I remember we played Duke during the season and you could tell that he was going to be a star one day.”

TEAM REPORT

When Marvin Williams, acquired by Detroit for Tayshaun Prince last season, opted to jump ship and return to the Atlanta Hawks; many thought Detroit would not have what it took to stay at the top of the NBA. However, the team has surprised many as they lead the Eastern Conference and look set to make one last collective step towards an elusive NBA championship.

With former stars Allen Iverson, Rip Hamilton, and Rasheed Wallace at the twilight of their careers; the Pistons are desperate to make the most of their chances. “We don’t have much left in the tank so might as well make the most of it,” Wallace bluntly stated earlier in the season when asked of the team’s playoffs chances, “If everything comes together, I think we have what it takes to win it all.”

The defensive minded Pistons aren’t spectacular on offence but are stifling at the other end. “Getting AI last season,” Rip said, “We tried to up the tempo but that didn’t work too well. This season we went back to basics and decided to slow it all down.”

The move to playing a slower game has helped Detroit immensely as they are able to stick with their opponents. When the ball game is close, they then put the ball in Iverson’s hands - who is still able to take over games.

Former Houston Rocket Luther Head has also been a revelation for the side. Head was signed to fill out the roster but has surprised many as he is posting career highs across the boards. It is Head and Sahsa Vujacic’s shooting that has the team looking like strong title contenders. “We have a good team,” Hamilton says, “We have one of the best defenses in the league and we shoot well as a team. We are pretty tough to beat because we all have each other’s backs.”

Mid-season signing Trevor Ariza was a major factor

SEATTLE (AP) – In the past, when Kevin Durant did not score 30 points; Seattle would find it tough to even come close to winning games. In their latest game against Washington, Durant only scored 12. The Stealth still defeated the Wizards. What’s more? Durant did not have an off-night, he just didn’t need to score 30.

“I think I could get used to this,” the NBA’s leading scorer smiles, “It was a true team effort tonight and I’m glad that we are finally showing everyone how good we are.”

Two nights after falling to the Houston Rockets by three points, behind a Durant 35 point effort, Seattle’s George Karl ripped through his team and demanded that the whole side step up. What Karl said worked wonders as his two stars, Durant and Jason Kidd, were able to take much deserved rest during long stretches of the game. Durant sat out the whole fourth quarter while Kidd had minimal court time, he finished with 6 points and 6 assists.

“I’m old and I need to get ready for the playoffs,” Kidd half-joked, “It’s about time the younger guys played their fair share.”

Seattle opened the game with a 15-3 run and despite Washington closing the gap to single digits the rest of the way; Seattle looked in complete control. The home side was able to play all of the players on their roster; with everyone getting on the score sheet as well. “This is what I want,” Coach Karl said after the game, “If we want to get further than the first round (in the playoffs) then everyone has to pull their weight. Tonight, I was pleased with the effort of my players.”

Brad Miller made fans forget that David Lee was missing. Miller led the team with a season high 21 points and Jeff Green added 14. Recently signed Trevor Ariza was a stud for the Stealth, as he twice kept the team from falling to a surging Wizards outfit. In the second quarter, Washington had made a push to come within a point of Seattle but Ariza had back to back dunks to put the momentum back in Seattle’s favor. His fourth quarter heroics would help fuel a spectacular team run to win the game in the final quarter.

A Kidd steal and subsequent fast break layup set the stage for Ariza to pull off seven straight points. Chris Wilcox’s layup and Kidd’s jumper put the home team ahead by 15 with 4:13 remaining before Karl subbed out the rest of his starters; replacing them with his bench. Ariza, Reshawn Tyson, and Green each scored buckets of their own to keep the visiting team at bay. Green’s layup with 1:58 left made certain that the win was in Seattle’s hands.The Stealth bench continued their handiwork to the end of the game with Rocky Akonnor tipping in a DJ White miss at the buzzer.

One of the keys to Seattle’s big win was their stifling defense, in particular their work on the Washington backcourt. Gilbert Arenas was the main victim of repeated double teaming and constant ball pressure; the Wizards star finished with 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 11 assists but shot a paltry 2 for 13 from the field including going 0 for 5 from three point range. Arenas also had 7 turnovers. Swingman Deshawn Stevenson finished with 10 points and 5 assist but shot 5 for 20 from the field.

“Seattle played really good on defence and really stopped us from being productive,” Caron Butler said, “That is why they have a winning record and if we are to make the postseason, we need to play like them.”

Notes: Seattle was able to play all 12 of their players during this match. In contrast, Washington only had 8 players make it onto the floor… Sebastian Telfair made plenty of dazzling plays on his way to a team high 9 assists; one of them was a no look pass that would have made it on Sportscentre if Brad Miller did not miss his open look… David Lee is expected to return in the team’s next game against the Spurs…

Kevin Durant knocks down a pull up jumper to win it

SEATTLE (AP) – Kevin Durant can tell his team mates that they are lucky he hit a shot at the buzzer to win their latest game. George Karl had ripped his team for their ‘lack of effort and intensity’ on the defensive end and also for letting a huge lead slip away early in the game.

Durant answered by scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter while Stealth captain Jason Kidd also had 11 and David Lee scored 8. “We’re lucky that our main guys stepped up in that last quarter,” Karl said, “And I guess we were lucky that Iguodala got benched.”

In a baffling move, the Sixers benched their All-Star Andre Iguodala for much of the last quarter especially after he had engineered his team’s run to get back in the game in the second and third quarters. Iguodala talked briefly about his benching after the game, “Coach knows best. I will let him do his job and he will let me do mine.”

Iguodala was a star for the Sixers as he racked up 26 points on 12 for 15 shooting. Thaddeus Young added 24 and Elton Brand had 21. Willie Green chipped in 10 points from off the bench.

Samuel Dalembert put in a spirited effort as he played the majority of the second half with a heavily sprained ankle. He finished with 12 points to his name and a number of key plays down the stretch.

Durant led Seattle with 31 points and 8 assists. Kidd finished the game with 20 points, 8 assists and a season high 6 steals. Lee enjoyed a modest all-around game; 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.

The Sixers took their first lead of the game late in the third quarter and did not relinquish it until the final stages of the game. Jason Kidd’s long jumper with 2:33 left pulled the Stealth within one point of the Sixers. Iguodala and Lee scored for their respective teams before Kidd hit a big shot with 1:55 remaining. Kidd’s three pointer bounched up from the front of the rim and fell back into the hoop, giving his side a 2 point lead; 108-110.

Dalambert, playing on a hurt ankle, dunked to tie the game and Iguodala scored on a layup attempt after two Durant misses on the other end. Jeff Green, who had a relatively quiet night, scored a wide open jumper to tie the game at 112. With 50 seconds left, the Sixers bench was protesting a goaltending called on Dalambert. He then converted on the other end with another dunk but that effort was cancelled out by Durant’s twisting reverse layup. After a series of misses, Kidd was able to cut through the Sixers’ defense and score on a layup, right in front of the hoop. Kidd’s shot gave his team a 2 point lead, 114-116, with 15 seconds left.

One of the leading Sixth Man of the Year candidates, Rafer Alston, then scored on a layup with 4 seconds left in the game to tie the game up. Seattle would then call a timeout to discuss who would get the last shot. “We knew it was going to Kevin (Durant),” Igudola claims after the game.

And the ball did go to the NBA’s leading scorer; Durant did not disappoint as he calmly dribbled to his left and sunk the game winning shot from near the left elbow. With 0.7 reading on the clock, the Stealth had a 116-118 advanatge.

Notes: Kidd’s 6 steals tied his career high… Philadelphia’s Vlad Radmanovic had a bad ‘twist of faith’ as he entered the game for the first time and came off without playing even a minute. He sprained his ankle as he went to grab a rebound during Durant’s free throw attempt. He had entered the game before Durant took his second shot and was helped off the court after Durant made it…

Adam Morrison hit a wide open three at the buzzer

UTAH (AP) – Seattle Head Coach George Karl has not been happy with his team’s effort on the defensive end recently and the Stealth tried to make amends against the Jazz. Had it not been for Utah making a collective 17 three pointers; the Stealth could have made a big statement.

Utah’s Morris Almond led his side with 25 points; hitting 7 treys. Mehmet Okur had three of his own long range shots on his way to 22 points and the Jazz clawed their way back in what was becoming a blow out against the visiting team. “We were down by a lot of points and Seattle always stayed in front by at least 10 points,” star PG Deron Williams said, “But I guess no basketball game is lost before the final buzzer.”

Williams was held to just 6 points on 3 for 14 shooting from the field; he is currently averaging 22.1 ppg for the season. He also added 7 assists. “The plan was to take him (Williams) out of the game and it worked wonders,” Coach Karl stated, “But once Utah started hitting shots from the outside, they made it a contest. I can’t blame my team’s effort because those shots the Jazz had were taking weren’t what I would call good shots.”

When told that the Seattle coach thought his team’s win was lucky, Williams stated, “Well, in basketball you need a bit of luck to win.” He also vowed never to play so poorly again.

Kevin Durant was his team’s top performer. The All-Star racked up a total of 25 points. Jeff Green added 21, Jason Kidd had 13 and 8 assists, while reserve F Trevor Ariza scored all 11 of his points in the second quarter.

Seattle’s recent success with getting their big men the ball did not play out in this win as both Brad Miller and David Lee went scoreless. Miller did finish with a season high 12 rebounds though, along with 4 blocks and 3 assists. Lee had 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

Seattle started the game on a tear and their scoring prowess showed as the team reached leads of up to 17 points throughout the first half. Utah used a barrage of three pointers to chip at the visitor’s lead, culminating in their first lead of the game midway through the third quarter.

With scores very close entering the final quarter, Seattle began to pull away, and Utah found themselves down by 10 with 4 minutes left. Andrei Kirilenko, who had 12 points and 8 rebounds, had a dunk which was followed by a Corey Brewer trey with 1:55 left on the game clock. That pulled the Jazz within two points of the Stealth: 86-84.

Over the following minute, Jeff Green would hit four free throws but the jazz would not stay away; Kirlenko scoring on another dunk and Almond hitting a three to make it 90-89 with 1:09 left. Okur’s dunk was followed by Almond scoring on the fast break, and the Jazz would lead 90-93. Jamaal Magloire would then enter the game and score two clutch baskets to make the score 94-93 with 24.3 seconds remaining.

Almond continued with his game heroics by hitting a long range three with 14.3 left on the clock; the score increasing to 94-96. Rookie Reshawn Tyson went coast to coast and silenced the crowd with his dunk that tied the game with 10.7 seconds remaining. The Jazz’s own rookie, Brian Wingate, then had a dunk of his own with 6.7 seconds left and giving the Jazz a 2 point advantage.

Without any timeouts to call and the Jazz employing a full court press, Tyson was forced to bring the ball up. Sensing a trap near midcourt, he lobbed the ball to Magloire who found himself wide open in the lane. Instead of going for the game tying bucket, the veteran big man whipped a quick pass to Adam Morrison. Morrison, wide open on the baseline, then spotted up for a three point shot. The attempt was good as the buzzer sounded and the stadium was silent as Morrison pumped his fist in the air.

“That definitely felt good,” Morrison said.

Notes: Morrison hit a three pointer at the buzzer signaling the end of the first quarter. He caught the ball of an inbounds pass after the Jazz had just scored, took two dribbles and stopped two steps in front of the half way line, and let the shot go. After the ball swished through the hoop, pointed at a courtside Jazz fan and smiled… While the Jazz made 17 three pointers; Seattle only had a paltry 5 in comparison… Morrison has been Seattle’s hero on a number of occasions and hopes that he will be the player called upon to save the team if they are ever in a similar situation during the playoffs…
