Old School Basketball

Fri Dec 05, 2003 2:56 pm

Here is a question, what do you miss from the old style of basketball that you have rarely nowadays.

1. Big time rivalries like Lakers and the Celtics (Bird vs Magic)
2. 7 footers starting at center unlike now you have guys like Marshall, Swift, Ratliff.
3. The Big time Centers like the Admiral, The Dream Olajuwon, Robert Parrish, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Bill Walton, Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, Bill Laimbeer. now the big ones you have is Shaq, Duncan and Garnett.
4. the balance between East and West, now all the power teams are from the West, hell if the Clippers and the Warriors played in the East, they could have made the playoffs.
5. the hair styles
6. the short shorts

I heard the shooting was awesome back in the old days...now it's all off-the-dribble dunks and flashy cross overs...

There isn't really much rivalry these days- look at Lakers-Spurs...that was nothing! Lakers-Kings say last year- never happened cause in 2002, a rivalry was neva talked about and could have occured if the teams beat their second- round opponents...but it never happened!

7-footers playing the 2/3 is pretty weird!

And the balance of power between East/West should be even...and there aren't many quality big men left!

I dont think the shooting has gotten that bad, i just think the game has eveolved and teams play alot better defense. As for some of the rest... I dont think ive ever seen a 7 footer play the 2 guard spot, sit. kg and dirk somtime play the sf position, but im yet to see them at the 2. And the east/ west will level out.. one day...

I kinda messed the rivalries in the past...I use to always love to watch a Knicks vs. Heat game since you knew it would be close and a good game to watch. Now a days there isn't many rivalries remaining...people try to make them up now basicaly based on there rating but when the games ae blowouts ( ex- lakers vs. pacers) it really aint a rivalry.

And the shooting now a days suck. Everyone is coming out so prematurely and never really ge a chance to learn the feudamental skills you need...if you can dunk good or got nice dribbling skills, basically you can make it to any team

Then why dont you do air alert and just practice dribbling? You're bound to make it to the nba one day...

on the scoring i agree with NBA_Fan_23, the D is definetly better now that it was bak then, think about it, with all the new facilitys and specialized shooting coaches ur telling me players used to shooot better 20 or even 10 years ago? Na.. its the D, now we have all the replayes and everyone know everyone now, everyone knows eachother moves.
the 24 sec clock definetly does not help the shooting but now u cant say that anyone is realy unstopable... Not even Shaq, i watch his games and yes teams stop him, sometimes he makes it seem as though hes unstopabe but hes not, and D is the big part of that.

Players play so much D that they are too tired to put up a good shot, and the GMs and diff now too, bak then is u were a team player u had a very good chance to stay on the team especialy if u build a team chemistry, now unless ur stats are good u will get kicked off..

it is way balance out in the old times...except when Jordon decided to dominate...the teams were good...more fundamentally sound..more chemistry like Malone and Stockton,Jordon and Pipen..Magic,Kareem...etc...they play with more emotion and doesn't care that much about money..they play for the love of the game mostly...

the shooting percentages are only down a notch from wat they were in the good ol days,
the only difference is the pace of the game now..
teams using the shotclock then shooting with like 4-5secs left,
while before it was rebound, run, then try to score..
more possessions = more points

just a lil theory, wat do i know

but yeh, i do miss when the 7footer on the team would be the centre, duncan and nowitzki should be centres, but dirk is soft hence prefers to take shots then bang inside... Duncan i dunno why he doesn't play centre, I guess just cause he's used to playing Pf now :?

Another thing that is missing , is point guards who actually know how to set up things, and get open shots for teammates instead of being the ballhog on the team . Looking to score 1st then if they get the ball back, then look for a team mate...

lottery rookies that actually had immediate impact on their respective teams... cut down the high school and international draft picks... PLEASE!!!
not every high school and foreign players are kobe/kg/tmac and dirk/yao/peja. i think the last good nba draft was 1999, the year with elton brand, steve francis, baron davis, rip hamilton, etc...

by the way, the best thing about the 90's besides mj was healthy grant hill and penny hardaway... at least to me. remember "the pennys" (the shoes)? pennys were the next hottest thing after the jordans... they even had awesome commercials with lil penny... damn... and grant hill was the MAN... that man could do anything. he was one of the top 3 hottest players in the mid-90's. i think he even led the league in all-star voting one year...

cant say enuff about 90's basketball... too bad i wasnt old enough to experience 70's and 80's hoops; but i know for sure, today's hoops cant even compare with what they had back in the 90's. belie dat

this year is the best draft in a long time imo, with lebron, carmelo, and almost every pick that is getting some love, is producing,
darko has emerged as the guy detroit goes to finish off games now.

The 1999 draft, wasn't that strong imo, baron didn't get no pt, only decent players straight out of the box were brand and francis whom received rookie of the year honours, the rest of the players made names for themselves in their sophmore seasons..

but i could be wrong.

I miss real basketball(the way the Knicks of the early 70's, Magic's Lakers, Bird's Celtics, Dr.J's Sixers & Walton's Blazers used to play). Each team was a finely-tuned unit.
