Cavaliers Hand Hawks First Loss
Atlanta, GA - Well, just because they beat the Bulls by 24 doesn't mean they would suddenly become an elite team. Thats not to say the Hawks are bad though, as drawing a conclusion from their second game would be irresponsible. Not to mention that even in a loss, the Hawks showed quite a bit of promise.
Atlanta hung with LeBron James and the more experienced Cavs for the first quarter. However, things fell apart for the Hawks in the second as Josh Smith picked up three quick fouls, trying to guard LeBron, while Cavs rookie Sly Vick (a.k.a. Boobie Gibson 2.0) started draining three's off the superstar's assists.
Down 15 at the half, the Hawks just get back in the game as the Cavs countered all of their runs. Josh Smith picked up a couple more fouls (and continued to underachieve offensively with just 9 points) and only Joe Johnson was doing well.
With eight minutes in the fourth, and Atlanta down by 18, coach Washburn took a timeout and gave his team a pep talk. That pep talk was pivotal, but despite the impressive 14-4 run, it was too little too late. LeBron hit his free throws, and the visiting Cavaliers ran off with the win, 98-92. Joe Johnson had 22 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds, and a career high 4 blocks in the losing effort.
"It always hurts to lose, but I was really proud of my guys tonight. We never gave up, and made those guys sweat," remarked coach Washburn on the loss. When fielded the question about Josh Smith's disappointing performances, he said, [i]"Its been two games. Give the guy some time, and I'm sure he'll find his swagger again. Its not east to play against LeBron."
Their next game will be yet another home game, this time against Chris Bosh and the New Jersey Nets. Will the Hawks rebound from this loss? Will Josh Smith break out of this funk? Time will tell. (The NBA: Where bad sportswriters happens)
