THE MYTH
Yinka Dare, a 7-1 center, is an awesome physical specimen who came into the NBA with only three years of organized basketball under his belt. This great man was also a playground legend in Ruckers park. He made 82 appearances and 82 starts in his second season with the Nets, that led to an all-star appearence. A native of Nigeria, he spent two years at George Washington University before declaring himself eligible for the NBA Draft, many people with knowlegde of basketball thought that Yinka was gonna come out his freshman season. Named Freshman of the Year by Sports Illustrated for 1992-93, he followed that up as a sophomore by pacing the nation in scoring, rebounding, blocked shots, and field-goal percentage. After two seasons he left college ranked No. 1 on George Washington's all-time points, rebounds, assist, steal, blocks, field goal percent, three point percent and free throw percent. Banking on the future, the New Jersey Nets selected Dare with the 14th overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft. It was a surprize because many thought that he was going to be the first overall pick. His first season yinka average 87.6 ppg 67.0 rpg 55.2 apg and 35.9 bpg

Yinka Dare, the New Jersey Nets' first-round draft pick in 1994, died on Jan. 9 from a heart attack due to an arrhythmia condition. The 32-year-old athlete was preparing breakfast after his morning workout when he collapsed.
Named Freshman of the Year by Sports Illustrated for 1992-93, the 7-foot, 265-pound Nigerian center led the George Washington Colonials to consecutive NCAA tournament appearances under coach Mike Jarvis.
Dare's rookie campaign in the NBA, however, was a disappointment. He started 1994 on the injured list, played one game, and went back on the list when he underwent surgery to his knees. During his four seasons with the Nets, Dare played 110 games, and averaged only 2.1 points and 2.6 rebounds
