The Tony Parker Saga nba.com/spurs/beat | December 27th, 2010
SAN ANTONIO -- As December draws to an end, a player whose play is improving every week is Spurs point guard Tony Parker. After putting impressive outings on the board in late November, he would be lost for a week with back spasms. Rusty in his return versus Denver, the Frenchman still hasn't been back to his usual self in the Spurs' two games since that point. With Parker expressing his interest in working out a extension of his contract, we take a look behind the scenes of this past month. Already compared to the New York Knicks - Stephon Marbury feud of a couple of years ago, this saga ain't close to an end any time soon.
• December 17: With the ball on his hands, Parker waits for the perfect moment to give that assist no one expects. On December 17, he did the same; in the least expected moment, one day after the Spurs' win at Denver (where Manu Ginobili posted a triple-double), Parker spoke with SportsCenter. “I'm a Spurs fan. I've played with the Spurs my whole NBA career. Some reports claim I'm asking for the AT&T Center,” Parker joked, but in an angry way. “I'm not asking for the AT&T Center, I spoke with my agent and we both think what I'm asking is reasonable. If the board wanted, this problem was arranged a couple of weeks ago. I must admit some other teams called my agent and I've been respectful because I'm a Spurs player. I've not answered this calls because I want to remain a Spur for years to come.” Parker's statements weren't in a random date. On the afternoon, his agent told him that the Spurs wanted to offer him a contract extension to respond immediately. These numbers weren't what Parker expected, and broke the silence. Parker started the interview a little nervous; he even had a sort of backlash with the ESPN interviewers. As soon as the interview ended, it looked like a new conflict focus was emerging, but the read, nevertheless, was different. A close source to the Spurs general manager R.C. Buford explained: “For R.C., Tony's attitude is very positive. He made the first step towards the extension.” The thing is, before this statements by the Frenchman, the Spurs were preparing an offer, so this could be resolved by next week. Close to the end of the night, the thoughts were positive, even with this differences between Parker and the Spurs. “To me, it's 50/50 right now,” Buford said. “But next week, it will be closer to a happy ending.” A board member whispered, “I don't see any team paying him $18 million.”
• December 18: The echo of the statements Parker made yesterday can still be heard in the AT&T Center hallways. The #9 from France talked to SportsCenter, and said sentences like “If the board wanted, this problem was arranged a couple of weeks ago”. That's why everyone wanted to share their opinions and be aware of how the situation is going. From board members, to fans, from team players to the head coach, everyone's talking about Parker. The board members took Parker's words very well. A board member said, “He spoke to ESPN because he wants a resolution.” GM Buford was very positive towards a happy ending. “Is the intention of me and the rest of the board, to see Tony on our team, in a Spurs uniform. Is a negotiation, and as a negotiation, sometimes you are close and sometimes you're far.” The big problem in the contract is, the duration of the deal. While Parker asked for 5 seasons ($73.74M), the Spurs upgraded their offer to 3 years, plus a fourth as a player option (with the option, $61.46M). Away from all the media reports, a source close to Parker said, “Tony wants to stay in San Antonio. The truth is, there's no other cities where he would like to play. But his signature ain't in that contract because he's fighting for himself.” After all this tornado of declarations, the Spurs (without Parker, still on the sidelines) defeated the Memphis Grizzlies behind big efforts from Tiago Splitter and Ginobili.
• December 20: Another couple of days, and Parker still hasn't wrote his signature in that piece of paper. The ending is clear: Parker will stay in San Antonio for at least four more seasons, but why the Frenchman hasn't signed his contract? What's behind so many back and forths between Parker and the Spurs board? A new personal meeting between Buford and Parker's agent is scheduled for December 22. Why not before? Full agendas. Only a handful of people know what's exactly happening with this saga and why it hasn't ended yet: Parker, his agent, Buford and the rest of the board. What's clear is that Buford went against many board members and wanted to extend Parker. Some of those members didn't want to extend the deal. Buford accepted Parker's request: at least four years of contract, whether three and a player option for a fourth year, or a full five years deal. But Parker still didn't sign the contract: he knew some board members didn't want to extend him. Maybe that report that was flying around is true: that Parker was upset because the Spurs first acquired Corey Maggette and signed Larry Hughes before solving his new contract. Except for him and Garrett Temple, every Spur has his contractual situation for 2011-12 arranged already. Even with all these troubles, Splitter and Antonio McDyessled San Antonio's win against the Phoenix Suns.
• December 23: That basketball player that always thinks before making a pass, exploded in anger without any thought. One day after his return to the team (a last-second win against the Denver Nuggets), Parker came out on a local San Antonio radio and spoke against the Spurs' extension proposal. The board also was angry, because they feel that, even when some of the members were against an extension, they are doing a big effort to keep him around. That 50/50 Buford said some days ago, we could say it's on 75/25 now against Parker returning. While the Spurs were busy, acquiring Maggette in the offseason and also signing Hughes in the first week of regular season, Parker heard Buford on TV yesterday, saying that “Parker's extension it's done in an 80 percent.” Parker said on the radio that “what the board first offered me was a laugher. After that, they added a player option, but the numbers didn't satisfy me. I always speak with the truth. I don't like when my team's general manager says that my situation is close to a deal. This is going backwards from a couple of days already.” A board member answered back, “Let him speak. In the first meeting, we offered a 3-year deal that didn't convince him; he wanted at least four, if not five. We offered him four years, and he hasn't answered yet. We're still waiting. The ball is on his side of the court. Everyone on the board is upset with Parker's statements.” But in the same board, the members are meditating every step very carefully: this guy won three rings, a Finals MVP award, is a 3-time All-Star and a member of the team's “Big 3”. That's why Buford went against many board members in the past few days for this player's extension. By the end of the day, the Spurs survived Dwight Howard's monster night and defeated the Magic. Bottomline is, the Spurs made the four-year offer, three seasons plus a player option for the fourth. If there's still willingness from both sides of the table, there's an open door.
Kobe's 55-point outburst leads Lakers over Spurs in thriller, West race still way open Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (LAL :: SAS)
SAN ANTONIO, December 28 -- The San Antonio Spurs were leading by 6 points in the first minutes of the contest, when Kobe Bryant suddenly got hot. Oh, did he get hot. Bryant scored 16 points in the first quarter and 34 on the first half to finish with a season-record 55 points, and power the Lakers to a 114-109 win over San Antonio, in a pivotal regular season game as Bryant's team reduced the games behind the Spurs to only 1. Bryant also finished with 4 points and 4 steals. “Tonight, the way he was going, we probably could have put 10 people on the court and probably wouldn't have been able to stop him,” said Spurs guard Tony Parker, who wasn't bad himself, getting 19 points and eight assists following his contract extension feud with the team. “I didn't realize it,” Bryant said when told about his scoring spree. “You just get into one of those rhythms, you don't keep track of your points. You look at the jumbotron every now and then, but only that. My teammates were looking for me, it just feels like the ball finds you.” Parker gave Kobe credit for his explosion, but said there's no excuse for allowing a player to score so many points. “He hit every jump shot, every layup. Dunked on everyone,” he added.
Bryant, matched up for most of the game against one of the NBA's up-and-coming defenders in Manu Ginobili, did most of his damage in the first half. He scored 16 points in the first quarter and 18 in the second, when the Lakers took the lead for good, then added 21 in the second half. “He's a very good defender,” Bryant said of the Argentinian. “I just wanted to be aggressive, wanted to get to my comfort level and my most accurate spots on the court, and try to raise up and shoot over him. But I must admit, every time I face him he has a more suffocating defense.” Ginobili also showed his offensive side, posting a Spurs-high 25 points, in 10-of-18 shooting. While San Antonio held control early, Bryant raised his level of play as the game wore on. He helped put the Spurs away for good in the early minutes of the fourth period, scoring ten points in a 12-0 run that turned a three-point deficit into a 102-93 lead. “We wanted to get stops and get out and run,” Lakers guard Derek Fisher said. “They kept Kobe's pick-and-roll. He kept stepping behind and shooting, and getting to the lane penetrating, and that opened looks for every player on the team.” Fisher scored 14 points and seven assists in 6-of-9 shooting, including a perfect 2-of-2 from beyond the arc.
Andrew Bynum added 12 points, ten rebounds and a season-high 5 blocks for Los Angeles, which shot a whooping 57 percent (52-of-90) from the field and put an end to the Spurs' 8-game winning streak. Tim Duncan added 19 points for San Antonio, now 23-8, returning from a week on the sidelines. Corey Maggette added 15 points and a career-high 7 steals, but Tiago Splitter was invisible: 8 points, 3 rebounds, and a terrible plus-minus of -25. Splitter respected the Lakers' win over the Miami Heat on Christmas and expected a difficult matchup. “We knew these guys were going to be tough after that win over the Heat; they played extremely well in that contest,” the Brazilian said. The Spurs shot 48 percent from the field and their bench outscored the Lakers' 27-16, but they where outrebounded 35-29. “I just think we have to do more work for the last 12 minutes,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich added. “We stood around in the fourth period. Despite being behind, I think we played a nice first half. Our third quarter was brilliant, being on the lead again, but then we didn't even have an average fourth quarter.” Ginobili said the Spurs stopped being aggressive in the fourth. “It seemed like we kind of stopped going to the basket. We got timid. That 12-0 run they had, that buried us. To their credit, they did what they do and put it to us.” The Spurs will hold training tomorrow, Wednesday morning, before flying to Dallas on the afternoon, to battle the Mavericks on Thursday night and close out December.

I'm not saying he's bad, I'm just saying he needs minutes in every game to have constant productions... but I don't see him as a Spur.

As I said to Lamrock, Gasol and Odom didn't take shot attempts like they use to. I was leading by 9 and they needed to get back quickly, so that what Kobe is for.

Duncan, Parker, Ginobili combine for plus-minus of +44 in win over struggling Mavericks Preview | Recap | Game Info | Full Play-by-Play | Boxscores (SAS :: DAL)
DALLAS, December 30 -- The Dallas Mavericks wish they could win without Tyson Chandler and Brendan Haywood. Rookie James Anderson scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half, helping the San Antonio Spurs hold off the Mavericks for a 106-103 victory. “This was a huge win for us on the road,” Anderson said. “Specially after the loss to the Lakers. Dallas had great defensive tactics, I'm not even sure how we won this game.” The Spurs had a season-worst 22 turnovers. Dallas made 44 percent of their field goals and had just seven turnovers, but were doomed to a loss after letting the Spurs made 9-of-12 shots from 3-point territory. The Mavericks started the season 13-2, but are 5-11 since losing Chandler and Haywood to injuries. “It's killing us,” Dallas' Jason Kidd said. “We have been searching for ways to be successful but we are failing, badly.” Despite trailing by 11 midway through the fourth period, the Mavs had a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to 2. They had a chance to force overtime after Corey Maggette made 1-of-2 free throws. Following a timeout, with 5.4 seconds left, Kidd had a pick-and-roll with Dirk Nowitzki but missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Dallas coach Rick Carlisle insisted he went with the group that gave his team its best chance to win. Shawn Marion, who had 6 points and four rebounds for a great +16 off the bench -- and a suffocating defense over Maggette -- , acknowledged he was frustrated. “I'd be lying if I said I wasn't frustrated. I think I can do more to help us win basketball games,” he said. “When the opportunity presents itself, I'll be here to take on the challenge. But the coach didn't think that way.” The Mavericks have been banged up for much of the season, missing Marion for six games in mid-November and now Chandler (out for the season with a torn MCL) and Haywood (out with a torn hamstring for at least one more week). But Nowitzki kept them on the game. The German made 6-of-7 shots in the second half and finished with 20 points. Kidd finished with 15 points and 11 assists, Caron Butler and Jason Terry both added 20 as well, and rookie Dominique Jones added 8. The loss of Chandler and Haywood hindered the Mavericks, who were left with Ian Mahinmi and Alexis Ajinca as their only two centers. But Carlisle wasn't making any excuses. “I don't believe in that. We have enough players in uniform and on the court. Whether Tyson and Brendan are not in, you've got to win a basketball game.”
Tim Duncan scored 19 points -- perfect from the field in 8 field goals, to go with six boards and five blocks -- , Manu Ginobili had 14 points and Tony Parker posted 15 and nine assists. “We caught them and perhaps they were a little overconfident based on all the turnovers we had,” Duncan said. “We didn't really change anything schematically and really just grinded this thing out. I would like to give credit to our team for not giving up.” Carlisle worried about San Antonio's wide-open play without DeJuan Blair, who hopes to return to the lineup next week, and his fears were realized. As pointed out before, the Spurs were 9-of-12 on 3-pointers -- rookie Gary Neal making 3 for 9 points. “That was just incredible,” Neal said. “We knew that we were going to spread the floor. We knocked a lot of them down for the win, compensating all those turnovers.” Tiago Splitter scored 10 points for San Antonio and Maggette finished with 8. The Spurs lost a big cushion in the fourth, but made enough hustle plays and free throws to seal its second victory in the last three games and lead the West. The Spurs had 29 assists on 39 field goals and their bench won again, 41-23. This game closed 2010 for the Spurs, who will open 2011 on January 1 back in San Antonio against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
