Crunch Time Issues in NBA Live

Postby Binhpac on Sun Dec 31, 2006 10:48 am

Hey guys,

I figured out, that you can't dribble anymore with 1.3 secs left for example. In real life it's enought time to catch the ball, make a dribble and make a clear Jump Shot. So i compared some Jump Shots from videos with the Shots in Live and here is the difference:

First the animation of the game is much slower than jumping in real life. So you need alot more time to do
Then in real life you do alot more Set Shots, in-game you always jump high in the sky to do your jump shot.

On the other hand, if the CPU has the ball sometimes he seems to be unable to catch the ball and take the shot. He takes the ball and wait the times up. And also the CPU does dumb Time-Outs and dumb Stop-The-Clock Fouls. He uses all his Time-Outs before the last shot. And when it comes to the last shot, he doesnt have any TO left. I can always pass to my best freethrow-shooter and the CPU starts doing Fouls.

The CPU never takes the decision to play TOUGH defense to get the ball and then doing the foul by trying to get a steal or forcing a turnover. And yes, the stop-the-clock algorithm sucks, because there's no HUG-THE-WORST-FT-SHOOTER, so you can always count on your best free-throw-shooter, letting Shaquille Oneal on the floor for Defense and Rebound Issues and the CPU has no chance with this Stop-the-Clock-strategy. It's the worst strategy the CPU can choose ingame. I always start to laugh, when the CPU starts doing fouls, cause i dont loose the game anymore. You want Tim Duncan out of the game? Put your best freethrow shooter on the position PF and Tim Duncan does all the stop-the-clock fouls. On the other hand you are getting easy Points.

So if the game is getting close to the end, the CPU has no chance. EA has to figure out a better algorithm for games with crunch time. The CPU is acting like a dumb machine when the game is getting close.

I made a 1.7 seconds buzzer shot the other day to win the game by 1 point. So 1.7 seconds is enough :)

I agree, I once wanted to put up a last second shot to extend the lead further, but I can only inbound and before I can jump...the buzzer sounded.

In response to this:
About the not being able take late shots: i believe in the NBA the rule is .4 has to be left on the clock, and I have made buzzer beaters with this much time left in this game. Your execution has to be flawless, but it is doable. My bigger gripe is sometimes releasing long after the buzzer will still count (not as bad as last year but still on occasion) Also, it would depend on the player and their strength at a catch and shoot, his position to the basket etc. There are more factors to this in the game than just "hitting the button fast enough" If you think things through, you'll find yourself doing much better and you will eventually be able to hit that last second shot

About the computers stupid moves: 'it plays like a dumb machine' well my friend, IT IS A DUMB MACHINE. It usually doesnt have time for the "wait and let the bad shooter get the ball" technique....so it fouls the first person who gets it. Once again, my bigger gripe isnt the fouling here, but the inability for the offense to break the foul...if you shoot quick enough/hit pass immideately, it shouldnt be a foul...

My advice to you: check your difficulty level and your sliders...it can definitely make this the "real" you're looking for with a little effort. Out of the box, this game is flawed i'll agree but with a little tweaking and trial/error you can make it very good.

One thing I don't like about inbound plays in general, last year you could catch the ball on the move, this year the point guard stops to turn around, or jumps to catch the ball, taking more time off the clock. Although if you use direct pass to pass to a player running up court, they catch it on the run normally.

Have you noticed ?

When the home team take a time out within the last minute of the fourth quarter, the inbound play is weird.

Players seem to be coming from the other side of the court... and you can't make a regular strategy to pass the ball quickly and take a quick shot to win the game...

That's annoying....
Have you noticed that or am I the only one ?
