Now that it's happening, I'm kind of torn. As much as I'd like to see some of these dunks attempted in the NBA slam dunk contest rather than capes, phone booths and green basketballs (I know, I know, but I still can't say it enough) letting non-NBA players into an NBA event seems to defeat the purpose of it being an event for NBA players. At the same time, it will be interesting to see what happens and how badly the NBA players get shown up.

Whoa.

Like Andrew, I'm kind of torn as well. Though the dunk contest finally got interesting again, seeing that it's non-NBA players being the cause of it kind of ruins the whole point of an NBA Slam Dunk Contest. But at the same time, I can't wait to see Mr. TFB and Air Up There whoop the likes of LeBron and Nate. Also, I'm kind of confused at this as well. Out of these ten finalists, four will move on to compete in the Dunk Contest? Doesn't that fill all the spots available? Or willl the NBA have more than four in the contest like they've done in previous years?

Well first As i know Nate will not be in the 2010 Nba slam dunk Contest,And i guess yeah,They will probably have like 7~ Dunkers in the contest i think.Because if there could only be 4 dunkers in the contest And all of them From TFB,Then WTF?
And i really think that NBA Dunkers will be so embarrassed.Though i don't think we saw all the stuff that NBA Highflyers can do.

EDIT: Hmm,And what if the Fans will have to Vote again. Then Probably LeBron Would win the contest,Judges would vote For Someone like LeBron too,Wonder how it works out.I Mean this is NBA,They will not let Some Street Dunkers Beat Them.NBA is becoming such a crap.I Loved The NBA In 2000.

I'm hoping they get rid of the fan voting for the winner as well. Otherwise, even if Guy Dupuy or Air Up There pulled off a 720 windmill-between the legs twice-off the backboard-over an Aston Martin, LeBron would still win. And yeah, the dunk contest back in 2000 was probably one of the best. Pretty much 2000, 2003 and possibly 2005 were the best dunk contests of this decade.

I think it's great because TFB really brings the athletic dunks back to the table. That raises the bar for the NBA dunkers. Hopefully they don't choose to use theatrics like the NBAers in the recent dunk contests. I think it can only be a good thing, something that can get TFB more exposure and possibly some looks at being on an NBA squad, and give the NBA players more of a challenge to step up and work for it. If those fail, then the only thing left that could motivate the players to compete and want to win is more money for the victor.

I don't think there i anything wrong with TFB competing in the dunk contest. They already have a celebrity game, and a shootout with WNBA players, so I don't think there is a problem with using TFB in the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown. It's fucking entertainment, guys. Enjoy it because it might be the only time it ever happens.

LeBron got up on live/national TV in front of millions and tried to draw all the attention away from the dunkers and onto him by declaring he'd be in the next dunk comp. If he backs out now because he's worried about being beaten by a group of street players then he's a fucking bitch who should be traded to the Clippers.

Fair call. I guess they need to at least try it at least once, I'm interested to see how it will turn out. It'll be pretty embarrassing if the TFB guys do something absolutely ridiculous and then an NBA player pulls off their jersey to reveal a Hardwood Classic before attempting something pedestrian...and an even bigger farce if they score higher.

Agreed, even if they weren't inviting those guys to qualify for the dunk contest I'd abolish the fan voting. I don't mind the concept of fan voting per se, I think it's fine for the All-Star selections (no worse than some of the coach's selections in many cases) but it kind of defeats the purpose of having judges.

More and more I've been thinking about it, this is going to either Make or Kill the NBA dunk contest.

If the NBA players get embarrassed, and with those dunkers....they will, I actually think they will kill off the contest since that is some bad publicity. But if the NBA players rise to the challenge and legitimately beat TFB in a dunk contest? I'll be hooked for a few more years for sure.

One way the NBA could do this is have 8 participants and 2 brackets. The 4 amateurs go against each other and get a winner. And the 4 NBAers go at it and get a winner. Then have the 2 winners finish the night off in one final round.
Opinions are my own.

I like this idea. I'm not sure whether it's realistic or not, but it would be exciting. Although it would be better if there would be 8 dunkers and 2 brackets, as you said, but 4 of them would advance to the next round and then it would be like the regular dunk contest, imo. Otherwise TFB guys would get all the attention, and there is no way that the NBA might allow that.

well as far as we all know TFB's participation in the Dunk Contest might be an entirely different contest.

The NBA might just stick them out on the outdoor HORSE court and let TNT do a Saturday afternoon contest with them

A tournament format would be nice, Jon. Dunkers would go head to head and not have to worry about having the best dunk of a round, so their would be less pressure, imo.

Sounds like a good approach to me too. Of course...

...that could certainly be true too and if they want to keep the NBA contest filled with gimmicks, that's probably what they'll do.

That's what I thought the league might possibly do just to avoid the PR screwup of having an all-TFB dunk finals.

I guess it all boils down to the dunk judges again and not the actual dunks itself. I still can't forget how they 'robbed' Iggy in the dunk contest.

Not "they". Kenny Smith. And he must never judge a contest again.

That's just insane. If they do let these guys in the NBA contest, the NBA competitors are in trouble. Another angle here.

The dunk was sick and awesome. The crowd goes crazy, just like the 720 dunk thing

That was great. (Y) Another idea the NBA players should borrow so long as the dunk contest continues to have a mandatory "use a teammate" entry.

Finally, one of them does a double dunk

(last dunk in the video, windmill elbow dunk to start then double dunks it)

Just out of curiousity, is a double dunk allowed in the Slam Dunk contest?
