Marbury Says No To Buyout

Guard Stephon Marbury is reportedly refusing to accept a buyout from the Knicks, saying that if the team wants him gone they're going to have to pay everything owing on his contract, which is something Garden chairman James Dolan does not want to do, according to a report by Newsday.

Marbury was quoted in Wednesday's New York Post saying, "There won't be no negotiation...They're going to give me all my money." This caused the Knicks to step back from their initial plans to release Marbury by the end of the week, as reported by Newsday.

Mind you, if I was looking at going from $20 mil per year to quite likely the veteran's minimum, I probably wouldn't be keen to forego a a bulk of my potential income either. Also, the Knicks were apparently interested in Ben Gordon but Chicago wasn't about to take on Marbury's contract, even with it expiring at the end of the year. They're also hoping Jerome James retires for the purpose of cap relief and Allan Houston will be in training camp again this year.

Does anyone here have an opinion on Wilson Chandler?
He is a very energetic player and I think will (or should) get the starting role at SF. He is a great rebounder already, but he needs to improve his jumpshot. He is only 21 years old, and I think has a lot of potential.

Remains to be seen whether he'll make it through camp and the pre-season this year. He might have a better shot this year with a couple of guards departing.

I think Chandler has a tremendous upside, but he needs time to develop. I hope he was working on his 'J' during the summer.

Dude, this is the worst era in Knicks history, thanks to Cablevision, the Dolans & Zeke. I've given up hoping for a championship - I'll be dead and buried before that happens(but at least I saw the first two). Thank goodness we have the Giants.

All I'm asking for now is hustle, teamwork, unselfishness and smart basketball. I want the Garden to be exciting again, like it was during the early 70s and the 90s.

Knicks guard Stephon Marbury, who appeared to have one foot out the door all summer long, sees himself as the starting point guard for the team.

New coach Mike D'Antoni is rumored to view Chris Duhon as the starter, with Marbury coming off the bench as a sixth man.

"You can't assess it yet," Marbury said of his competition with Duhon for the starting gig. "When the 29th comes, when the lights come on, it will be different. It doesn't matter now who is on the court at what position. I know when that the game starts, I'll have the ball or I'll be receiving the ball to make plays for others and myself."

Good to know he's open to accepting whatever role Mike D'Antoni has in mind.

Good leadership from Steph here and a great example to be setting, because now Eddy Curry has come out and said the exact same thing.

Competitiveness is all well and good, but they dont seem to have the betterment of the team in mind, just themselves.

Indeed. We all have our egos of course and I imagine to lose your starting spot after establishing yourself as a starter in the league and feeling that you're still more than capable of continuing to start is a lot to swallow but for the sake of chemistry, these are issues that you'd surely want to downplay in the media and try to resolve behind closed doors.

Mind you, Marbury has now backed off those remarks and talked about wanting to win a championship with the Knicks.

Knicks To Keep Marbury Until Trade Deadline?

The Knicks could hold onto point guard Stephon Marbury until this February's trading deadline.

Marbury has been the biggest story in New York for a majority of the year despite the fact that he didn't play after Jan. 11.

"I wasn't even playing and it was about me," Marbury said. "I was blamed for losses and I wasn't even playing. That's crazy right there."

The Knicks were expected to cut or release Marbury this summer, but he's made it through training camp and into the preseason.

If he makes it to the opening-night roster, he could very well make it all the way to February's trade deadline.

Perhaps not a bad idea. I'm sure there's a lot of Knicks fans who would prefer he was sent packing earlier than that but since there's been no deal this past offseason and he won't accept a buyout, the Knicks might be able to deal him at the deadline to someone looking for cap relief. I'd say at this point of the year, there are teams who feel they might be able to do something with the roster they have who won't feel quite as optimistic come February, and be more willing to shake things up and start rebuilding or retooling.
