I must admit I'm not that familiar with him, though a friend of mine who's studying journalism is a big fan. The most exposure I've had to him was his appearance in the "Fuck" documentary.

Basically, everything you read by him you take with a grain of salt...maybe all of its true, maybe none of it is, which is the amazing part. Journalism to me is pretty stale unless its gonzo: (which is basically being an active member of the story)and since Doc Thompson is the originator...for me its also a philosophical thing: participation yet observation, and recording/telling the event well later.
