As much as I thought The Passion of the Christ was a powerful movie, there are a lot of critics that go out their way to say there's unncessary violence. I think it depicts the suffering of Jesus in an accurate portrayal, though I'm not sure if the point of the movie is just to showcase his suffering rather than his love.
yeah theres a lot of criticism on the violence and anti-semitism in the movie, but what can i say? controversy is a consequence of great art. gibson told his story in an uncomprimising way.... not for the shock, but for the story. No one can come out of that movie, whether they liked it or not, without feeling sympathy, compassion, even guilt; you will finish the movie utterly and intensely exhausted. we as viewers have greater empathy with what we can see; and the greater the travesty, the greater the sympathy. I think the film was powerful. not everyone will like it, its almost an atmospheric experience, but i think its a great example of commercial high art.
