hope you continue to read

The old copy is in a box somewhere, out of it's case. Because the case was found. Thanks for the kind words.

It's funny because although I had to buy the game again, the thought of my dynasty being over before it was just starting to take off was my motivation. I didn't want this to end up being the Shaun Livingston of dynasties.

Thanks mate, plenty to come with the All-star break, trade deadline and the games.

This dynasty has improved since I last checked in, but passing on 2K10 was a grave mistake.

5 Game Recap

In this 5 game stretch, Denver played their first three at home, losing only to the LA Clippers (yet somehow wiping the floor with the Lakers). After also dropping a game to Toronto, Denver now sit 30-15. The focus game is against Detroit, with 3 former members of the Nuggets once contributing to the Pistons (Chauncey Billups, Ben Wallace, Arron Afflalo). Here's how it went

Denver wins in team effort

Even though Carmelo Anthony was the leading scorer with 17 points, he lead a team of 7 double digit scorers to win against Detroit 91-84. Amongst the scorers were players like Mario Chalmers (14), Chris Andersen (13), Earl Smith (11), Arron Afflalo (10) and Matt Bonner (10). Chauncey Billups was close to a double-double with 9 points and 9 assists.

On the Detroit side of things, they had 4 players in double digits, lead by Rodney Stuckey (19). However Denver proved to have too much firepower off the bench, easily outscoring their opposition bench. The other players in double digits were Tayshaun Prince (17), Chris Wilcox (12) and Charlie Villenueva (12).

For Denver, Chris Andersen notched up a double-double, with 10 rebounds to go with his 13 points, while Chris Wilcox got 12 rebounds with his 12 points. Sprite Performer of the game Tayshaun Prince was close to a double-double with 9 rebounds.

I'm glad to hear it's improved. As amazing as 2k10 looks, my dynasty was a big factor to me getting Live 10 again.

The way I think is, there's 12 players on my team, may as well try and use most of them :)... if that doesn't work, I have the firepower to be selfish with one of the players

All Star Announcement

Denver's starting five make the team

That's right, the entire starting 5 of Denver will be representing the West, with 4 of them getting a start... so who is the one relegated to the bench? It's Michael Beasley, who makes way for Pau Gasol in the starting lineup. It seems the Denver Nuggets winning ways have made them popular amongst the voters. A surprising omission though is that of last year's All-Star MVP Dirk Nowitzki.

WEST: [CENTER] Chris Andersen (Denver), [POWER FORWARD] Pau Gasol (LA Lakers), [SMALL FORWARD] Carmelo Anthony (Denver), [SHOOTING GUARD] Earl Smith III (Denver), [POINT GUARD] Chauncey Billups (Denver)

[THE BENCH] Yao Ming (Houston), Michael Beasley (Denver), Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City), Brandon Roy (Portland), Tony Parker (San Antonio), Kevin Martin (Sacramento), Kobe Bryant (LA Lakers)

EAST: [CENTER] Dwight Howard (Orlando), [POWER FORWARD] Amare Stoudemire (New Jersey), [SMALL FORWARD] Lebron James (Cleveland), [SHOOTING GUARD] Dwyane Wade (Miami), [POINT GUARD] Devin Harris (New Jersey)

[THE BENCH] Andrew Bogut (Milwaukee), Chris Bosh (Toronto), Rashard Lewis (Orlando), Joe Johnson (Atlanta), Mo Williams (Cleveland), Gilbert Arenas (Washington), Michael Redd (Milwaukee)

Aussie Andersen Makes Rookie Squad

No Denver representation in this game, but I thought it was noteworthy that Sacramento's Dave Andersen made the starting lineup for the rookies.

ROOKIES: [CENTER] Bart Harvey (Sacramento), [POWER FORWARD] David Andersen (Sacramento), [SMALL FORWARD] Joe Hunt (Memphis), [SHOOTING GUARD] Stanley Alston (Oklahoma City), [POINT GUARD] Reuben Walker (Miami)

[THE BENCH] C Paul Leroy (Portland), PG Augustine Garrick (LA Lakers), C Brice Bradford (Dallas), SF Darren Sullivan (Phoenix)

SOPHOMORE: [CENTER] Hasheem Thabeet (Memphis), [POWER FORWARD] Blake Griffin (LA Clippers), [SMALL FORWARD] Austin Daye (Portland), [SHOOTING GUARD] Wayne Ellington (Minnesota), [POINT GUARD] Brandon Jennings (Milwaukee)

[THE BENCH] Stephen Curry (Golden State), Demar Derozen (Toronto), Jrue Holiday (Philadelphia), James Johnson (Chicago)

---------------------------------------------------

Once again, a fairly lopsided All-star team for the Nuggets. I have changed the simulated minutes now, but I only did that recently. Either way it'll make for an entertaining game I'm sure.

I was really surprised about Birdman and Beasley. I mean, Birdman's stats would suggest he's the defensive player of the year, but usually that doesn't assure you an all-star game.

As for New Jersey, they're one of the contenders in the East at the moment (hard to believe). Them and Oklahoma City and the two biggest improvers from last year. Some off-season acquisitions could be thanked for that (Rudy Gay, Joel Pzybillia, Stephen Jackson to OKC, Amare Stoudemire and Luke Ridnour to NJ), along with a core of players with great potential.

As promised, here are the results of the 3 games before the All-star break.

DEN@PHI: 84-74 W
DEN@ORL: 70-65 W
DEN@HOU: 82-75 W

Here's the feature game versus the Orlando Magic:

Denver prevail in low scoring encounter

Image

In a game that would be a true test of Denver's championship credentials, the Nuggets managed to overcome the reigning champions 70-65. One player on each team scored 20 plus points (Earl Smith 24, Jameer Nelson 22). However, the next highest scorer in the game was Carmelo Anthony with only 13 points. It's amazing that what could be seen as an off night for him still lands him amongst the top scorers, as well as a Sprite Performer of the Game Award.

Michael Beasley and Mario Chalmers both added 11 each, while for the Magic, Rasheed Wallace and Vince Carter added 10 each. Both Beasley (11 points, 11 rebounds) and Rasheed Wallace (10 points, 10 rebounds) registered a double-double.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
DEN@ORL

DEN: 70 (Smith 24, Anthony 13, Beasley 11, Chalmers 11)
ORL: 65 (Nelson 22, Wallace 10, Carter 10)

Sprite Performer of the Game: Carmelo Anthony 13 points 5 rebounds 4 assists

Rebounds

DEN: Andersen, Beasley 11
ORL: Howard 11

Assists

DEN: Andersen, Anthony 4
ORL: Lewis 4
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next 5 games after the All-star Weekend

@HOU
@SAN
ATL
BOS
CLE

-Feature game will be against Boston.

-Before the All-Star break, Denver are 33-15. Hopefully the momentum can continue afterwards.

All Star Weekend in Arlington Texas

The weekend that everyone looks forward to on the calendar. The Sophomores looking to take the Rookies to school... and the main event, East VS West, or as it's been dubbed this year by a few fellow forum members: East Vs Denver.

Sophomores roll the rookies

81-65
MVP: Stephen Curry (19 points, 11 assists)

Image

Unfortunately I quit out of this game after it ended, thinking I could get the box score on my calendar, but alas, it doesn't work that way with all-star weekend games. Blake Griffin was the highest scorer with 24 points. The Rookies made an early surge through Reuben Walker and Stanley Alston, but the resistance was short lived. The Sophomores dominated on the boards, with Thabeet recording 10 rebounds before the first half was even finished.

Sorry there wasn't a more in depth report, but rest assured, the All-star game won't disappoint.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

West win in overtime

Image
Image

In one of the most dramatic All-Star games, the Western All-Stars won by 3 points in overtime.

It was to be known as the game with the Denver Nuggets starting 5, however West coach Byron Scott was reluctant to use any of them, with the exception of Carmelo Anthony. As soon as he had the opportunity, he decided to sub on the regulars like Kobe Bryant, Yao Ming and Tony Parker. Yao managed to finish with 14 boards in the game, but he was restricted to 4 points, as was Pau Gasol. While Tony Parker got 12 points for the game, the main focal point was Carmelo Anthony.

The usual all-stars weren't working for Byron Scott, as the West were down by 8. With 2 minutes left to go in the game came a true All-star moment. Byron Scott put all 5 Denver Nugget players on the floor, and they managed to erase the deficit down to two. With less than 10 seconds to go, Carmelo Anthony hit a clutch shot to level the game. Devin Harris of the Eastern All-Stars had a chance to win it, but missed the shot just inside the arc.

In the overtime period, both teams struggled for ascendency. Carmelo Anthony would extend upon his MVP game by ending up with 33 points in the game. 3 points behind, Devin Harris once again had the clutch shot to take from 3 point land. In what could be seen as one of the biggest errors in All-Star history, Chris Andersen fouled his shot, sending Harris to the line with 3 free throws, in which he made. With the scores even, the West had one last play, and here it is:

Expect anything less from Chauncey Billups?

------------------------------------------------------------------

EAST VS WEST

WEST: 98 (Anthony 33, Parker 12, Smith 11, Andersen 10)
EAST: 95 (Harris 30, James 20, Howard 18, Wade 13)

MVP: Carmelo Anthony 33 points 4 rebounds 4 assists

Rebounds

WEST: Yao 14
EAST: Howard 14

Assists

WEST: Gasol 4
EAST: Harris 4
-----------------

Denver All-stars

Chris Andersen (10 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks)
Michael Beasley (6 points 1 rebound)
Carmelo Anthony (33 points 4 rebounds 4 assists)
Earl Smith III (11 points 1 steal)

Sounds like the all star game was exiting to play. Interesting that Pau Gasol was leading in assists for the West. Plus great shot by Billups for the win. :D
