    SAN ANTONIO -- Welcome to the latest installment of my “Morning Coffee” blog, Spurs fanatics. I have some more tidbits here in the table for us to discuss. I'm doing a weekly report with things that happened around the league, including: in my opinion, the most interesting game of the week; signings & waivings; POTW honors; Power Rankings; injury report; All-Star voting and trading rumors. Hope you join the discussion!

    Brooks, K-Mart lead Rockets past shorthanded CelticsShaquille O'Neal and Nate Robinson were out, and an off-night by Ray Allen. No way the Boston Celtics would be able to stay with the up-and-coming Houston Rockets. But Tuesday night's game was not an embarrassment, just a 103-92 victory for Houston. The Rockets had four starters scoring in double figures, and double-doubles by their frontcourt. Luis Scola had his best night since the first days of December, with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Aaron Brooks scored a game-high 26 points and Kevin Martin added 20. Scola was 7-for-11 from the field, and Brooks 9-of-15. Jermaine O'Neal, starting in place of Shaq, had 15 for the Celtics, who lost 3 of their last 4 games, a mini-slump after posting a 10-game winning streak in December and 5-game winning streak to start this month. Allen didn't get his first field goal until 3:32 remained in the third quarter: he finished with 8 points in 2-of-13 shooting, both field goals made were 3-pointers. Paul Pierce led Boston with 23 points. Houston led by as many as 16 in the fourth, and is enjoying a 4-game winning streak, winning 9 of their last 10 contests.

    Derek Fisher announces his retirement • LA Lakers guard Derek Fisher has announced his retirement from the NBA this coming June. After being signed by the Lakers for a second run in July 2007, Fisher appeared in all 82 games this past 3 seasons, but only in 20 this year because of a broken arm. “After 15 wonderful years, I have decided to retire,” said Fisher, who was originally drafted in the first round (24th overall) of the 1996 NBA Draft by the Lakers. After the 2003–04 season, Fisher became a free agent and signed with the Golden State Warriors -- as the Lakers viewed him as a role player after the additions of veterans Gary Payton and Karl Malone. On July 2006, he was acquired by the Utah Jazz, and was voted President of the NBA Players Association. Most Jazz fans remember him for his shot against the Warriors in the '08 playoffs. “I am so grateful for being able to play for as long as I have and to have established long roots in Los Angeles. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the fans, and for all of their years of support. Since 1996, this 15 years have given me some of the fondest memories of my life. This is my last year.”

    Players of the Week • The Dallas Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki and the Chicago Bulls' Derrick Rose today were named the Western and Eastern Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played January 9 - 15. Nowitzki and the Mavs had a 0-3 week, but the German's numbers couldn't be ignored in all single-digit setbacks. Dallas lost to the Indiana Pacers, 118-117 in extra time, as Nowitzki scored 44 points, grabbed 14 boards, and also added two assists, two steals and two blocks to the mix. Nowitzki finished the week with averages of 30.6 points, 10.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. Chicago's Rose averaged 33.7 points along with 3.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists, as the Bulls posted a 2-2 week; including a surprising 102-97 win over league-best Miami Heat.

    Power RankingsBest teams of the week? San Antonio (4-0), Houston (4-0), Memphis (3-0), Phoenix (3-1) and New York (3-1). The worst? Cleveland (0-4), Orlando (0-3), Dallas (0-3), LA Clippers (0-3) and New Orleans (1-3). High jumps -- Memphis (+10), Philadelphia (+6), Houston (+5), Washington (+3), Phoenix (+3). Free falls -- LA Clippers (-7), New Jersey (-7), Orlando (-6), Cleveland (-3), Atlanta (-3). Check the power rankings (Top 7) here.

    Injury report • Sorted by injuries with most duration, here you can check the full injury report. The Indiana Pacers announced forward Tyler Hansbrough suffered a broken right hand. He will meet with a hand specialist early next week and surgery likely will be performed at a later date; there is no timetable for his return at this point. Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant underwent successful surgery today to repair a minor torn labrum in his right shoulder; following the surgery, Durant's shoulder will be immobilized for up to four weeks.

    All-Star Voting • The 2011 NBA All-Star Ballot was unveiled on November 18th, during a special tip-off event in Los Angeles, the Official Host City of NBA All-Star 2011, and All-Star Balloting began on November 25th at 3 p.m. ET. The 60th NBA All-Star Game, which will air live on TNT and ESPN Radio in the U.S., and reach fans in more than 200 countries and territories in more than 40 languages, will be played at STAPLES Center on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011. NBA All-Star 2011 in Los Angeles will bring together some of the most talented and passionate players in the league’s history for a global celebration of the game. Los Angeles and the STAPLES Center will host NBA All-Star 2011, marking the fifth time The City of Angels and the second time STAPLES Center will be the site of the annual celebration. STAPLES Center last played host to NBA All-Star in 2004, and L.A. also hosted the All-Star Game in 1963, 1972, and 1983. To vote for your Spurs players you'd like to see play in the NBA All-Star Game, text the player's LAST NAME to 69622 (MYNBA). Underlined, changes to the leaders.

    Celtics, Grizzlies swap 3 players • The Boston Celtics announced today that the team has traded guard Nate Robinson to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for guard Greivis Vasquez and forward Sam Young. “We’re happy to be able to bring in a player of Nate’s caliber,” Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace said. “Tossing him with Conley, Mayo, Gay in the same court will give us a number of options on offense.” The Grizzlies stand at 17-23 and are battling with the New Orleans Hornets for the final 8th seed in the West. Robinson played all 39 games for the Celtics as Rajon Rondo's backup, averaging career-lows in points (5.0), rebounds (0.9) and assists (1.2), and publicly had an argument with coach Doc Rivers about his playing time and how he wasn't comfortable with the new rotation. “We welcome Greivis and Sam to the Celtics family. We’re looking forward to seeing how they integrate in with the rest of our roster,” explained Rivers. “And I want to thank Nate for his participations this last two years. We both had our differences, that's the truth, but he’s had a great run, contributing to some great moments on the court and I wish him all the best with Memphis.”

Well yeah, Fisher had more highlights in a Lakers jersey, like the 0.4, that was huge, but returning in the 4th period of a playoff game, sink that 3-point dagger, after his daughter had cancer... that's bigger than some other highlights, IMO. If it's true, I really can't believe the Jazz fans booed him.

Game vs. Nuggets and possibly, a second game (I think Raps) tonight. Trying to go faster, but this 3 days without internet or telephone, also had a lot of work this past days.

Not Fisher related but more Jazzassery:
Okur strips the ball from Turiaf, but the whistle is blown stopping play or so the players would think. A couple seconds after they realize that play is continuing, Korver streaks down the court for an easy dunk. A fan from behind Golden State's basket blew a whistle he brought to the game and they had no trouble figuring out which fan it was. He was wearing a referee uniform!!

Spurs dominate 'Melo, second half in great win over Nuggets
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (DEN :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, January 16 -- Zone defense and an offense led by Manu Ginobili helped San Antonio to an easy triumph. Ginobili scored 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals and Tim Duncan had 16 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Spurs to a 113-92 victory over the Denver Nuggets. DeJuan Blair added 14 off the bench. Antonio McDyess hasn't played well with Blair hobbled in recent games because of an injury; while Blair was the bench's spark. “DeJuan was fantastic off the bench,” McDyess said. Blair received a loud ovation when he entered the game in the second quarter; he played just his second game since recovering from a lower back strain. Maybe this is the perfect time to put Blair back on the starting five or use his efforts from the reserves as another weapon. “The one thing we wanted to do was make them shoot uncomfortably right from the start, but boy, they were knocking them down,” Nuggets coach George Karl said; the Spurs started the game shooting 6-of-7 from the field. “Blair was a big surprise. We didn't mention a whole lot when we were talking about their squad because I read he was recovering from injury. But he didn't look that way at all.”

But in the second quarter the Spurs didn't shoot that well; they stayed in the game because of some friendly calls from the officials. San Antonio allowed Denver to shoot 54 percent in the first half, but then stifled Denver's offense with a zone defense in the third quarter. Carmelo Anthony scored 25 points in the first half, and was looking to have a career night, but a suffocating double-team through the second half only allowed him to score 4 points, finishing the night with 29. Chauncey Billups had 20 points and seven assists for the Nuggets, who had won their previous three contests. J.R. Smith was limited to 7 points, 3-of-13 from the field, suffering from a minor strained MCL. The Nuggets shot just 38 percent in the game, 33 in the second half. “I was talking to Carmelo after the game and he said, 'that zone killed us,'” Ginobili said. “Our defense and some questionable calls saved us tonight because, I think individually we weren't playing as we wanted to.” Corey Maggette finished 4-for-11 from the field for 12 points, while Tony Parker added 12 of his own and five assists. The Spurs outscored the Nuggets 31-17 in the last quarter for the win, when Denver shot just 6-for-21. “We got it handed to us tonight. It is that simple,” Al Harrington said. “The zone kind of threw us out of character.” Harrington had 9 points in 4-of-8 field goals. Nené also had 7 points, and fouled out in the last frame.

Larry Hughes added 11 points for the Spurs. “I had a little chat with Larry after the Mavericks game, because he was passing up open shots. I told him that shooting is what he does - he's one of the best shooters on the team,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “We need him to let it go. He had a better game than against Dallas; he just needs more practice. He didn't find his shot in the first half, but in the second he was deadly.” Hughes just had 7 points against the Mavericks; tonight, he shot 3-of-11 from the field, but all field goals made were from beyond the arc. Hughes normally backs up Ginobili, but Popovich played them together for long stretches. “We wanted to attack their weak side, and we knew that having both Larry and Manu out there together was going to give them some matchup problems,” Popovich added. Hughes had no doubt that playing with most of the starting lineup, including Ginobili, Duncan and Parker, helped his cause. “When I'm out there with most of the starting lineup, there is so much attention being paid to them that I'm going to be able to get open. But I need more accuracy.” The Spurs won the boards battle, 50-28 and also their bench was better than Denver's, 51-23.

Tim Duncan flirts with triple-double, teams up with Maggette to power Spurs over Raps
Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (TOR :: SAS)

SAN ANTONIO, January 19 -- Right now, they're the cream of the West. And they intend to stay like that. Tim Duncan and Corey Maggette combined for 34 points and a plus-minus of +37 in a 102-99 win over the Toronto Raptors at the AT&T Center. Duncan flirted a triple-double, falling just short with 19 points, 16 boards and matching his career-high of 9 blocks in 37 minutes. In heavyweight fashion, Duncan and Maggette's performances made a true 1-2 punch. “It’s incredible. This shows why he is one of the best power forwards in history. He goes out there and just plays hard. He can score and also had all those rebounds. He blocked a lot of shots, too, so he did a great job for us.” Maggette scored 15 points and three rebounds for the Spurs. The Spurs' leading bench scorer tonight, James Anderson, was also impressed. “It’s like having a big brother,” Anderson said. “He just makes everything easy for you with his defense, and all you have to do is just go out there and he will make you play better.” Anderson jumped off the bench to add 12 points and five rebounds in 22 minutes. At 32-10, the Spurs' .761 winning percentage is the best among the Western Conference's 15 squads.

DeJuan Blair, making his first start after missing two weeks with a lower back strain, scored 6 points and 6 rebounds for San Antonio. The Spurs shot 45 percent from the field, including 23-of-26 from the free throw line. George Hill posted 8 points and four assists, as the Spurs improved to 20-5 at home, and won their last five games in AT&T Center. “We know how good we can be. We've just got to keep it going,” Hill said. “We need Tim to play like this every night, but if he can't, then we have to stand up. Rolling down there and fighting on the defensive end to get those guys out of the way, he was huge for us. When he can do things like that, it opens up the floor for the rest of us, that’s the key.” Leading by 13 after the first quarter, the Spurs then went nearly four minutes without scoring in the second quarter, as the Raptors used a 15-5 run in the middle of that frame to overcome a 16-point deficit. Down by 1, 58-57, the Spurs then posted a quick 8-0 spurt in the third to push their lead to 65-58. A 3-pointer by Anderson put the Spurs ahead by 9 entering the fourth. Manu Ginobili added 15 points along with five boards, as he made his first five shots before missing a jumper with 6:23 remaining before halftime. He went 0-of-4 in the second quarter, finishing 7-of-12.

Linas Kleiza scored 22 points to lead Toronto, which dropped its third straight game. DeMar DeRozan added 19 points, and Leandro Barbosa had 16 -- on 7-of-24 shooting. “We've got to be a lot smarter. That's what it comes down to right now,” Barbosa said. “This is a game that definitely hurts. Even with Andrea (Bargnani) out for the season, we were close to the 8th seed. We've still got a lot of games left but this is a game we should've won.” Kleiza tied the game at 88 midway through the fourth quarter when he scored a fadeaway 3. But San Antonio answered the charge out of a timeout, getting an up-and-under by Tiago Splitter and an off-balance 3-pointer as the shot clock was about to explode from Ginobili. “Down the stretch, we just didn't play smart,” rookie Ed Davis said. “We didn't get stops when we needed to and we did not get the quality shots we needed. This was a game we could have won.” The Spurs' reserves outscored Toronto's, 40-32, and then San Antonio outrebounded the Raptors, 46-42.

Must admit I'm happy I didn't trade half of my team, or this would be dead already :lol:

River Walk Chronicles ♦ Spurs Beat

    The Tony Parker Saga -- Continues...
    nba.com/spurs/beat | January 20th, 2011

      January 6: The Spurs and Parker called an armistice just before Christmas, and resumed talks of the contract extension after the New Year. Until Christmas, this looked like a soap opera, because of its unexpected twists and for the tense and long wait before a final resolution. After general manager R.C. Buford appeared on TV and Parker came out on a local San Antonio radio, the story evolved into a chess game. The movements started there, and they will end with Parker in San Antonio for multiple seasons, or all the pieces scattered around the chessboard. The Spurs board used the strategy of passing the ball to Parker's court, for him to accept or end the talks. Anyway, the story in the Spurs board would be different in Parker's mind. Buford is thinking what to do about a new offer that, besides some modifications, is similar to a previous offer that Parker considered “a laugher”. Buford chatted with Parker's agent last night, and the relationship between them is OK, and they both want a happy ending to this story, but they are kind of tired already. The problem is, when Parker finds out about this Buford-agent chatter and the Spurs offer, he explodes.

      January 9: One more actor in the soap opera started a storm. In a press conference after a win over Minnesota in San Antonio, coach Gregg Popovich and said this tidbit: “It's difficult to say something by myself about this. I was told of this information very late. I think it's unfair if he got angry because I said this was close to a resolution. That's what I heard at SportsCenter. I said a lot of times that I want him to stay,” Popovich explained. “But right now, I must imagine a San Antonio without Parker, because, if this is going nowhere, he will be a free agent and I think he will have a lot of offers. Of course, I've already said I want him to commit to the Spurs.” Then he added he wasn't upset because of Parker being angry, “it's his problem”, he underlined. “What upsets me, particularly, that he's not taking into his decision all the support this organization and all the wonderful fans have given him.” Beyond some reports that say Parker could have talked with other teams already, the Frenchman's mind and heart point to the same direction. Parker wants to stay, and he's not thinking in second options.

      January 12: The end is near. The story with the most suspense this past months was Parker's contract extension with San Antonio. And on January 12, with the Spurs defeating the Milwaukee Bucks, it had a big slice of resolution. Parker passed the ball back to the Spurs's court, as he appeared on SportsCenter again and formally asked for the Spurs to send him the new offer. The truth is, according to Parker's entourage, that the Frenchman “only thinks in staying in San Antonio”. Even with reports that suggested Portland and New York were interested in his services, Parker is only listening to the Spurs and that's a big clue for what will happen at the end. The Spurs board is exhausted about this whole situation; after a meeting in the AT&T Center, they said they want this to end as soon as possible; in a positive or negative way, but no more waiting. Another report that flew around this past days said that Parker asked a deal at least until June 2013, to play the 2012 Olympics in London and have the last year of that contract in peace. About the offer, the Spurs board said they sent it, but Parker says he didn't receive it. A never-ending story.

      January 14: The Spurs' flight arrived from Milwaukee in San Antonio for a game against the Dallas Mavericks. And Parker said on press conference: “Definitely, one of my worst flights in year. But that's not important. The important thing is that in my mind, I'll be a Spur in the future.” Parker will extend his contract with San Antonio for 3 years, plus a 4th year player option, in exchange for $42M. “I hope me and the Spurs have success in the coming years,” said Parker, like the paragraph had a last point. But the history needs an official epilogue. “Contract extension years -- checked. Salary -- checked. It's just a matter of papers and a signature. Now my agent and the Spurs have to schedule a last meeting. I hope we can all be happy next week”, said a very relaxed Parker. He even said, a couple of times, “The board and the general manager are doing a very big effort.” Parker also repeated that “it wasn't a money problem”, but couldn't explain what changed this past week in the contract to make him say “yes”.

      January 17: Just like Parker kept the Spurs praying he would even answer their offers, looks like now its the Spurs board who put more pauses on the agreement. Parker already said he agreed on the salary and the 3+1 years on the deal, but the Spurs haven't called an official meeting for him to sign it so far. More Spurs board meetings occurred; the idea of Buford and some board members (who agreed on Parker's extension) was to sign the deal today, but the other half of the board seems to put an ellipsis. In the meanwhile, the team on the court put a hold on Carmelo Anthony to defeat the Nuggets. Will Parker explain what changed on that “laugher” and this new offer? Will Buford point out what aspects of the offer were upgraded? The last chapter of this extension, considering what Parker said, is here. Coming soon, something more than that famous signature: a lot of answers.
