SAN ANTONIO -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Spurs fanatics. I have some more tidbits here in the table for us to discuss. I'm doing a weekly report with things that happened around the league, including: in my opinion, the most interesting game of the week; signings & waivings; POTW honors; Power Rankings; injury report; All-Star voting and trading rumors. Hope you join the discussion!
• Brooks, K-Mart lead Rockets past shorthanded Celtics • Shaquille O'Neal and Nate Robinson were out, and an off-night by Ray Allen. No way the Boston Celtics would be able to stay with the up-and-coming Houston Rockets. But Tuesday night's game was not an embarrassment, just a 103-92 victory for Houston. The Rockets had four starters scoring in double figures, and double-doubles by their frontcourt. Luis Scola had his best night since the first days of December, with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Aaron Brooks scored a game-high 26 points and Kevin Martin added 20. Scola was 7-for-11 from the field, and Brooks 9-of-15. Jermaine O'Neal, starting in place of Shaq, had 15 for the Celtics, who lost 3 of their last 4 games, a mini-slump after posting a 10-game winning streak in December and 5-game winning streak to start this month. Allen didn't get his first field goal until 3:32 remained in the third quarter: he finished with 8 points in 2-of-13 shooting, both field goals made were 3-pointers. Paul Pierce led Boston with 23 points. Houston led by as many as 16 in the fourth, and is enjoying a 4-game winning streak, winning 9 of their last 10 contests.
• Derek Fisher announces his retirement • LA Lakers guard Derek Fisher has announced his retirement from the NBA this coming June. After being signed by the Lakers for a second run in July 2007, Fisher appeared in all 82 games this past 3 seasons, but only in 20 this year because of a broken arm. “After 15 wonderful years, I have decided to retire,” said Fisher, who was originally drafted in the first round (24th overall) of the 1996 NBA Draft by the Lakers. After the 2003–04 season, Fisher became a free agent and signed with the Golden State Warriors -- as the Lakers viewed him as a role player after the additions of veterans Gary Payton and Karl Malone. On July 2006, he was acquired by the Utah Jazz, and was voted President of the NBA Players Association. Most Jazz fans remember him for his shot against the Warriors in the '08 playoffs. “I am so grateful for being able to play for as long as I have and to have established long roots in Los Angeles. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the fans, and for all of their years of support. Since 1996, this 15 years have given me some of the fondest memories of my life. This is my last year.”
• Players of the Week • The Dallas Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki and the Chicago Bulls' Derrick Rose today were named the Western and Eastern Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played January 9 - 15. Nowitzki and the Mavs had a 0-3 week, but the German's numbers couldn't be ignored in all single-digit setbacks. Dallas lost to the Indiana Pacers, 118-117 in extra time, as Nowitzki scored 44 points, grabbed 14 boards, and also added two assists, two steals and two blocks to the mix. Nowitzki finished the week with averages of 30.6 points, 10.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. Chicago's Rose averaged 33.7 points along with 3.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists, as the Bulls posted a 2-2 week; including a surprising 102-97 win over league-best Miami Heat.
