David Lee just could not be contained

NEW ORLEANS (AP) – After taking on the likes of Andrew Bynum and Pau Gaosl in the first round, David Lee could sure get used to playing against the undersized New Orleans Hornets.

In Seattle’s second straight blowout win, Lee scored 33 points; missing only one shot all night and tying his season high points total in the first half. In addition to that, Lee held his opponent David West to just 10 points, two nights after West scored 20. “I came out wanting to play even better than I did in Game 1. I was in foul trouble early in that game so tonight I really wanted to stay out of that but also attack,” Lee said.

It wasn’t all Lee however as rookie Reshawn Tyson once again stepped up and delivered 15 points and 5 assists. Tyson was so good in Game 1 that George Karl handed him the assignment on trying to slow down Chris Paul again. Tyson delivered and Paul reached just 10 points on 3 for 17 shooting from the field.

“I know that when I was in college, I was a bit lazy,” Tyson stated, “But I’m a different ball player now. Everyone’s acting all surprised that I can actually play defence.”

Seattle’s bench was instrumental in the Game 2 win with Adam Morrison scoring 11, Jeff Green on 9, Sebastian Telfair finishing with 8, and Trevor Ariza adding 7. “It was a total team effort tonight,” Stealth Coach George Karl told reporters after the game, “My bench was so good that my starters actually didn’t have to do much.”

The veteran coach was totally correct as a look down the box score reveals that Kevin Durant, Jason Kidd, and Brad Miller did not play more than half the game. Durant, injured with a strained MCL, scored 5 points, Kidd had 4 points and 6 assists, while Miller swatted 2 shots.

Mike James played plenty of minutes once again as Paul was in foul trouble early. James delivered with 21 points after missing 8 three pointers in Game 1. “I came out a lot more focused and took better shots,” the substitute PG said, “And they were dropping.” James Posey added 17 points of his own.

New Orleans actually started the game out strong, setting the tone after a Leon Powe offensive rebound and dunk. They were up 6-0 early in the quarter but did not stand a chance after Seattle came out of a time out. The Stealth went on a 15-0 run; David Lee scoring the first 9 points on a flurry of spin moves and pop up jumpers over David West. The Hornets tried to slow down their opponents and edged their way back into the game, cutting the lead to as few as 5 points. Stealth reserve Ariza would have none of it and forced three turnovers in a row, leading to two fast break buckets. The Hornets’ frustration saw them foul on the final two Stealth possessions with the Stealth players not missing a free throw and closing out the first period with a 13 point lead.

The affair did not get any better for the Hornets as the Stealth continued to race into the lead by margins of 20 points. New Orleans refused to be left in the dust at home and thanks to good shooting in the middle two quarters, the Hornets stuck with the Stealth; even if they trailed by double digits.

Entering the final quarter, the Stealth were up by 15 points, and that was the signal for George Karl to let his bench play out the final period. With Telfair running the point, Green and Ariza at the wings, and Chris Wilcox and Rocky Akonnor down low; the Stealth reserves won that final quarter 22-14.

“I was encouraged by the effort of my bench tonight,” Karl said, “They played hard and kept on pushing the margin up. Their defense was also terrific.” Karl also praised his front court for their efforts in protecting the paint, “It’s really important for us not to let any easy shots get through and I’m very happy with the effort of my big men.” Rookie C Akonnor had 4 blocks, Jamaal Magloire had 2, and Miller added 2.

The series returns to Seattle for Game 3 tomorrow.

Notes: Lee’s highest scoring game with Seattle was during the regular season in which he scored 27. He had 27 first half points tonight… There was plenty of action from the away team much to the disappointment of the home crowd. Tyson, Ariza, and Green threw down a handful of dunks but were booed by the Hornets’ faithful… On one play, Tyson went up for a layup that spun on the rim but refused to drop. As it came down off the rim, Tyson went up over David West and grabbed the offensive board and immediately got back up for a dunk… Green would do something similar, grabbing his own miss and converting a fall-away jumper in the final quarter… This is the second game in which Seattle has held New Orleans to 81 points…

Nuggets Square Series

DENVER (AP) – After a heartbreaking overtime loss in Game 1, the Denver Nuggets regrouped and delivered a 100-95 win in Game 2. The Nuggets’ starters were poor as Billups scored just 15 points but did have 9 assists. Carmelo Anthony and Andrew Watson were both in foul trouble. Anthony finished with 13 and Watson had 8. That left the work to their backups JR Smith and Bobby Jackson. The pair delivered when it mattered with Smith scoring a game high 24 and Jackson finishing with 21 points and 6 assists. The two of them combined for eight three pointers including one by Jackson that put the team ahead by 3 with less than a minute remaining.

Carlos Boozer had another strong match with 22 points and 6 assists. Brandon Roy had 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists. Steve Nash finished with 15 points and 5 assists while Travis Outlaw chipped in 15. The Nuggets now head to Portland with the series tied at 1-1.

Celtics Win High Scoring Game 2

DETROIT (AP) – On any other night, the Detroit Pistons would have been winners. Celtics stars Ray Allen and Paul Pierce struggled; Allen had 12 points and Pierce 10. The Pistons can thank Kevin Garnett for doing more than his share on both ends of the floor as Detroit faltered 120-108 to Boston. Garnett was all over the floor and box score as he picked up 36 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 6 blocks, and 2 steals. He was 15 for 21 from the field.

Rip Hamilton made up for a poor shooting performance in game 1, where he scored just 5 points, by scoring 23 in Game 2. Allen Iverson had 22 and 6 assists, Rasheed Wallace had 19 and 8 rebounds, while Luther Head scored 17 from off the bench.

Hawks Comeback Too Little, Too Late

ATLANTA (AP) – Atlanta need to play with more urgency, according to Josh Smith as the Hawks face a daunting task of winning their next two games in Miami. Joe Johnson led all scorers with 25 points, Ben Gordon added 15 and Al Horford put up 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Hawks looked sloppy in the first half and relied on a fourth quarter collapse from the Miami Heat to get back into the match.

Dwyane Wade was great early on but struggled in the stretch. Wade finished the game with 24 points and 6 assists. He was ably supported by Mario Chalmers’ 18 points, 6 assists, and Michael Beasley’s 16 points and 8 rebounds.

SEATTLE (AP) – The New Orleans Hornets tried desperately hard to stay one step ahead of the Seattle Stealth. Lady luck seemed to be on their side as they hit three point shot after three point shot and thanks to poor free throw shooting from the hosts, the Hornets looked like they would pull off an away win. Unfortunately for New Orleans, Reshawn Tyson would not have any of it.

Seattle charged ahead at the beginning of the game but, characteristic of the game overall, New Orleans stunted that momentum with a big scoring run. A 15-4 run in the middle of the first quarter saw New Orleans take control of the match. New Orleans continued with their great shooting and looked to be in great position in the second quarter, leading by double digits. Kevin Durant and Jeff Green acted as inspiration to the home side as the duo helped Seattle close the second half with their team trailing by just three points, 60-57.

On the back of some creative ball work from Chris Paul, who had 28 points and 19 assists, New Orleans led by as much as 16 points midway through the third quarter. That was when Tyson stepped up and delivered once again in this playoff series.

Tyson started with a three pointer from near the sideline, and then had a steal and breakaway dunk. Later, he would rebound at the defensive end and complete a coast to coast layup to the delight of the home crowd. He went on to score 16 third quarter points including a game tying three pointer with 33 seconds remaining in the third quarter. His jumper as time expired gave Seattle an 84-82 lead heading into the final break.

“Reshawn was amazing tonight,” Jason Kidd, who had 19 assists, said, “There aren’t many players who can do what he just did. He is really showing us how good he could really be one day.”

Tyson’s influence on the game was so great even though Seattle came into the final period without him joining them. It didn’t matter as the Stealth used the momentum created by the rookie to go on a scoring run and extend their lead to 95-85 after a matter of minutes.

The Hornets would pull as close as 5 points but Durant put the team on his back to put the game out of reach for the visiting side. His three point play and subsequent dunk put Seattle ahead 111-99 with 1:33 to play. Durant then forced Paul into a turnover with 1:11 to go and Brad Miller’s hook shot put the result out of doubt with 1:01 left and the Stealth holding a 113-99 lead.

Tyson finished the game with 28 points; 22 of them coming in the second half. Durant, still playing hurt, had a quiet 21 points, and David Lee scored 19 points; 14 in the first quarter. Chris Paul had help from his fellow starters with the entire Hornets’ starting five scoring in double figures.

Notes: Rocky Akonnor was once again singled out by Coach George Karl. The rookie big man had 3 rebounds and 3 blocks in the third quarter and was cited as a big reason for Seattle’s comeback… The Stealth have now kept New Orleans from scoring in triple figures during the whole series… The Hornets were 14 for 14 at the free throw line, Seattle were not themselves as they went 9 for 18… Seattle can close out the series in the next game at home…

Pistons Down Celtics 110-109

BOSTON (AP) – A spirited effort from the whole team saw the Detroit Pistons make a final quarter comeback after trailing by 14 points leading into the fourth quarter of Game 3. Rip Hamilton led eight players in double figures with 21 points, including the game winning bucket at the buzzer to help the Pistons cut the Celtics’ advantage on the series to 2-1.

Kevin Garnett was once again dominant with his double double of 27 points and 11 rebounds. Ray Allen added 27 while Paul Pierce had 21 points and 8 assists.

Other Pistons in double figures were Walter Hermann (15), Aaron Afflalo (14), Luther Head (13), Jason Maxiell (12), Sasha Vujacic (12), Rasheed Wallace (11), and Maurice Evans (10). Playing without their leader, Allen Iverson, the Pistons seem confident heading into Game 4 with Rasheed Wallace stating, “We’re going to tie things up. We showed tonight that we’re not just a one man team.”

Allen Iverson Injured

DETROIT (AP) – In a huge blow for the Detroit Pistons’ championship chances, Allen Iverson has been sidelined by lower back strain, sustained in the Pistons’ Game 2 loss against the Boston Celtics. Iverson has been advised to sit out 1-2 weeks, putting his team’s chances of advancing in serious doubt.

The veteran SG is averaging a team high 21.6 ppg for the playoffs. He is adding 5 apg, 1.9 spg, and is shooting at impressive percentages; .500 from the field and .444 from the three point line. Iverson did not travel to Boston with his team.

Heat Hold Hawks To 68 Points

MIAMI (AP) – The Miami Heat are on the verge of sweeping the second seeded Atlanta Hawks after putting in a determined defensive effort in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semi-final. “We came out and decided that if we want to win, we have to play defence,” Dwyane Wade said. Wade finished with 17 points and 8 assists in the Heat’s 84-68 win. Mario Chalmers was Miami’s second best with 12 points on a night where both teams struggled to score.

Joe Johnson scored 22 points and Ben Gordon added 11. “We were not good enough and we really have our backs against the wall now,” Josh Smith who had a forgettable night stated, “We’re a better team than what we showed.”

Blazers Rout Nuggets 101-88

PORTLAND (AP) – The Portland Trailblazers’ frontcourt looked happy to be back home as they dominated their Nuggets’ counterparts. Nene and Kenyon Martin were both scoreless in the affair as they watched helplessly as Carlos Boozer, Greg Oden, and sixth man LeMarcus Aldridge dominate.

Boozer finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds, Oden had 15 and 10, while Aldridge chipped in 15. Steve Nash and Travis Outlaw each scored 14 points as Brandon Roy added 12 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals.

Carmelo Anthony scored 22 points, Andrew Watson had 15, and Chauncey Billups added 14 points and 8 rebounds. The trio were unlucky that their big men could not make their mark on the game and neither did their usually high octane bench combination of Bobby Jackson and JR Smith. Denver now trails 1-2 in the 7 game series.
