Eastern Conference Quarterfinals Preview: (1) Pistons vs. (8) Magic

Detroit: 70-12 (37-4 Home, 33-8 Road) Vs. Orlando: 40-42 (28-13 Home, 12-29 Road)

The Pistons have been red hot all year, posting the second best record in NBA history. Led by MVP Chauncey Billups, they are the favorites to win the NBA championship, which would be their second title in three years.

Meanwhile, the Magic, led by combo guard Steve Francis and sophomore big man Dwight Howard have sneaked into the playoffs with a 40-42 record. They lost the season series 3-1 to Detroit, with a lone win in Orlando in February.

Can the Magic pull off the biggest upset in NBA history? It looks unlikely, but the NBA is Where Amazing Happens.

NBA Playoffs - Game 1: Magic @ Pistons

Magic 108, Pistons 110

Most simply expected the Pistons, coming off a 70 win season, to simply walk all over their 8th seed adversaries. However, Orlando came to play. Led by sophomore 6th man Jameer Nelson of all players, the Magic were one clutch 3 pointer short of upsetting the Pistons in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

From the start, the Magic were hungry for the win. The first half was very intense, with the Pistons eventually leading 60-55. The third quarter seesawed between the two teams, and ended with the Magic leading by 2.

The fourth quarter was a scoring duel between the two back courts: Jameer Nelson + Steve Francis vs. Chauncey Billups + Rip Hamilton. With 23 seconds to go, the game was tied at 106, Orlando ball. An open Hedo Turkoglu took a long 2 and missed, then on the fastbreak, Rasheed Wallace jammed an alley-oop off a Billups assist to take a two point lead with 5.6 seconds left. With a chance to win, the Magic passed the ball around for a couple seconds before settling on a semi-open Jameer Nelson, who threw up a three, which clanked off the rim.

The Pistons celebrated a hard-earned win. Player of the game honors went to Rasheed Wallace, for his shutdown defense on Dwight Howard (12-7 line on 4-13 shooting), his own line of 17 points and 11 rebounds, and his game-winning dunk. In the loss, Jameer Nelson put up 26 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 5 steals, on 10-13 shooting. Tayshaun Prince led all scorers with 27 points, while Chauncey Billups had 20 points and 10 assists.

NBA Playoffs - Game 2: Magic @ Pistons

Orlando finally recieved justice. After being edged out in the dying minutes of Game 1, the Orlando Magic came back and had another great game against the heavily favored Pistons, and this time came out with a win.

If Jameer Nelson was the leader of Orlando in Game 1, then Dwight Howard was the unquestionable leader in Game 2. With his Wilt-esque line of 23 points and 26 rebounds, Howard dismantled the Pistons. Getting his primary defender Ben Wallace into foul trouble early on, Howard dominated. Richard Hamilton's amazing 37 point, 8 rebounds, 5 assist game was overshadowed by Howard's play. Nevertheless, Hamilton kept the Pistons in the game throughout with his amazing 3 point shooting, nailing 8 treys!

From start to finish it was a close and exciting game. Led by the backcourt of MVP Chauncey Billups (16-4-8) and "Rip" Hamilton, the Pistons led 27-22 after the first period. The lead was at its peak of 11 points midway through the second when Ben Wallace picked up his third foul, allowing Dwight Howard a three point play. Everything came together for Orlando from there, and the Magic finished the quarter on a 16-2 run, and led 54-51 at the half.

Ben Wallace came back in the third, but was back on the bench within minutes after picking up #4. Steve Francis caught fire and the Magic shot out to a 10 point lead, with was all but extinguished by a pair of Rip threes. 79-78 Orlando going into the fourth, Hedo Turkoglu hit a three to make their lead four, and that sparked a 10-2 run. The Magic stayed up by around that amount until the two minute mark hit.

Rasheed Wallace broke out of his cold streak to hit a couple long jumpers, and Hamilton hit the last of his eight threes to make it a 3 point game. However, a pair of Howard free throws (and promptly, Ben Wallace fouling out) clinched the win for his team, as the Orlando Magic tie the series 1-1.

Series tied 1-1.

NBA Playoffs - Game 3: Pistons @ Magic

After two excellent games, and young star Dwight Howard's dominance, some were discussing the possibility of the Orlando Magic upsetting the Detroit Pistons, who had won 70 games in the regular season. Those talks were put to rest however, as Detroit regain homecourt advantage with a blowout win in Orlando.

From the start, it was Detroit's defense that let them control the game. Taking a 26-16 advantage after one, and leading 53-36 at the half, Detroit held Orlando to just 33% shooting. That excellent defense carried over into the second half as well.

A pair of 3 point plays by Steve Francis and Dwight Howard respectively pushed the lead back to 13 midway though the third period. However, Detroit got back on D, and the Magic would never come within single digits. Detroit coasted to an easy 109-84 win.

Leading the Pistons was MVP Chauncey Billups with 22 points and 9 assists. Meanwhile, Tayshaun Prince led all scorers with 28. Steve Francis' 18 points and 10 assists, and 18 points off the bench from Hedo Turkoglu were all for naught as Detroit dominated from start to finish.

Now down 2-1, the Magic have lost homecourt advantage and their swagger. Game 4 will decide if they are the real deal, or just another fluke.
