Chapter 7

"...Not enough?! How much are you asking for" asked Lai with a raised eyebrow
"8 million per year for at least 4 years" replied Calipari "That's the least you could pay me to leave Kentucky"
"When you have no NBA coaching experience?" laughed Lai as he stood up, signaling for an end to the conversation "I'll keep this in mind, thanks for the interview"

After Calipari left the room, Lai sat back down on his comfortable chair and called for some coffee from his secretary. He was exhausted. It had been 4 straight days worth of interviews and so far everyone sounds like a bad fit for the team.
"I need a guy who can take this team to the next level" thought Lai as his secretary came in with the coffee "Who's coming in next?" he asked
"Sir, you have Mr.Thibodeau, Mr. Collins and Mr. Scott next" replied the secretary
"Right....Thanks"

The interviews would go on and still nothing seems like a perfect fit. All three sounded confident but have their own flaws. Tom Thibodeau obviously can't teach offense, Doug Collins hasn't exactly been a great coach throughout his career, and Byron Scott has had feuds with past players despite being a good coach.

Lai sighed and closed his eyes, he was running out of time.

✧✧✧✧✧

It was the 2011 All-Star Weekend and it has certainly been a blast for the Chicago duo of Wade and Rose, as they put on a show in the All-Star Game and narrowly lost in the waning moments to Kobe Bryant and the Western All Stars. However, they had more work to do as they were asked for thoughts and suggestions on their next head coach.

"I think he'll be pretty good" said Wade "True that he hasn't had a great record, but he seems a pretty good player coach to me"
"So you would accept Maurice as your coach?" asked Lai
"Yes, I think it'll work out good"
"What about you Derrick?"
"Well, You know i'd love it for coach Calipari to come, but I also think he's better suited for the college game" answered Rose "If you ask me, I'll take that Boston guy, Tom Thibodeau. Defense wins championships and from what I've heard, he is a great defensive coach; and to top it off, he knows how to win"
"Alright, thanks you two. I apprieciate the input.

✧✧✧✧✧

It was the day for the big decision to be made. Lai looks at the clock, thinking about his decision one. last. time.
"So, Mr General Manager" said owner Jerry Reinsdorf as he comes into the room, right on the dot "Have you made your decision yet?"
Lai took a deep breath "Yes sir, this is my choice"
"I believe he has what it takes for our team to get to the next level" Lai continued "He has done this before, he has the experience, he knows what it's like"
"I think he'll be a great coach" concluded Lai after a brief pause
"Well, I hope you are right" answered Reinsdorf "Go for it. Good luck to you"
"...Thank you sir, i'll do my best" replied Lai as Reinsdorf walked out of the room, almost as quickly as he walked in
Lai exhaled, and allowed himself to relax as he assembled the documents before picking up the phone

It's time for a new era to begin

Chapter 8

"So...we have a deal?" Lai asked the man in his office, the man who would be the next head coach of the Chicago Bulls
"Yes, thank you. I accept the terms." the man answered before signing his name on the dotted line "I look forward to working with you"
"Good, I wish you good luck, glad you are on board" said Lai "Press conference is tomorrow morning at 10:00 sharp"

✧✧✧✧✧

"It is my pleasure in introducing Byron Scott to the city of Chicago as the Chicago Bulls' new head coach" stated Lai "It had been a long process, and after deep consideration we believe that Bryon is the clear cut best fit for our team right now"
Lai paused before continuing "Byron is a proven winner in our league with a lot of success. As a player he has won 3 championships with the Lakers, and as a head coach, Bryon has had tremendous success; leading the Nets to back-to-back finals appearances, leading the Hornets from ground zero through a complete restructuring, one that has led to tremendous successes that including a coach of the year award for Coach Scott as well as a number of postseason runs. Additionally, Coach Scott has also had, through his coaching career, great successes with point guards. Jason Kidd. Chris Paul. We're hoping that he could do the same with our very own All-Star point guard Derrick Rose and elevating Derrick onto that next level."
The room erupted into applause as Lai exchanged handshakes with Scott, the applause prolonged for a while as Scott sat back down and took the mic.
"First of all I just want to thank Leo here, as well as Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf and the rest of the Bulls organization for making this opportunity available for me" Scott began "They have placed enormous trust in me, making this offer and change in the middle of the season, and I am confident that I could live up to both their expectations as well as the expectations from the wonderful fans in the city of Chicago."
"We have a very talented roster and some tremendous players on this team, two of which would of course be Dwyane and Derrick. I look forward to working with them and teaching them the things that I know would help them become even better players, and at the same time provide a guide for them in that ultimate path to a championship." Scott continued "I am confident in our chances in a deep playoff run this season and hopefully a championship in the upcoming future."
The press then started pumping questions at Scott, who calmly answered each and everyone with confidence and poise, but not to the point of cockiness. After a whole 10 minutes worth of questions, Lai and Scott stood up again, this time Lai presented Scott with a Bulls Jersey and the GM - Coach pair posed for the endless stream of photos.

✧✧✧✧✧

With the NBA Trade Deadline looming, Leo Lai and the Bulls' new head coach Byron Scott had been working overtime after overtime, constantly thinking of ways to improve the team. Scott still needed some adjustment to get used to the team and vice versa, and obviously it was a perfect opportunity to start fresh with players that Scott would be comfortable with.

"I think he'll be a great fit" Scott was saying "He can score, defend, and is extremely versatile. He'll be great coming off the bench"
"What are you going to do when Evan comes back from injury? He's basically in a duplicate role"
"......True, lets look at another"
"We signed Morrow a while ago, but our three pointers are still shit."
"I think it's just the team's execution and lack of plays"
"You can fix that, right?"
"Of course" Scott answered when Lai's secretary came into the room
"Mr Lai, Mr Scott? The Deadline is up"

An Awkward silence goes through the room before Lai finally spoke

"Fuck, never mind. Just deal with what you've got for now. I'll tweak things in the offseason"
"Yes Sir. I'll be off to practice now then" replied Scott before leaving the room
Lai then turned to his secretary "Can you give me the final lists of deals and league details?"
"It'll take a while sir, but i'll get it done"
"Take a while? why?"
"Because this year's deadline is extremely active" Bulls legend Scottie Pippen said as he walked into the room "How you doing, I'm Scottie"
He extended his hand, and Lai took the handshake "Leo Lai, General Manager. It's a pleasure sir, but please, elaborate?"
"You'll see when the list comes, but I'm just going to say that the balance of power in the league just shifted" answered Pippen "some teams just got awfully tough. Ah, here are the lists."
Lai took the lists and took quick glances, he looked up at Scottie, who shrugged. Lai looked back down at the list and sighed.
"I'll be damned, thank god we're not in the West"

Byron Scott named Bulls Head Coach
February 15th 2011

The Chicago Bulls has announced the hiring of former Hornets head coach
Byron Scott as the team's new head coach. Bulls General Manager Leo Lai
announced at a press conference earlier today.

"It is my pleasure in introducing Byron Scott to the city of Chicago as the
Chicago Bulls' new head coach" stated Lai in the press conference "It had
been a long process, and after deep consideration we believe that Bryon
is the clear cut best fit for our team right now"

Per team policy, terms of the deal was not announces. It is only known
that it is a three year deal that could be worth up to 6 million dollars.

In addition, the Bulls have also announced the hiring of former Bulls
guard Ron Harper as the new assistant coach to replace the recently
retired Del Harris. Harper has also been inked to a three year deal.

RealGM Note: Scott has a career winning percentage of .498 in 707 career games.

Grading the Deals: 2011 NBA Trade Deadline

The NBA Trade Deadline. Historically, the trade deadlines have been one of two extremes - tons of fanfare and smokescreens with little actual movement taking place, or major shuffles around the league.

For the Deadline of 2011. It was the latter, but it was more of quality than quantity. A total of 7 deals were made, involving 13 teams and 21 players, and nearly every trade has the potential to topple the balance of power in the NBA.

So without further ado, lets begin handing out the report cards. Starting with the deal that sparked the domino.

Lakers Trade Luke Walton to the Warriors for Shaquille O'Neal

The two time back to back defending champs made the call to bring back their legendary center Shaquille O'Neal to LA, in exchange? They gave up an unhappy Luke Walton who has been stuck on the bench for most of the season and will continue to stick around thanks to his big, multi-year contract.

Shaq might be old, but he still brings size, power and a certain degree of dominance around the basket. He'll be a great backup center to Andrew Bynum who has still been struggling with injuries, and will serve as a mentor for the young center. Shaq is familiar with the triangle and will have no problems fitting in, and unlike the past, the Diesel has made it clear that he is cool with Kobe being the main man.

"I just want to come back here and finish my career off with a title" said O'Neal "Kobe's the man on this team, I'm just here to help"

Meanwhile, Golden State gets a more than capable forward who can make plays and distribute the ball to help their offense, O'Neal wasn't getting much minutes behind Biedrins and Randolph and they desperately needed a capable 3. They got what they wanted, but it might cost them in terms of cap flexibility.

Grade for LA Lakers: A
Grade for Golden State: B-

Nets Trade Yi Jianlian to the Bobcats for DeSagana Diop and Willie Warren

It was pretty clear that the Bobcats were slipping as of late, and largely it had been due to the ineffectiveness of Boris Diaw. The Bobcats traded away two role players who are stuck outside of the rotation for a boarderline starter in Yi Jianlian.

Yi is a 7 footer capable of stretching the defense to beyond the three point line, his versatility will benefit the Bobcats as they make their push to maintain a high seeding in the Eastern Conference. He is still only 23/24 years old and has a ton of potential to grow, Larry Brown might be the guy that could get him over that hump.

For the Nets, it was pretty clear that it was time to clear out on their overloaded forwards. They cash in on a capable backup center in Diop and a young prospect in Warren. Diop will provide immediate help for Brook Lopez while time will tell on the Warren investment.

Grade for Charlotte: B
Grade for New Jersey: C+

Pistons Trade Ben Gordon to the Hornets for Darius Songaila, Morris Peterson, and the Hornets' 2012 1st round pick

The Ben Gordon experiment did not work out as Joe Dumars has hoped and he has finally decided to pull the plug. Detroit is in full rebuilding mode and they got themselves some expiring contracts and most importantly, a possible lottery pick in the next draft.

For the Hornets, this is a gamble for the present. They are currently stuck at 10th in the Western Conference but are trying to make a run for the playoffs in order to keep Chris Paul happy (and to resign him). Ben Gordon fills the gap at the two guard immediately and is a great shooter for Chris Paul to work with. He'll take the pressure off Paul and David West just by being on the floor and his long range bombs will help the Hornets get back into games more often then not. It's a great fit and if this goes well, their 2012 1st round pick will be nothing more than a mid-late first.

Grade for Detroit: B
Grade for Hornets: A-

Raptors Trade Al Harrington and Kurt Thomas to the Hornets for Julian Wright, Patrick Patterson and the Hornets' 2011 2nd round pick

It's offical, the Hornets are making a homerun gamble here. The Addition of Al Harrington will drastically improve their starting five into a quality five of Paul, Gordon, Harrington, West and Okafor while sending Posey back to the bench in that sixth man role that he belongs in. Kurt Thomas is a veteran center that would be a great bonus coming off the bench behind Okafor, providing toughness and energy when needed. To top it off, the Hornets did not give up much in Julian Wright, who, is still young and has potential, but has yet to show it for New Orleans, and a bench warmer in Patrick Patterson. Personally, I think the second round pick will be more valuble than the two players that the Hornets had given up on this trade.

Al Harrington is a guy who can stretch the defense and can fill in for David West in the four spot at times, his defense is a little shaky but the offensive capability is just as much, if not a lot more, than what Peja Stojakovic can bring to the table in previous seasons (when the Hornets were still winning).

For the Raptors, this is purely a salary dump. Al Harrington has not worked well with Hedo Turkoglu in the role of filling in the hole Chris Bosh had left after bolting to Washington and it had been a miserable season for Toronto. They are in need of a massive turnaround and would have been much better off if they had been able to sucker Jeff Bower into giving them the 1st round pick (which still looks to be a lottery pick given the quality of the West) rather than the 2nd round pick.

Grade for Toronto: C-
Grade for Hornets: B+

Mavericks Trade Erick Dampier to the Pacers for Troy Murphy
For the Mavs, this is a decent boost to their frontline, but not the best one. Troy Murphy's biggest strengths on the offensive end is to stretch the floor, and Dallas already has a MVP caliber player in Dirk that does the same thing. They needed some strength down low and a traditional big man would have been ideal. Still, they got rid of Dampier's useless ass and got themselves a player who is capable of getting double doubles just about every night.

For the Pacers, this is yet another salary move as Dampier's massive contract will be drawing to it's end. Indiana has no hopes of making a push and with this move they'll begin to plan their offseason (yes, already) plans.

Grade for Dallas: C+
Grade for Indiana: B-

Cavaliers Trade Antawn Jamison to the Rockets for Kyle Lowry and Jared Jefferies

In what has been one of the worst seasons in Cavaliers history, their lone remaining star (Big Z is too old to be considered a star, and yes, he's probably the second best player along with Mo Williams) Jamison wanted out. The Cavs decided to aim for the Ping Pong balls rather than fight with dignity.

Jamison will now join Yao Ming to form a Formidable frontline in Houston. His ability to stretch the floor while Yao operates in the low post will be a great bonus for the Rockets as they make their late season playoff push (they are hovering around the 8th seed in the competitive West).

The Cavaliers will get yet another point guard (they have a ton of them) in Kyle Lowry and a "do it all" in Jared Jefferies. Honestly, they might just concede the season, because they are pretty much going to get smashed with Mo williams, Nate Robinson, and Big Z as their "Big Three".

Grade for Cleveland: E
Grade for Houston: A

Wizards Trade Nick Young, Art Parakhouski, and the Wizards 2011 2nd round pick to the Kings for Shannon Brown and Craig Brackins

It has been clear that Shannon Brown wanted out of Sacramento, being stuck behind Manu Ginobili, Tyreke Evans and even sometimes LeBron James in the rotations. He now goes to a Wizards team, consisting of Chris Bosh and Gilbert Arenas, that would welcome his athletic ability with open arms. The highflying guard will join Tyrus Thomas in flying the skies and appearing in the highlight reel night after night.

The Kings, on the otherhand, replaces Brown nicely will another young gun in Nick Young. Young is pretty athletic himself, is a capable scorer, and would not be too unhappy about the reduced role unlike the two time NBA Champion Shannon Brown.

Grade for Washington: B
Grade for Sacramento: B

He really should've....and yeah, Bynum is still that injury-prone but potential filled (and not surfaced yet..) center.

and if Shaq could handle being a role player for Prince James, he could handle  to Kobe, who is now going for the three-peat (side note: when i simmed the 09/10 season, Lakers won 4-3 against Celtics too!)

The Diesel wants to retire with a ring

Justine. wrote:Walton for Shaq  Hornets lineup looks strong though (Y)

Not that surprising, remember Shaq is really old now and his rating is actually around Walton's....as for the Hornets, they've made major upgrades (well, Al Harrington is shit, but much better than the 6x Peja and is around Posey's rating) Ben Gordon is a major add to the lineup. They still have a deep hole to climb out of to make the playoffs though...
